Hi all,
I previously asked for help choosing baby two name but found out we’re now having a boy!

We already have a Hazel Elizabeth.

Our surname is short, two syllables and ends with an ‘oh’ sound.

We love the above names - Remus and Atlas. I’m more keen on Remus whereas my husband adores Atlas and is very much set on this!

We’ve entertained the middle name James for both, but wondering if anyone has suggestions for names in a similar vein to Remus and Atlas.

OP posts:

James is better than either of them tbh.

Atlas sounds like a mini cab firm/double glazing company. Remus is a mouse.

KirstenBlest · 02/04/2021 14:50

Both awful

Fivemoreminutes1 · 02/04/2021 14:52

Cassius

I love Remus.

Hiyawotcha · 02/04/2021 14:57

Angus.

Atlas is awful. Remus better. But hazel and Angus go quite well.

wombatspoopcubes · 02/04/2021 15:02

Love Remus. Don't like Atlas.

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 02/04/2021 15:02

I like both names but prefer Atlas of the two. I also like Sven, Magnus and Leif.

florascotia2 · 02/04/2021 15:03

Obviously, your baby, your choice. But:

Even if you ignore comments about Atlas being a book, the name Atlas is a lot to live up to; the Greek mythological character was a giant, and also pretty miserable.

Remus carries some unfortunate connotations, also. In Roman myth, Remus was murdered by his brother. And many people people have viewed the famous Uncle Remus stories (Br'er Rabbit etc) as racist: www.post-gazette.com/ae/books/2016/02/21/The-forgotten-author-A-place-in-history-for-Uncle-Remus/stories/201602210025

Atlas was a musclebound hunk who was punished for rebelling against the gods by being forced to carry the weight of the heavens on his shoulders, and was later turned into a mountain, in Greek myth.
If your DS turned out to be small and puny, the name would be cruelly inappropriate!
And was Remus not suckled by a wolf after being abandoned to die on a hillside as a baby. He was later murdered by his twin brother Romulus.
Not the most auspicious of names!

KurtWilde · 02/04/2021 15:10

When I think Remus I think professor lupin in Harry Potter, ignore any old negative connotations of you like the name.

TatianaBis · 02/04/2021 15:11

No-one has said Atlas is a book.

But the ubiquity of the myth means it’s over-used as a brand name. Eg Atlas roof lanterns and mini cabs.

florascotia2 · 02/04/2021 15:15

I think that it's pretty likely that someone will at some point if if a child is given this name.. And they most definitely have on past threads discussing 'Atlas' - not that long ago.

VenusClapTrap · 02/04/2021 15:17

Titus

MinnieJackson · 02/04/2021 15:30

Remi
Roman
Hayden

TheRedFox · 02/04/2021 15:42

These are my thoughts (FWIW)

  • I'm not keen on Remus - reminds me of rheumy / rheumatic etc
  • Atlas is quite a name to live up to!
  • Atlas and Remus strike me as being very different "types" of names to Hazel.
Maggie900 · 02/04/2021 15:51

Atlas

nancywhisky · 02/04/2021 15:56

Dennis?

SedentaryCat · 02/04/2021 16:08

One of my DCs goes by the name of Atlas. This is not their birth name but something they now want to be known by.

I don't mind it TBH. It's unusual.

daisypond · 02/04/2021 16:19

Neither go with Hazel. Remus has racist overtones with the Brer Rabbit stories. Founder of Rome myth also a bit unfortunate. Atlas - hard name to live up to, and not a happy character.

MooseBreath · 02/04/2021 16:29

Remus James is very Harry Potter. Don't know if that bothers you.

I quite like Atlas James!

TenThousandSpoons · 02/04/2021 16:33

Remus - makes me think of wolves/wear wolves.
Atlas - carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.
How about Remi, Rowen, Atticus, Arlo? Personally I think any of these goes better with Hazel.

Twizbe · 02/04/2021 16:38

James is the best name on that list. Would never use atlas or Remus

SweetToffee · 02/04/2021 16:39

John
Steven
Daniel
James

Silverfly · 02/04/2021 16:39

How about Leander? It means "lion of a man".

daisypond · 02/04/2021 16:41

Marcus
Julius
Darius
Felix
