Murdo and Torin

Hi everyone, I’m currently pregnant and struggling a bit with boys’ names this time.

What does everyone think of Murdo and Torin?

I was surprised when my family all really liked Murdo! We’re Scottish and the surname will be a Scottish one, if that matters. I’m not sure how well it ‘goes’ with DS’s name though, which is a very soft name with mainly vowel sounds (not Scottish), or if I even care whether they go in the first place. Is it too Scottish though?! We don’t live in Scotland atm.

I read that Torin is Irish and have added it to The List.

Thanks

Murdo is so.....murdery

Torin is nice, as it thorin.

BillyShears · 11/07/2021 20:35

They both sound kind of Italian. Are they? I’m not sure about them as names.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2021 20:36

Torin is very nice.

Murdo...isn't. Sorry.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 11/07/2021 20:36

Don't do it. They are not nice sounding names.

othersideofthefence · 11/07/2021 20:37

No offence meant OP but they sound a bit like Hobbit names

campion · 11/07/2021 20:38

Murdo.

I used to know someone called Murdo McLeod (Scottish!) and I thought it was a great name.

FartnissEverbeans · 11/07/2021 20:38

@Peppallama The ‘murder’ thing is why I’m surprised so many people like it, both in real life and on past threads here! And it puts me off a bit because my husband and I are both very Scottish sounding and, as we live overseas, people get very excited whenever we say the word ‘murder’ because of our accent. That’s why I’m worried it might be too Scottish!

@BillyShears No, they’re not Italian. One is Scottish and one is Irish. I said that in my post

I like Torin and also Tobin, but Murdo is so awful. Don't do it 😵

FartnissEverbeans · 11/07/2021 20:39

@othersideofthefence Haha! This is the sort of thing my brother would say. I see what you mean

Not a fan of Murdo, what about Munro?

Torin is ok, not blown away by it.

FartnissEverbeans · 11/07/2021 20:40

@PearlNextDoor I couldn’t use Tobin, it just reminds me of that serial killer unfortunately. It happened in my city

@FartnissEverbeans apologies- read it with one eye on the football!

tilder · 11/07/2021 20:41

I thought Scottish.

Also McMurdo Sound, which is not a bad connection. Although it's probably not what most would associate with it!

I like Torin. Why is this Scottish? Is it a placd of does it have a meaning?

FartnissEverbeans · 11/07/2021 20:42

@tilder It’s Irish apparently. Comes from the word for ‘chief’

Oh right, not familiar with that but i hear you.

I had to take Raoul off the list.

FartnissEverbeans · 11/07/2021 20:45

@PearlNextDoor Raoul is a great name, that’s a shame! Hope you found something equally good

I like Torin.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/07/2021 20:45

Torin is great, as is Torbien. Murdo is awful

ArsendLupin · 11/07/2021 20:47

I know a little Murdo and I like it but it's a bit murdery.

Love Torin and Thorin, and there's one at DS nursery.

tilder · 11/07/2021 20:47

Apologies, you said in your OP.

I like it. I would be confident that I would probably pronounce it correctly but I would probably have to ask how to spell it. Names that have uncertain or variable ways of being pronounced can be tricky.

MondayYogurt · 11/07/2021 20:50

Grew up with a Torin, shortened to Tor which is also strong.
Murdo does work in Scotland, tough selling it elsewhere. Murdoch? Means sea.

ProperVexed · 11/07/2021 20:50

Murdo is truly fabulous!

FartnissEverbeans · 11/07/2021 20:55

@MondayYogurt I’m worried it might be a tough sell… Murdoch just makes me think of Rupert unfortunately!

Never mind Raoul Moat. That Irn Bru advert ruined that name for me forever.

Look at Raoul bouncing up and down…

Standrewsschool · 11/07/2021 20:59

Lovely names.
