We are due a boy in a few weeks. Some of these names I have given as an example are lovely and don't want to offend anyone who has chosen them but we are hoping to find the sweet spot name which

A) isn't too popular or trending (so might date eg Arlo, Ezra, Arthur, Otto, Ted, Jude)
B) isn't a "newer name" like American type surname Jackson, Harrison, Cole (we do like Logan though)
C) is traditional but not v exciting (Oliver, George, Charles/Charlie, Jack)
D) is cute but will also suit them as an adult
[E) also not a friend/family member name]

Not asking for much 😂😂
Ideas so far: Douglas, Oscar, Jesse, Orson, Percy

Overall I guess whatever the name, trending or not if you love it go for it??

Aw I love some of these suggestions. So true about Percy pigs. Maybe a name for our next pet then.

Logan was my granny's surname so I do like that, my Dad is scottish so v happy for those names although would feel an imposter with a Seamus or Hamish 🙂

@Esspee

Jessie in my neck of the woods means effeminate. No way would I saddle a child with a name like that.
That's exactly what I was thinking "ya big Jessie".

Logan is very “common” ( as it literal way - everywhere) where I live. Same with Connor, Arlo, Elliot, Thomas, Samuel, James, Charlie and Harry/Harrison

I really like Lemuel, Sidney, Arthur, Constantine, Benjamin, Claude and Christopher

Male barristers I know include:

Adam, Alastair, Alexander, Andreas, Andrew, Anthony, Benedict, Benjamin, Charles, Christian, Christopher, Clive, Daniel, David, Donald, Douglas, Edmund, Edward, George, Giles, Henry, Hugh, James, John, Jonathan, Joseph, Karl, Luke, Malcolm, Mark, Michael, Nicholas, Paul, Peter, Robert, Robin, Richard, Rupert, Samuel, Sebastian, Simon, Stephen, Thomas, Timothy.

I don’t know any barristers called Magnus, but it might fit the bill?

HonorHiding · 09/09/2021 02:49

Or something like Orlando, Jasper, Bruno?

We have a Jesse and I absolutely love it! Have had so many people say they love his name. I feel like the ‘you big Jessie’ saying is a bit behind the times now and doesn’t bother me in the slightest. As a PP said, don’t try too hard looking for the perfect name as it doesn’t exist. Just go with something that you really like and as it’s your child’s name you will love it. Also don’t worry too much about other peoples opinions as no matter what name you choose there will always be someone out there that doesn’t like it. As long as you do that’s all that matters ☺️

As an primary school teacher I wouldn’t choose Jesse. We have loads of them! Both boys spelt Jesse and girls spelt Jessie. They are known as Jesse T, Jessie B or just boy Jesse and girl jessie to clarify which is which as we have several in each class and when referring to them verbally you don’t know which is which or how it’s spelt.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 09/09/2021 13:08

If some of your family are Scottish, I’d avoid Jesse, as the negative connotations are much stronger up there. My Scottish mum couldn’t believe when my friend named her son Jesse.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 09/09/2021 13:10

Saying 'you big jessie' is not behind the times in Scotland!

Hey guys. Our baby is a week old now and he is called Sebastian - Seb. He's a cutie and suits his name which we chose in recovery from the CS.

Thanks for your suggestions. This was one a few people came up with

Congratulations OP. Sebastian is a lovely name Flowers

Rockmehardplace · 14/10/2021 15:26

Jesse would never work in Scotland (“ya big Jessie” etc)
Percy is dire unless he is heading straight to Eton from the maternity unit.

The rest of your names are fine. My fave is probably Douglas. What about

Aidan
Ruaridh
Xavier (Xav for short)
Struan

Rockmehardplace · 14/10/2021 15:27

Just seen your update - Sebastian is a fabulous name!!! Congratulations!

Oops. Seen you’ve got a Sebastian. Congrats!

LavenderYellow · 14/10/2021 15:37

Huge congratulations and I love the name. We have a Sebastian known as Bas in our family.
