My absolute favourite name for a girl is Story. Absolutely love, love, love it. I just know I could never use it in the first name spot for obvious reasons. I was just wondering if anyone else has a favourite name they’ll never use?

Enfys

Bluebell - it’s so wholesome and fresh but maybe a bit too wordy as a wearable floral name
Maple - its really sweet and I think it would make a great name for an autumn baby but in real life i feel people would ask “what, Maple like the syrup?”

Fox - I wanted to give this as a middle name for DS2 but DH vetoed it, which in hindsight was a good thing as it was the same time Lawrence Fox started to become a known knobhead😆
Ayrton - DH vetoed this one too and said it was too out there and too associated with Ayrton Senna’s untimely death
Taika - as it’s a Maori name I suppose it would be cultural appropriation to use it if I’m White British? Even if I really love Taika Waititi and his films?

Lemuel and Demelza. Not loved by either dh.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/04/2021 23:19

Ingenue - nn Gen. I know it's not really a "name", but I love the sound of the word (especially when pronounced properly with a French accent) - it makes me think of an old school Hollywood actress/character. I don't think I'd be brave enough to even use it as a middle name though!

ShowOfHands · 28/04/2021 07:51

I have a Raphael @Sandgrown1970

It's not even slightly bizarre!

vampirethriller · 28/04/2021 08:12

I know a Bluebell, she's 12 this year.
I love December and Calico. Wouldn't use either unless I get another dog!

Chilldonaldchill · 28/04/2021 08:30

I absolutely love Taliesin but dh vetoed and I'm not sure whether I would have had the courage anyway.
I really like Sage but wouldn't use it.

Sandgrown1970 · 28/04/2021 12:17

@ShowOfHands

I have a Raphael *@Sandgrown1970*

It's not even slightly bizarre!

Here in Blackpool when I was having my children, it definitely would have been thought as “out there” unless from an Italian background. I appreciate it’s different depending on where you are from and what kind of background.
Enko · 28/04/2021 12:35

Lakme' I always loved it. Dh was a firm no.

Always loved the names Regitze & Benedicte for girls Ulrich for a boy but I ended up living in the UK where they either can not be pronounced well or are so commonly used as a boys name the last E sound doesn't get heard and as someone with a unisex name and always hated it I wasn't putting that on my child.

I love Reginald and Horatio too less unusual and out there but very out of fashion. & firmly on dhs NO list

SingingSands · 28/04/2021 13:24

I like Sunday and January.

I went to school with a January and she was really cool!

Fedupwithpeople · 28/04/2021 13:29

@NeverTrustaRabbit Comso sounds like a bad IT support company! Joking! I'm sure you mean Cosmo x

Edenember · 28/04/2021 13:41

Ooh, I also love Eerika, which I don’t think of as bizarre, just Scandinavian, but other people would I’m sure (at least in the uk).

notalwaysalondoner · 28/04/2021 15:54

Thor.

NeverTrustaRabbit · 28/04/2021 17:11

@Fedupwithpeople of course I do.....or do I? 😂😂😂

IsItAllOverYetPlease · 28/04/2021 17:23

I wanted Vivaldi as my daughters middle name. we listened to a lit of the 4 seasons when I was pregnant.

BertieBotts · 28/04/2021 17:29

I love Phoenix, more for a boy than girl, but would never use it as I think it sounds too try-hard.

StevieNix · 28/04/2021 17:56

Lysander (DH vetoed it)
Silver (for a girl - again DH vetoed it)

StevieNix · 28/04/2021 17:58

O and Tigerlily for a girl I absolutely love but don’t think I’m brave enough to ever use it

LoveFall · 28/04/2021 18:18

I am strangely drawn to the name Mehetable. It was the name of one of my long-ago ancestors, a member of the groups of early America settlers in the Massachusetts area of the US.

It means gift from God.

iforgotyourenotbono · 28/04/2021 18:57

Wildeve

DotBall · 28/04/2021 19:21

Oh the joy of being born in the 60s...we had some cracking names in school / uni, born of the free love generation.

Quite a few up thread appeared, including Dorcas, Fox, Devon (female), Autumn, Sorrel (and we had a Candida).

Also knew of a Paxton (colleague’s brother) and a Maxwell.

DungeonKeeper · 28/04/2021 20:47

Calliope.

EdithGrantham · 28/04/2021 21:09

These were all vetoed by DH for our baby due in a few months
Bathsheba
Hepzibah
Birdie, also suggested Bridie when this was considered a bit too unusual but that was also a no
Beryl
Boudicca

Thinking about it, maybe I just like names starting with B Confused

DoLallyTapMum · 28/04/2021 22:17

Apollinaire (Apollo for short) is probably one of my favourite names, but for some reason I just didn’t “feel it” when pregnant with my son.

I love Atticus, Persephone, Greta (Thunberg has made this name awesome IMO) and lots of others people have listed here that are a bit archaic or mythological.

I hate mousy sounding or whimsical girls names though, particularly all those ending in ‘EE’ sounds. I realise this is contradictory as I like Persephone, but what I dislike is the super common Evie, Ellie, Millie, Molly, Mandy, Maisie etc. I’m a teacher and individually I don’t dislike these names but after reading out a class full of girls names mostly ending in ‘ee’ I distinctly dislike them.

askingrandomsonlinemighthelp · 28/04/2021 22:31

Is Silvia due a comeback? Sylvie, Sylvia?

Knocked off my list by sister and mother...

Sasha
Mungo
Gaylord (French pronunciation, so Gay- lore with a rolled 'r'.
Étienne
Pearl
Polly
Margaux
