We are due a boy in a few weeks. Some of these names I have given as an example are lovely and don't want to offend anyone who has chosen them but we are hoping to find the sweet spot name which

A) isn't too popular or trending (so might date eg Arlo, Ezra, Arthur, Otto, Ted, Jude)
B) isn't a "newer name" like American type surname Jackson, Harrison, Cole (we do like Logan though)
C) is traditional but not v exciting (Oliver, George, Charles/Charlie, Jack)
D) is cute but will also suit them as an adult
[E) also not a friend/family member name]

Not asking for much 😂😂
Ideas so far: Douglas, Oscar, Jesse, Orson, Percy

Overall I guess whatever the name, trending or not if you love it go for it??

Douglas is one of my favourite names at he moment. Dougie is a cute nickname for a child or adult.

Amdone123 · 08/09/2021 12:33

I love Jesse out of your list. Not keen on the others.
Jesse is great for all life stages !

LouLion · 08/09/2021 12:55

Miles and Fraser were top of my list, but we have girls. Miles could have the nn Milo when little.

leavesthataregreen · 08/09/2021 13:34

I think lots of names on your 'might date' list are classics but some of your sweet spot names will date. Ezra, Arthur, Otto, Ted and Jude are all classics imo.

Of your list, I like Jesse and Douglas. Oscar is fine. Less keen on Percy (that does feel like a try-hard-will-date name) and don't like Orson much because I only associate it with Orson Wells who wasn't a charmer.

mrsrobin · 08/09/2021 13:37

Jesse is a great name :)

adrianmolesmole · 08/09/2021 14:34

I like Jesse too. It's very cute for a boy or a man!

Hate Douglas and Percy.

Blubells · 08/09/2021 14:37

I like Orson. And Quentin.

Jesse sounds like Jessie/Jessica.

Delphigirl · 08/09/2021 15:06

Miles
Gilbert (Gil for short - cool, traditional, unusual)

Andrew (Drew for short - trad but nobody is using it at the moment)
John / Johnny also not being used much but timeless and classless

I think there are going to be a lot of Jesse's about soon. I know a baby called Jesse.

I am pregnant with boy 2 and we are going with Cameron. Cammie for short

BikeRunSki · 08/09/2021 15:12

Patrick
Dominic
Julian
Nicholas
Jonathan
Laurence

Delphigirl · 08/09/2021 15:13

If I heard Cammie I would assume it was a girl (Camille pronounced the same). But I don’t mind Cam.

Delphigirl · 08/09/2021 15:14

@bikerunski your list reads like a list of 55yo barristers! Maybe OP should google lists of chambers. But I agree they are nice names Grin

Jasmine11 · 08/09/2021 15:25

Rowan, Felix, Dylan, Silas, Jasper?

GroggyLegs · 08/09/2021 15:32

Jesse is lovely, but yes I know one too - I predict a comeback.

I'd say Orson is one of the American names you wanted to avoid. and it's horrible sorry

Henry?
Leo?
Elliot?
I do like Drew as suggested by PP.

bloominglovelyorange · 08/09/2021 15:52

Names like Felix and Rowan/Roman and Hunter are really trendy and will date badly.

Tristan
Laurence
Eric
Ellis

SundayTwizzle · 08/09/2021 16:09

I love Dominic I don't understand why it's not more popular.

Also...
Christopher (nn Kit)
James (nn Jamie)
Nathaniel (nn Nate)
Ezequiel (nn Zeke)
Woodrow (nn Woody)
Mcauley (nn Mac or Max)
Miles (nn Milo)

Esspee · 08/09/2021 16:15

Jessie in my neck of the woods means effeminate. No way would I saddle a child with a name like that.

Nofaffing · 08/09/2021 16:18

Seth
Stirling
Eli
Wilfred
Elliot
Walter
Isaac

WhoppingBigBackside · 08/09/2021 16:46

Douglas - fine
Oscar - check the ONS data for it, I think it became very popular in the 2000s, so likely to date.,
Jesse - you big Jessie. No
Orson - too similar to Arson
Percy - would be nice for a cat
