Nessie is the nickname for the Loch Ness Monster, isn’t it?

torchh · 26/08/2021 16:48

Also short for Agnes

I usually like old fashioned names but I don't like that one.
It's harsh sounding for some reason.

I wouldn't want to be Agnes or Nessie. I was at school with an Agnes but she changed her name to Senga (Agnes backwards).

MadMadMadamMim · 26/08/2021 16:53

Dreadful.

Agnes is really old fashioned in Scotland anyway - and only the Loch Ness Monster is really referred to as "Nessie".

Aggie would be the more common nickname and it's really ugly.

TeenMinusTests · 26/08/2021 16:53

I know a lovely teenage Agnes.

Nessie I think of as being short for Vanessa.

Senga sounds dreadful!

I love the name agnes

PaolaDiLorenzo · 26/08/2021 17:06

I had an elderly relation called Agnes. She absolutely hated her name, especially if it was shortened to Aggie.
She stopped using it and went by her much nicer middle name.
It's very harsh sounding .

Yes suppose you're right.

I'm literally completely stuck on girls' names

Agnes? Sweet Mother of all that is holy! It's one of the ugliest names ever.

torchh · 26/08/2021 17:13

Worse than Chardonnay?

Love it. But my dd's name got about 150 hateful comments here so I wouldn't trust my opinion Grin

daisypond · 26/08/2021 17:43

I like it a lot. Traditional, strong, not twee or girlie, not common these days. I like Nessie or Ness as a short form. It works.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/08/2021 17:47

Nessie/Nessa/Ness is usually for Vanessa (a lovely name in itself).

Agnes (or Aggie/Ag) never sounds great in the English pronunciation. It's prettier in French, but probably poncey to choose that if you're English.

DanglingMod · 26/08/2021 17:47

I love it. Ness for short, not Nessie.

I also slightly prefer Agatha. Love hard sounding names with Gs or Ts in, like Margot, Greta, Petra or Netta/Nettie.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/08/2021 17:49

Worse than Chardonnay?

In fairness, Chardonnay is not an ugly name. Tacky, but not ugly.

yourestandingonmyneck · 26/08/2021 17:51

I'm not keen on Agnes, it is very harsh (although I do generally quite like strong names of that ilk).

Nancy is a nickname of Agnes, which is better than Nessie.

How about Nellie, short for Helen. I adore both.

RuthW · 26/08/2021 17:58

I like it

I don't mind Agnes. It does kind of sound like an old lady and the meaning is a bit off putting but it's still beautiful. I think it is for a comeback! Not a fan of Nessie as a nickname though.

Knittedfairies · 26/08/2021 18:04

I read somewhere that the medieval pronunciation of Agnes was Annis - a much nicer name.
