Very clever and manipulative choice

kezziethecat · 06/06/2021 22:30

Not a fan to be honest although Lily is lovely. I just don't like the look of the spelling Lili. Very happy for them though.

CokeDrinker · 06/06/2021 22:44

@HopeValley

I think Elizabeth Diana would have been much nicer with Lilibet as a nickname. It's a nice diminutive but not a name in its own right.
@HopeValley That's not true at all. I know two Lillibets, one in her 50s, the other 62, neither named after the Queen (yep I asked) and neither live in the UK. Apparently it's also a common name in the US as well as here in Australia. So it is an actual real proper first name.
midsomermurderess · 06/06/2021 22:51

Lilienthal= lily valley, I think. Also a German watch.

antsy · 06/06/2021 22:56

How many people in the U.S have the name Lilibet: 141

@WallaceinAnderland

I like it. Although DH said it sounds like a tampon so now I'm not so sure.
yeah there is tampon brand as that.
Ihavepixies · 06/06/2021 22:58

It sounds very american celebrity babyname as does Lili which is a 'cre8tive' spelling of classic Lily, it seems like Megan was trying to fit in with her hollywood crowd whilst trying to make a strong link with the queen and imo overreached. Why not just use Elizabeth and call her Lilibet as a petname or Lily for short? That would be more aristocratic and traditional. Perhaps it is Elizabeth on the birth certificate.

Lilibet, circus child (original title: Lilibet, cirkusbarn) is the title of a book by the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren, with photos by Anna Riwkin-Brick

This child is not the first child to be called lilibet. The name is not unique to the Queen.

dorangme · 06/06/2021 23:01

Such CF to take and use the queen's affectionately remembered childhood nickname to imbue their children with an aura of royalty for later monetization.

Who's going to forget the royal connection?

ihatebindweed · 06/06/2021 23:06

Meh I don't like it, Lily is fine.
Two kids with ie names is a bit samey. I don't get them saying her name is Lili is it or Lilibet? Anyway big congratulations to them, I'm sure they don't like my DC's names either 🤣

DateLoaf · 06/06/2021 23:08

Shame they didn’t go for Meghandaught as a middle name, like they did for Archie Harrison Smile

dorangme · 06/06/2021 23:08

I don't mind the name at all but I find the whole situation a bit of a head fuck. Harry talks about his Dad's failings as a parent and attributes them to his upbringing by his Mum, the Queen.

Didnt Charles do the same about PP? And then give include the name Philip in Williams name?

Marmaladeagain · 06/06/2021 23:09

"This child is not the first child to be called lilibet. The name is not unique to the Queen."

Have you not seen the statement H&M put out? They say they've chosen it because it is the family nickname for the Queen.

The fact that some other people have also independently of the RF used a nickname as a given name is irrelevant as H&M have clearly stated today it is to "honor" the Queen and using her family nickname.

I can't fathom why the same posters keep saying "it's a real name", someone in M's family called Lillie etc it's irrelevant when the statement today from H&M is they are using the name purely as an "honor" to the Queen. Appropriating intimacy - from the grandson who couldn't stay for the Queen's birthday.

Must confuse some of their fans what with them believing the Queen and the RF to be racist etc that they'd want to honour her.

H&M need to be associated with the institution they disparage - it's a tightrope walk and they've fallen off, but they just don't want to believe it yet.

tornadosequins · 06/06/2021 23:10

Funny, I don't remember all this concern about Prince William naming his daughter after his mum. It's hardly that unusual for people who lost their mum before reaching adulthood to give their daughters her name in some way.

I think it's a lovely name that is meaningful to their family.

I don't get all the snobbishness about "traditional" names over familiar or new names. All names were made up and newfangled at some point.

antsy · 06/06/2021 23:10

@Marmaladeagain I know why they chose it. But it is not as some are claiming a unique name.

CokeDrinker · 06/06/2021 23:12

@Ihavepixies Actually, Lili is the WELSH spelling for Lily.
motogogo · 06/06/2021 23:12

It's a cute nickname, not a proper name but I thought the same about Archie too. I have a thing about nicknames/shortenings!

Yep. Why leave Doria out of the picture?
antsy · 06/06/2021 23:14

@Ihavepixies they are American celebrities.

Marmaladeagain · 06/06/2021 23:18

no-one is saying it is a unique name - it is context that is being discussed. Context is relevant - if you want to honour the Queen - don't drag the RF through the gutter whilst her husband's laying there dying or put out a statement that you'll delay only if Philip dies....

That would be more respectful - putting a public statement out saying you're honouring the Queen is crass.

As ever, judge people by their actions and not their words. It's an easy nod to say you're honouring someone rather than do the actual graft of behaving in an honourable way. Words are cheap.

It's the hypocrisy I don't get - why do they expect a relationship with people they have openly attacked. Thomas feels entitled to a relationship but doesn't get one with Meghan - why do they think Harry is both entitled to speak about his family the way he does and also that he should be welcomed as family members.

antsy · 06/06/2021 23:20

@Marmaladeagain but you have zero idea what the RF think. Maybe the queen was asked and is thrilled with the name?

Gottalovesummer · 06/06/2021 23:21

Doria won't be left out at all.

She's the only one who'll be involved in the children's lives.

Serpenta · 06/06/2021 23:21

People really feel that they know these people. It's so bizarre. Getting offended on the queen's behalf. Why would you? Confused
