Predictions? (Not sure if this thread has been done yet?)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I wonder how many of the top 100 in 1970 are in the 2020 top 100.

James, Oliver, Michael ...

I'm obviously very old fashioned but a lot of the names seem awful

KirstenBlest · 18/10/2021 10:24

I love James and Michael, Oliver is nice but I don't like Olly

35andThriving · 18/10/2021 11:07

TataMamma
On this thread here there is a link to download the girls' name statistics. If you go into Table 6 of the data you should be able to find your dd's name (As long as it was registered at least 3 times).

Hope that helps.

thewhatsit · 18/10/2021 11:32

@TataMamma

They've released the top 100, but no info on the top 1000. I know my DD (born in 2020), would never be in the former, but I'd like to know her actual "ranking" lol. Can anyone help?
The excel sheets are there too.

Shock at Roman and Arabella, both up about 31 places each. I knew they were the fast rising ones to watch but that’s a huge increase.

The boys list starts fine for me but towards second half of the top 100 the names are just really, really not my cup of tea.

The girls list .. I don’t know. Individually I don’t mind a fair number of the names but when you see them all written down in a list, all together.. all so vowel heavy and frilly.

AliasGrape · 18/10/2021 12:03

I'm quite relieved, DDs name has stayed towards the bottom of the top 100. I didn't think I was that fussed about popularity, but after we gave her the name last year I suddenly started hearing it a lot more, and then there were some made up unofficial things on social media that seemed to imply it had shot up to top 10 or something.

Not that it matters really, we chose the name because we loved it and because it had a particular meaning for us, but it was bothering me for some reason Grin

I genuinely can't believe there are STILL so many Olivers and Olivias - I've not taught an Oliver for around 7 years and whilst there has been an Olivia in my class most years, never more than one and I don't know any personally.

bloominglovelyorange · 18/10/2021 12:11

Roman has exploded
Crikey. That name will date (not that it's necessarily a bad thing but still!)

IneedSocks · 18/10/2021 12:13

Archie & Violet

Classica · 18/10/2021 12:25

Olivia seems to have had that top spot for ages now. I don't see the appeal.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 18/10/2021 12:26

Im so glad it's not just me that was thinking similar. The last Olivia I taught was almost 5 years ago now and whilst I've come across a few Olives I've not met a tiny Olivia once whilst being on mat leave and attending groups. I've also only come across a handful of Oliver's in the past couple of years whilst teaching in multiple schools and nursery classes as a supply.

I am genuinely surprised to see it is still so popular and would be very interested to see a regional breakdown of where names were used as there must be areas practically drowning in baby Ollie's and Livi's.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/10/2021 12:31

But even the most popular names are only 4-5000 babies. Less than one percent each. So its that surprising that people never encounter them.

KirstenBlest · 18/10/2021 12:36

Roman strikes me as not a very pleasant name - like roman nose or roman road or something

The names seem to either be long or frilly or just a pile of vowels with a v, l, m or n.

DuneFan · 18/10/2021 12:37

I'm in the North East which is apparently an Oliver/Olivia hotspot and I don't know any of either under 18.

Funny too how many of the classic type boys names are kings- William, Henry, Edward (er, and Arthur). Yet other classics (Simon, Robert, Richard) have virtually disappeared.

I agree that the frilly hyphenated names will date; I do think girls names in general are harder to hit the "timeless classic" sweet spot with.

Until you enter the world of work.

It varies from company to company, but I've found myself working at places where half an office is made up of Davids, Marks, Steves and Ians

Igneo · 18/10/2021 12:39

Aw this just makes me sad.
I love my son and while I’m happy with his name, it wasn’t my choice and it’s rocketed into the top 5 in the last few years. This was my main reason for not wanting it.
I’m giving myself a slap round the face, because he’s still the only one in his school, and surely that’s good enough?
But i think i might not look at these bulletins in future as i think by making people like me sad about the popularity of their children’s names, they then fuel the kind of name divergence which others have alluded to already as ‘not my cup of tea’ etc.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 18/10/2021 12:41

Indeed but like a previous poster and myself have said over multiple years those 5000 odd children soon add up and therefore it's surprising when you don't come across any at all. Regional data would be very interesting.
CaffiSaliMali · 18/10/2021 12:41

Gosh Lyra's rise was larger than I anticipated (up 58 places).

Maeve also rose an impressive 124 places, and if you combine this with last year's rise it's jumped 413 places since 2018.

I like that British Baby Names also separates the top 100 into the Welsh top 100 and the English top 100. It lets me see which Welsh names are popular. Harri for boys (20) (depends how Welsh you consider Arthur (6) to be) and Mali for girls (20).

Crunchymum · 18/10/2021 12:49

Blimey - Maeve has climbed!

Classica · 18/10/2021 12:52

Is there a Roman in pop culture that accounts for its leap in popularity? I can think of Roman Kemp but that's about it.

Milo (+28) and Sonny (+22) have also had big jumps, which is funny because those are two names I would have thought had their peak about a decade ago.

brushlaptop · 18/10/2021 12:58

Does anyone have the link for the girls one?

Tigger85 · 18/10/2021 13:00

@Classica

The only character called Roman I know of in a TV series is Roman Roy in Succession, played by Kieran Caulkin. It's a great show but I don't know how popular it is.

KirstenBlest · 18/10/2021 13:02

@PinkWaferBiscuit, the ONS page does show regional data.

There's a map and it will give you the % for that region.

Somme names will be a lot more popular in some areas - for example, a welsh name like Efa or Jac might be more popular in Wales than in West Yorkshire, Ibrahim might be more popular in West Yorkshire than in Cornwall etc

finallychangedmyusername · 18/10/2021 13:06

So I scored myself on my predictions! Grin

I got these right!: 😁

  • Oliver still to remain at 1st, and George at 2nd
  • Noah to fall, but still be in top ten
  • Otis to rise from 124th
  • Vincent to rise from 136th
  • Nathaniel to rise from 137th
  • Logan to fall from 29th
  • Willow to rise slightly from 19th
  • Arabella to rise from 71st
  • Thea to rise from 46th
  • Chloe to fall from 39th
  • Margot to rise from 94th

Got these semi right!:

  • Teddy, Edward, Theo and Theodore all to rise - Edward dropped but all the others rose

But got quite a few wrong! 🙈

  • Alfie and Archie to fall out of top 20
  • Hugo to rise from 48th
  • Oakley to fall out of top 100 (at 98th in 2019 data)
  • Eli to rise from 107th
  • Dexter to rise from 114th
  • Bobby to rise from 68th and Robert from 115th
  • Harper to fall from 29th
  • Penelope to rise from 41st
  • Top 20 to remain with majority of names starting with a vowel - in fact 10/20 start with a vowel
  • Anna to rise from 82nd
  • Lara to rise from 97th
  • Beatrix to rise from 164th
  • Seren to rise from 196th
  • Phoebe to rise slightly from 22nd

*

The arrival in the top 100 of Delilah, Myla and Maeve surprised me. Surprised also to see Thea dropping by 11 places in a year, I feel like there's still loads of little Theas round here.

Ronnie rising is surprising to me, and Jayden still being top 100 (just, of course at joint 98th).

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/10/2021 13:06

Just did an Advanced Search on the baby names topic... Roman was mentioned a lot last year.

Dollywilde · 18/10/2021 13:10

So glad they’re out!

Was curious for DD’s name (born 2020), she’s one of 27 which is broadly similar to the previous year. Not surprised as I hadn’t heard of any others. A few of my NCT groups names have had a huge rise.
