Thanksgiving? It is too much?

Hiya, I’ve name changed here as I’m giving my child’s name so just using this username for this thread.
I’m due baby girl in a few days, (Dd3) and my DH and I are trying to pick a name.

We are really looking for a virtue name - we have Dd1 who is Honour, and we also had dd2 who sadly was born sleeping, due to lots of complications in pregnancy, who we also gave a virtue name.

We are looking for a name that marks the joy of having another girl after our loss and for what has been thankfully a good pregnancy.

We can’t use Joy though as a baby in our very close friendship circle has just been name Joy. Also can’t use Grace for a similar reason.

We are thinking ‘Thanksgiving’, as this conveys thankfulness and a sense of giving back for our blessing. DH loves it and wants it to be a done deal but I am thinking - it’s quite a mouthful and a big name to give to a little girl, what if it’s too much? And what would we shorten Thanksgiving to?

Can I have your thoughts on Thanksgiving, or if you think it’s too much, do you have any other suggestions?

We are Christians if that gives any context.

I’m sorry for your loss but this is a daft name.

Would you be happy to be introduced as Thanksgiving Smith?

PegPeople · 01/05/2021 10:14

Would you like to be called Thanksgiving?

If so change your name and give your probably very dull boring name to your new baby. Problem solved.

FeatheredHope · 01/05/2021 10:14

I’m really sorry but it’s an awful idea. You know that Thanksgiving is a big holiday in America right? It would be the equivalent of calling a kid “christmas” or “hanukkah”.

Soubriquet · 01/05/2021 10:16

Other virtue names

Prudence
Hope
Faith
Charity
Haven
Felicity
Liberty
Serenity
Verity

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 01/05/2021 10:17

What about Blessing instead? It's already an accepted name. Or Faith?

TeenMinusTests · 01/05/2021 10:17

More traditional names in your theme would be
Faith
Hope
Charity
Grace

I'd go for Grace

Soubriquet · 01/05/2021 10:17

Harmony
Charisma
Glory
Mercy
True

PatrickBatemann · 01/05/2021 10:17

You're kidding, surely?

ViolaValentina · 01/05/2021 10:17

Sorry about your DD2 Flowers

I personally feel that Thanksgiving is a bit much, I've never heard it used as a name before.

I think Felicity means good fortune, could that work?

OshKo · 01/05/2021 10:18

I’m in agreement that it’s a little too much OP. You mentioned the word ‘Blessing’. That’s definitely a name and one as a teacher I’ve come across a couple of times, so that might be an option?

BunnyRuddington · 01/05/2021 10:18

I'm sorry I don't like it at all and probably for the same reasons as you. Just what would you shorten that to?

How about a Biblical name with a lovely meaning like Hannah which means grace?

Flappityflippers1 · 01/05/2021 10:19

I’m sorry to hear of your loss.

Thanksgiving is an awful name, I agree it’s like calling a child “Christmas”

What about “hope”?

Topseyt · 01/05/2021 10:19

I'm very sorry for your loss, but I still wouldn't do this.

Thanksgiving just isn't a name. Not at all. I think it would be embarrassing for a child.

What about Harmony, or Hope? They are at least names.

Scarby9 · 01/05/2021 10:19

Yes, it is too much.
There are so many beautiful names with meanings such as thanks be to God, miracle, blessing etc. eg. Amari, Arabella
If you want a more explicit name, what about Bliss / Blysse?

BettaSplenden · 01/05/2021 10:20

Yeah I don't think that will work. It's a mouthful and whilst cute as a baby how would an adult be with it, would it hinder them as a professional?

How about Faith or Verity?

ChocOrange1 · 01/05/2021 10:20

Definitely too much. Far too much. Sort of sounds like one of those puritan names. What would it be shortened to?

Here are some suggestions of virtue names which are a bit more realistic to use in real life:
Constance
Haven
Serenity (or Serena)
Felicity
Verity
Harmony
Faith

Or how about a name which means "Joy" such as Abigail or Beatrix. I actually think Beatrix and Honour go really nicely together.

My other suggestion would be Eden.

SnarkyBag · 01/05/2021 10:20

Sorry but I think it is awful and it only conjures up images of eating turkey to me!

It’s clunky and lacks any of the grace you might associate with other virtue names.

elenacampana · 01/05/2021 10:22

I can see your reasons for it, but I don’t think it’s a good idea OP. Essentially, it’s a huge American holiday so I think you’d be labouring your daughter with something that wouldn’t do her by favours.

Others have suggested Hope or Blessing, there is also Precious. I think they’ve probably got the same message as you were going for with thanksgiving, and would be nicer for you child.

Whythesadface · 01/05/2021 10:23

Please think of your child at this time and the years of abuse she will face if you use thanksgiving as a name.
13 Arabella

Arabella is a wonderful name of English origin with several different meanings. It means “beautiful”, “obliging”, “yielding to prayer” and “answered prayer.” This little girl's name is a true wonder, as it incorporates the popular “Bella” but with a unique twist.

RomainingCalm · 01/05/2021 10:24

Just googled and 'Emi' is a Japanese name meaning 'beautiful blessing'. You could use Emily nn Emi.

Cma1988 · 01/05/2021 10:26

Thanks for all the replies. I did kind of expect the response to be honest as I had a feeling it would be too much as a name.

I’m going to show DH the responses as he is still set that it is a nice name because of the meaning.

Our precious dd2, is Hope, and we also can’t use Joy and Grace, but I’m going to have a think about the suggestions given, so thank you.

I love Blessing, Harmony and Felicity, and Faith

I also love Hannah, but we also wanted a virtue name to go with DD1 and DD2.

Evenstar · 01/05/2021 10:27

Theodora means God given, might that work? Thea or Teddy as nicknames

PurrBox · 01/05/2021 10:27

Names meaning gift:
Dora (Eudora, Theadora)
Charis

What about:
Iris

A rainbow symbolises gratitude, in my mind-

SunnyJill · 01/05/2021 10:27

I love virtue names but just no.

What about faith?

EssentialHummus · 01/05/2021 10:29

Very sorry for your loss OP. I’d echo what others have said. I like Blessing and Faith Flowers
