We are due in three weeks and have really been struggling with names.

I think we’ve got it down to three names that we both like.

Francesca,
Paige,
Brooke.

Middle name is Vera Jean after grandmothers.

Opinions, (please don’t be too brutal 😂)

Francesca, nn Frankie is lovely.

Sansa87 · 16/04/2021 14:36

I’d love Vera Jean as the first names, but oh isn’t the biggest fan of old fashioned/traditional. Ames so that was vetoed pretty quickly 😂

Do you have Italian heritage? As I mentioned before Francesca is an Italian name. As someone of Italian heritage I would find it (culturally) in bad taste for someone with no Italian heritage to use that name.

@itwillallbeokay really? I’ve never heard such a thing Confused I’m Welsh but wouldn’t be offended if someone called their child a traditionally Welsh name.

Sansa87 · 16/04/2021 16:09

@itwillallbeokay I have 100% never heard this before, & know plenty of English people that aren’t named traditional English names.

We decided on a trip to Italy that we were ready for a baby and when we’d start trying for a baby and our waitress was very excited when we drunkenly told her, & insisted Francesca was a wonderful name if we had a girl.

Yes. If you heard a child called a Welsh name e.g Owain? Or Irish name Aine? Or Indian name Sanjay and they had no links to that country/culture people would question it. When Dani Dyer named her child Santiago lots of people questioned whenever the child had Spanish roots (he does -Dani's Grandad was Spanish).

You might not have heard of this but doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
I'm just making you aware.

Francesca has been common and popular enough in this country for such a long time that it would be rather ridiculous for someone of Italian extraction to get the arse about you using it, OP.

It would be like a Jewish person kicking off because you named your child Benjamin. Very unlikely.

No the name hasn't been used here that long. If you look most children that have been called Francesca do have some sort of Italian heritage.
sadpapercourtesan · 16/04/2021 16:18

That's simply not true. Francesca was a pretty common name at several of the schools I went to, in the 80s. Ordinary English kids growing up in the midlands.

Now I simply don't believe that. But it's up to the OP what she wants to call her child. Just making her aware of the cultural implications.
sadpapercourtesan · 16/04/2021 16:21

Quite so, and I'm pointing out that there aren't any cultural implications.

So you knew all these Francesca's in the midlands in the 80's? You know for a fact that none of them had any Italian heritage -grandparent etc. I think you're telling a few porky pies. As someone who does have Italian heritage I am letting the OP know that culturally using the name it is questionable. You may say it doesn't but you do not have Italian heritage.
Amelia666 · 16/04/2021 16:27

Love Francesca although I’d be cultivating “cheska” or similar as a nn as I strongly dislike Fran or even worse, Franny 😱

Oh give over.

Why?
sadpapercourtesan · 16/04/2021 16:30

Your 'Italian heritage' doesn't confer any greater knowledge of - or control over - British baby naming habits than anybody else.

Which is more likely:

a) I came onto a baby naming thread and randomly made up an entirely fictitious history of girls I knew 30 - 40 years ago called Fran/Francesca

b) you're assuming a greater level of knowledge than you actually have to make a mountain out of a non-existent molehill.

Ninkanink · 16/04/2021 16:31

There have been plenty of Francescas in the UK since the 1940s. Not all of Italian descent, by any means.

drpet49 · 16/04/2021 16:33

Francesca will almost definitely become Fran (not sure if that wld change ur mind).

^I used to work with a Francesca who was always known as Fran and sometimes Franny.

drpet49 · 16/04/2021 16:34

I like Paige

PurBal · 16/04/2021 16:34

I like Vera Jean as it is, no extra name.

Wow. You are being really offensive. I've just given a piece of advice to the OP about how culturally using the name can be questioned. As I said it's up to her if she uses it. But making aware of the cultural implications.
Amelia666 · 16/04/2021 16:35

@itwillallbeokay wow I can’t believe this bothers you! I knew several Francesca’s in the 80s as well - it has never registered in my head as a culturally inappropriate name!!! I think you’re being extremely ridiculous to get offended in any way over this.

sadpapercourtesan · 16/04/2021 16:36

No, I'm not being offensive. I'm just not rolling over in the face of your nonsense because you bleated about "cultural implications". There aren't any, and OP is safe to disregard your comments.
