Induction tmrw and we have gone off our main girls name. I've always liked Emma, mainly bc dearest oldest friend is an Emma and she's lovely.

Immediate thoughts? Done or due a revival?

We have a Thomas and Tessa, both known by their short versions.

It's usually bobbing around the 50-60 mark in top 100 names of year lists.

1500 born in 2014 compared to nearly 6000 amelias. My daughter is a 2014 born Emma Grin

It's not unusual. It's not hard to spell. Chances are her first word will be mummy not daddy because of the repetition of the mm sound. Likely to bethe only Emma in her class. No silly nicknames apart from Emma dilemma.

What's not to like?

There is a MN thread from a few years back where it got panned as boring Hmm

dementedpixie · 17/07/2021 16:53

My dd is an Emma born in 2003

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 17/07/2021 16:54

Sorry, don’t like Emma, never met a nice one either!

Theoldwoman · 17/07/2021 16:54

Not a fan but love Emily.

What about Ella?

Hm2020 · 17/07/2021 16:56

@WowIlikereallyhateyou came to say exactly the same

Undersnatch · 17/07/2021 16:56

I don’t think it ever went away to be revived, it’s one of these names that’s always been popular. I know several young Emmas as well as some older ones. It’s probably kind of in my ‘boring’ box because of that, I wouldn’t use it, but I think it’s classic and has a lovely sound, so I don’t dislike it.

mondaywine · 17/07/2021 16:56

Mine is particularly fantastic 😜

Sparring · 17/07/2021 16:57

Emma is a great name. I know a few very lovely Emmas.

Cucumberinginplease · 17/07/2021 17:02

I like it! Like Emily too although not sure how well it translates to adult in comparison.

Maverick66 · 17/07/2021 17:03

My daughter is Emma.
She is lovely,kind and caring.
There were no Emma's in her class at school.

Chilldonaldchill · 17/07/2021 17:04

I like it. I don't think it ever went away but is a bit less popular than Emily.

Mommabear20 · 17/07/2021 17:04

I'd wait till she is born and see how you feel.
We had 2 choices for our DD, a favourite and a back up (twins run in my family), I started going off our first choice a few days before she arrived but the minute she was born I couldn't have imagined calling her anything else!

Boredwaiting · 17/07/2021 17:06

Love it

Pretty but not cutesy

Elegant

Pleasant sounding

I know a very intelligent, friendly, lovely Emma and I also like Jane Austen.

supadupapupascupa · 17/07/2021 17:07

Was a toss up between Emma and the name we went with in the end (DH got the decider). I have a Thomas too :-)

RickOShay · 17/07/2021 17:08

I really like Emma. I do know a very lovely one.

NemosPoorlyFinn · 17/07/2021 17:13

I'm an Emma
I found the name to be very popular around the late 80 early 90s
But not so much now

I also think someone's name doesn't have an effect on if they are a nice/horrible person

Katefoster · 17/07/2021 17:28

I love the name Emma

Daisy829 · 17/07/2021 17:35

I love it. I wanted to use Emma but DH preferred Emily so that’s what we went with. Both lovely names

harverina · 17/07/2021 17:40

I love the name but we couldn’t use it due to a close family connection. I think it’s a name that won’t date over time. And although it’s not uncommon, it’s also not a name that is overly used either. I don’t think there are any Emma’s in my dd’s school at the moment (small school and dd1 can’t think of any).

Emily is also nice and will also age well too.

Uramaki · 17/07/2021 17:41

I love Emma

Schrutesbeets · 17/07/2021 17:41

I really like it but wouldn't name my child after a friend

girljulian · 17/07/2021 17:44

Emma is my first name. I have no feelings about the name itself but I decided when I was six that I wanted to use my middle name because there were so many Emmas in my class. I do think it’s common and boring but my real complaint with it was always being one of several. If it’s no longer that common, no reason not to use it.

Wowwellokthen · 17/07/2021 17:46

I have a 2007 born Emma. NN Em or Ems

35andThriving · 17/07/2021 17:55

Emma is a classy name.

OneFootintheRave · 17/07/2021 17:56

Emma is a lovely, elegant name.
