Induction tmrw and we have gone off our main girls name. I've always liked Emma, mainly bc dearest oldest friend is an Emma and she's lovely.

Immediate thoughts? Done or due a revival?

We have a Thomas and Tessa, both known by their short versions.

I think its lovely

35andThriving · 17/07/2021 17:59

I wouldn't want to name a child after a friend though. The person I thought of as my greatest friend, completely changed when I had ds, and I have not even spoken to them in 7 years now. I honestly didn't see that coming.

Splendo · 17/07/2021 18:14

I think it's lovely.
It's classic, will never be spelled or pronounced incorrectly.
It's not incredibly popular so there won't be several in a class but it's still used commonly enough that it hasn't become dated.
It goes well with almost any surname.
It doesn't lend itself to any unpleasant nicknames.
It suits any age from a baby to a little girl to a teenager to a young woman to an old lady.
Can't think of anything bad to say about it!

Gemma?

Legoninjago1 · 17/07/2021 18:26

Emma is gorgeous.

Legoninjago1 · 17/07/2021 18:27

And I've never met a child Emma (since I've been an adult!)

Sexnotgender · 17/07/2021 18:28

It’s lovely. I know a toddler Emma.

Elune · 17/07/2021 18:38

My toddler DD is an Emma. I love it (obviously). It's one of those classic, not massively over-popular names that always sounds good IMO.

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2021 19:57

If I'd had a girl she'd have been Emma. I had three boys so didn't get to use it. It's the perfect name to me, I just love it.

As I've said before on threads about this name, I love that it has such a long history, it's been in constant use in England since the Middle Ages which is amazing when you think about it. A true timeless classic, and definitely not boring.

SirenSays · 17/07/2021 20:01

I don't like it, it sounds more like baby babble than an actual name imo and I think it's very dated. But maybe I'm biased as I've never met a nice one 😂

Lanique · 17/07/2021 20:02

Emma is a lovely name - simple and classic, pretty but not twee. I know some lovely Emmas.

Chunkymenrock · 17/07/2021 20:04

Really, really boring and dull name.

jennymac31 · 17/07/2021 20:04

My Emma was born in 2013, named after my mother (whose name is Emmaline but DH wanted our daughter to just be Emma). I prefer it to Emily, which is much more popular and it's nice knowing that it's unlikely that there will be another Emma in her year.

SpongeBarb · 17/07/2021 20:06

Yes, love Emma.

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/07/2021 20:07

Emma is a lovely name. Very classic. I have never met a horrible Emma.

HumphreysCorner · 17/07/2021 20:08

My DD1 is a 2003 Emma, 18 on Monday x

blahblahblah321 · 17/07/2021 20:08

As an early 80's baby, I went to school with a million Emma's ( ok slight exaggeration)

I love it, very classic and think to suits all age groups

newtolineofduty · 17/07/2021 20:10

It's nice but I think it rhymes abit too much with tessa. What was your original name? Xx

AnnaSW1 · 17/07/2021 20:14

Love Emma

irresistibleoverwhelm · 17/07/2021 20:16

I like Emma -- it's classic, pretty and unremarkable in the best way: by that I mean that it isn't dated or too fashionable, it isn't associated with a specific person or a specific social class, it's easily pronounced and spelt and has been around a long time.

My own name is similar (think Anna, Hannah, type thing) -- and though I thought it boring as a child in the 80s (when I was desperate to be called Joanne or Jenna or Samantha!), now I am hugely grateful my parents chose a very classic, classless name which doesn't pigeonhole me but is still pretty and simple.

Emmas can go anywhere - plumber or baroness - and it goes back a long way, as a pp said. I like it!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 17/07/2021 20:18

I like Emma.

PocahontasMcGinty · 17/07/2021 20:25

The best name. It's classic. Always used so not prone to naming fads. But not overly used at the moment, so not ever 2nd kid is called Emma.

Emily is more popular but nowhere near as nice in my opinion

I have never met a horrible Emma.

cherryberrylicious · 17/07/2021 20:26

Emma is a gorgeous, timeless name. Only ever met lovely Emma's

Garfunkle · 17/07/2021 20:28

There’s nothing wrong with Emma. It’s timeless, pretty much like Charlotte, Emily, Lucy.

I much prefer Emma to Ella - or even worse Ellie or Amelia 😬

SugarbabyMilly · 17/07/2021 21:01

I never used to like it but it's grown on me. It's more popular in the US than it is here.
