I think it's a sweet name but also think it's a bit cringe and rude to use a private nickname as a public tribute, certainly while that person is still alive. And particularly considering their comments about his family over the past year.

It feels like a superficial gesture to try and show solidarity with the family despite continuing to speak poorly about them.

dottiedodah · 07/06/2021 10:09

I am pleased for them that they have a new baby girl .However the name just sounds like they are trying a bit too hard after their "interview" and recent tactless remarks,trying to curry favour with the Queen .

Bibidy · 07/06/2021 10:13

@MrsElijahMikaelson1

I don’t love it, but that’s ok as it’s not my baby. If they have done it to build bridges then I actually think that’s great.
I feel the opposite tbh...I can't imagine members of my family doing what Harry and Meghan have done this year and then thinking that naming their child after me was a tribute.

It seems like a very hollow gesture given the way they have spoken about the royal family and accusations they have made about how uncaring everyone is etc etc.

SpindleWhorl · 07/06/2021 10:25

Maybe they're trolling the Queen.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 07/06/2021 10:27

What girls' name would not be quite a departure from Archie? Archiella? Archiette?

No. You’re missing my point. Sophie, Amelia, Isla, Olivia, one of the Top 10 type names would be what I see as the girls’ name equivalent to Archie.

SallySycamore · 07/06/2021 10:44

To me, it doesn't really feel like she has her own name. I know the Royals tend to use the same pool of names, but I don't think there's usually quite such a strong association with another person for all of the names.

I think I'd have just used Lili for her first name. People would still make the connection, but she would have a name that was her own.

MoChridhe · 07/06/2021 11:00

@AvocadoPlant

Given Meghan makes so much of her feminist credentials then why not honour the strong women that are actually in her in her life - Oprah and Doria.
The Queen is the strongest woman in her life. So she used her name.
MoChridhe · 07/06/2021 11:03

@Egghead68

I think Meghan’s mother might feel left out. They could have added her name too.
Do you think Kate Middleton's dad feels left out of his grandson's names? Does it matter. None of my kids are named after me or DH's parents and they still love them unconditionally.
Violetlavenders · 07/06/2021 11:47

But both Lilibet and Diana are from Harry's family. It would have been nice to have had one name from each parent's family.

CokeDrinker · 07/06/2021 12:27

@Nomorepies

I think considering the appalling way they have criticised the Queen and everything her life has been about, its a blatant attempt to maintain that money-making connection whilst sticking the knife in the back.

I just find them both gross. She's an attention seeking narc and he's too stupid to see what she has planned for them.

@Nomorepies Considering we barely hear a peep from her and Harry is doing all the talking, your misogyny is gross and appalling.
CokeDrinker · 07/06/2021 12:36

Ignorant and vicious as well as sexist comments on here are exactly why they fled the UK. Many internalised misogynists on this thread won't be happy until she (or he) goes the way of Caroline Flack. You people should be absolutely and thoroughly disgusted and ashamed of yourself, but you'd have to have self awareness, a heart and a soul for that.

Doria's aunt is called Lillie. Happy now Hmm
Marmaladeagain · 07/06/2021 12:52

poor thing, don't be so hard on yourself.

You still believe they "fled"... they left because they can't have half-in half-out. They want back in, they want to be on the balcony and Jubilee etc etc

The whole saga is Harry trying to get RF to bend to his will, except in the process turned most of the UK public against him (not to mention what people in the forces are saying about him).

Hear Hear Spot on Well said
Ocsetldil · 07/06/2021 12:58

@Highfivemum. Your facts are entirely incorrect. Princess Elizabeth was called Lilibet long before she met Philip of Greece.

PresentingPercy · 07/06/2021 13:00

Posters are allowed opinions. We don’t all agree. Or even have to agree. If we don’t like a name it’s reasonable to be allowed to say that and why. We do not have to be told what to think and he told off by woke people.

Highfivemum · 07/06/2021 13:02

The Queen was called Lilibet as from what we read she count say her name properly. It still doesn’t alter the fact it was carried on by her husband who only recently died. They should be more respectful.

MoChridhe · 07/06/2021 13:07

I think some posters are just disappointed that they can't actually criticise the name Lilibet in itself cos it is the Queen's name and would by extension be rude to the Queen. Well played Harry. Now all they have left to pick on is how disrespectful...

Roselilly36 · 07/06/2021 13:11

Congrats to them. I wouldn’t dream of commenting on their choice of name or anyone else’s, as it’s none of my business.

I don't like it, Lily Diana is much nicer.

greennailvarnish · 07/06/2021 13:20

Oh my! I gave my two DDs middle names after their grandmas and great grandmas who have died a long time ago. Their first names do not even 'go' with their middle names but you know what, I wanted to honour their female relatives and their name goes on in my daughters.
I was not even close to one of my grandmothers who lived in a different country all my life. Unlike Harry.
How can anyone here presuppose the relationship that Harry has with his grandmother?
Lilibet Diana - gorgeous names.

Hallyup6 · 07/06/2021 13:25

Lilibet sounds quite harsh to me, like it needs an h on the end of it, and shortening it to Lili looks incredibly lower class. Diana is predictable and dated. I can't say I like it.

Lily would have been fine.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 07/06/2021 13:29

Totally agree @Nomorepies

They can’t have it both ways. Why would they give her names so intertwined with the royals if they are rejecting that way of life?

ipredictariot5 · 07/06/2021 13:35

A new baby is joyous news and jt is lovely to think that Harry can have the happy family life he feels he missed out on himself
They could have just gone with Lili and given the nod that it was a tribute to the Queens informal nickname privately to the family
But in the context of the (ongoing) hammering they are giving the Royal Family in the press jt just feels they are out of touch and now trading on their connections with the RF with further media attention
It’s almost like they think they can criticise Charles/ William publicly and the Queen will not be hurt by that and yet they can use her family pet name
I hope they have done all the damage they can now and will move on with their lives without sensationalist interviews / programmes to keep their profile up
Britain and the RF have a lot of reflecting and change to do with the history of colonialism
and I hope that is moving along. So I have sympathy with the racial issues raised by them. Similarly mental health has been championed by Harry and William over recent years to the good. But the continual process of upping their own public profile due to the interviews and now this name needs to stop IMO
