We are due a boy in a few weeks. Some of these names I have given as an example are lovely and don't want to offend anyone who has chosen them but we are hoping to find the sweet spot name which

A) isn't too popular or trending (so might date eg Arlo, Ezra, Arthur, Otto, Ted, Jude)
B) isn't a "newer name" like American type surname Jackson, Harrison, Cole (we do like Logan though)
C) is traditional but not v exciting (Oliver, George, Charles/Charlie, Jack)
D) is cute but will also suit them as an adult
[E) also not a friend/family member name]

Not asking for much 😂😂
Ideas so far: Douglas, Oscar, Jesse, Orson, Percy

Overall I guess whatever the name, trending or not if you love it go for it??

I love the name Peter (Pete for short) and also Matthew. Both classics, but not so common now.

Bimblybomeyelash · 08/09/2021 16:56

Douglas, Oscar, Jesse, Orson

These make me think of:

Duncan, Angus, Rory, Isaac, Sonny, Mason

Percy is so bad to my ears and makes me think of Cyril, Dennis, Norris

I would classify Jesse as up and coming popular, we know a few. I like Oscar from your list. In our area (South East London) there are so many unusual names that our children who have more traditional names (like your C list) are in the minority and their names aren't duplicated in their school years. I remember being in a baby group and a lady was proudly saying that her daughter's name was so unusual there were not any other kids called that in the country. Then another lady walked in and her child was called the same thing.

@Delphigirl
In that case I’ll add Michael, Simeon, Phillip and Lancelot
MN Chambers

Surely “55 year olds barrister” is actually the traditional/not too popular/not too new vibe the OP wants?

Twinkie01 · 08/09/2021 17:47

Gabriel, Mac or Theo?

Twinkie01 · 08/09/2021 17:47

Max!!

Love Percy.

Twinkie01 · 08/09/2021 17:47

Ooohh Elliot (one of my kids!)

poodlepip · 08/09/2021 17:51

😂 maybe future barrister haha!
Yeah interesting point Jesse much more popular and Orson is a bit trendy.

Is Logan a bit in that category too?

I like Peter, Hugo, Patrick and the Scottish options. Maybe a bit posh, but surname isn't posh at all and we aren't so might be ok!

Yes yes @bikerunski I’m not criticising - I think that is exactly the vibe she wants! I’m full of admiration - you’ve cracked it! Grin

You're trying to find the perfect name. The perfect name doesn't exist.

Choose a name you love and it will be perfect because it will be your son's.

PS I really like Arthur's and I don't think it's trendy. I know 45 and 20 year old Arthurs, as well as young children.

Zazazaz · 08/09/2021 18:46

Felix.
Jasper.

RJnomore1 · 08/09/2021 18:49

Orson and Percy are pigs. Please don’t call a child Percy just now.

Patrick is nice and offers lots of nicknames.

Drybird2020 · 08/09/2021 18:57

Not fond of Jesse or Percy - they seem a bit inspid.

How about Benedict, Solomon (Solly) or Thaddeus (Teddy)

HalfSiblingsMadeContact · 08/09/2021 20:09

For some reason Peregrine popped into my head (shortened Perry?)

Good luck finding just the right name, I well remember that feeling even though mine are nearly grown now.
