Thoughts on name Ishbel?

Couldn’t find much threads on this name. We have Scottish heritage on my mums side. I am quite fond of “belle” names but think Isabel is too common.

Have never known an Ishbel only heard of the name. Be good to get some opinions on it!

I like it

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 20/09/2021 09:45

It's awful! Sounds like someone trying to say isobel whilst pissed
Sorry - it might sound nice in a highlands accent but otherwise no

ChessieFL · 20/09/2021 09:47

I like it, but everyone will think it’s Isabel spelt/pronounced wrongly.

There’s an Ishbel in the Trebizon boarding school books, known as Tish. That’s the only place I’ve come across this name!

Notajogger · 20/09/2021 09:49

I think people would assume it's a typo for Isabel

ManifestDestinee · 20/09/2021 09:49

She would face a lifetime of having to state her name 7 times and argue with people who get it wrong over and over again. Don't do it.

StrawberrySanta · 20/09/2021 09:52

Is it a girl's name? Im not keen I prefer Isabelle/Isobel. It reminds me of Ishmael

GoodnightGrandma · 20/09/2021 09:53

I agree that it sounds like a female version of Ishmael, so uneducated me would assume it’s a Jewish name.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/09/2021 09:54

Very Scottish. In the sense of makes sense within its cultural context, in Scotland.

Sean Connery has done you no favours with his widely-known pronunciation of 'S' as 'Sh' so that any Scottish name with 'sh' in it sounds as though it's actually an 'S' being pronounced in a 'Scottish' way. So Isbel. Or Isobel (Scottish spelling), gliding over the middle syllable.

Or indeed, it sounds like the speaker is pished.

I actually like it but you asked for feedback on perceptions.

Palavah · 20/09/2021 09:57

I like it (possibly because of the Trebizon connection).

Alonelonelyloner · 20/09/2021 09:58

If you are Scottish or live in Scotland then it's gorgeous. If you are somewhere else be prepared for some of the silliness you can see in PPs.

It's a beautiful name IMO.

TheUndoingProject · 20/09/2021 10:04

I think it’s a lovely name (but I am Scottish, which is clearly a factor)

aliloandabanana · 20/09/2021 10:05

Call me Ishbel...

Ca55andraMortmain · 20/09/2021 10:13

I'm in Scotland and I know a few, although I wouldn't say it's a hugely common/popular name here. I think it's pretty and it wouldn't raise any eyebrows in Scotland but judging by some of the posts here I'd maybe avoid it if you're somewhere where people aren't used to hearing names that aren't English. If you're somewhere even mildly multicultural I'd think you'd be fine though!

applesandpears33 · 20/09/2021 10:15

I'm in Scotland and love it. DH vetoed it though for our DD.

weebarra · 20/09/2021 10:19

I like it but am Scottish and don't see it as unusual. I've met a few.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/09/2021 10:32

I don't think it's about acceptance of multicultural names. It's about likely confusion with another, very, very popular name.

SoupDragon · 20/09/2021 10:39

I like it. I don't actually think it will be confused too much with Isabel - it has less syllables in it for a start. Many names can be confused with others 🤷🏻‍♀️

HoldingTheDoor · 20/09/2021 10:57

I'm Scottish and think it sounds awful. Like you're drunk and trying to say Isobel.

Lol! I can't get this out my head now. Sorry OP. Does sound rather phlegmy.
urbanbuddha · 20/09/2021 11:08

I like it. Don't think it would be a problem outside Scotland - there are loads of names that aren't English in England.

Drybird2020 · 20/09/2021 11:09

I'm Scottish so it's familiar to me. I love it!
