Regret my daughter’s name Phoebe

Does anyone else regret the name you choose for your child?

My daughter’s Phoebe and I worry that other people might not like it ( didn’t realize it’s a marmite name ) that it’s too hard to spell ( we get Pheobe already didn’t think it would annoy me but it does ) or that she’ll get teased and be called Beefy ( didn’t think about that as a potential nickname when I choose her name ) or something else that’s mean .

Unfortunately it’s too late to change it now. She’s nearly 3. Other mums with a Phoebe, are you happy with that name?

Happy for any support !🙂 Thanks !

I’ve got a Phoebe and in the last 16 years she’s never been called “beefy.”
Her little brother aged 2 calls her BB and her mates called her either Phoebe or Pheeb’s.
She loves her name as do I.

Have read a lot of these name regret threads, and sometimes when I see the name used I do think ‘Ah yes, that’s a bit of a shocker!’ But I don’t see how anyone could think that about Phoebe, which is a perfectly nice, normal and uncontroversial name with a lovely meaning.

Fwiw DD has a name that’s a lot more ‘marmite’ than Phoebe and we quite like the fact that it’s not universally popular and will never be bothering the Top 10 lists!

TheRoaringGirl · 25/03/2021 14:56

@seatofmars ha, we probably know each other!

HotShowerNTea · 25/03/2021 14:57

Phoebe is one of my favourite ever names. It’s gorgeous! If I’d have had another DD I’d have used it.

TheGriffle · 25/03/2021 14:57

I have an 8 year old phoebe and I still love it, as does she. We do get the odd Pheobe spelling (in laws Im looking at you!) but she’s confident enough to correct people. She doesn’t get many nicknames if I’m honest, Phoebs being the most normal one.

MinnieMous3 · 25/03/2021 14:57

Love Phoebe ❤️ MN called my daughter’s name something that would be yelled across a supermarket by a chavvy mum, I couldn’t give a shit! Mumsnet name opinions don’t seem to reflect the general public’s, otherwise all children would be Charlotte or Kit.

Blackbird99 · 25/03/2021 14:58

I don't have a Phoebe but I love the name. I have a very unusual name myself, people can't say it let alone spell it, I had a few people saying it differently on purpose at school but not in a nasty way. Now I'm an adult I love having an unusual name. I know a few Phoebe's and I can't imagine it would occur to anyone to call your daughter Beefy :)

Winecheesesleep · 25/03/2021 15:00

I love it, it sounds very elegant to me.

seatofmars · 25/03/2021 15:02

@TheRoaringGirl Certainly not unlikely! Well, that certainly adds an interesting flavour to my new venturings on Mumsnet!

Haydugee · 25/03/2021 15:02

Beautiful classic name!

WaltzingToWalsingham · 25/03/2021 15:03

I don't have a Phoebe, but I do love the name. It's one that works equally well for a small child or a professional woman. It has elegance and history and mystery. Gorgeous!

Marcipex · 25/03/2021 15:06

It’s a pretty name, and under-used.
I have heard Beefy for Phoebe and was quite taken aback tbh. I’d never say it myself .

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/03/2021 15:06

It's a very lovely name.

littlepattilou · 25/03/2021 15:10

@LondonAnnie

Phoebe is a cute name. Smile Don't sweat it. No matter WHAT someone's name is, there will be someone who will make fun of it/take the piss.

Phoebe is a name that is quite hard to mock, so she will be fine! Smile

HiScore · 25/03/2021 15:10

Lovely name, it was on my shortlist for both my children, who both turned out to be boys!

I have a real marmite name for my son... Archie ♥️ Honestly some of the threads on here are vile about the name Archie and it’s upset me in the past (and I’m not a sensitive person) as I never realized it was such a marmite name and felt at times like I’ve given him a name that will stereotype him though life. Too late to change it though.

CaveMum · 25/03/2021 15:12

I know two Phoebe's (one adult who I have known for 20+ years and one pre-teen). The only nicknames I have heard for them are "Feebs" and "Fifi".

It's a beautiful name, don't worry about it.

And on the spelling front, I have a name that can be considered "tricky" to spell. It has two "official" spellings but honestly I have seen it spelt dozens of different ways, it washes over you!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 25/03/2021 15:13

Phoebe is pretty.

Dasher789 · 25/03/2021 15:14

i know a little Phoebe - she is a lovely girl and it is a lovely classic name. She gets called Phoebes and Phoebles affectionately. It never crossed my mind that she might have Beefy as a nickname and I have never heard anyone call her that so I think it might have been a rogue remark OP.

Tonty · 25/03/2021 15:14

I don't know who's been filling your head with all these weird thoughts but Phoebe is a lovely name and not hard to spell at all and I don't think about 'beef' either until, you said Hmm, only Phoebe from 'friends'.
Look, nasty people can manage to rhyme most names with something negative simply because they are negative people.
Please forget all this nonsense and just enjoy your Phoebe, its lovely.

Dixiechickonhols · 25/03/2021 15:15

It’s a nice normal name. But not so common there will be 4 in her class. If people spell it wrong it’s them being wrong. Nicknames are there from all sorts of names but no horrible ones spring to mind from Phoebe. I’d have thought feebs or bea would be common shortening. Does she have a nickname she likes?

Lemonandlime123 · 25/03/2021 15:16

Beautiful name.

Elle200 · 25/03/2021 15:18

I have a Phoebe, and just like her name, she is lovely. Don't worry about it OP, you chose well!!

youremyperson · 25/03/2021 15:18

Get her to spell it out to people like this

P as in Phoebe
H as in hoebe
O as in oebe
E as in ebe
B as in b-be
and E as in… ‘ello there, mate!

Grin
Ninkanink · 25/03/2021 15:18

It’s a lovely name!

I really don’t think anyone would connect Phoebe with beefy...

The spelling issue, welllll...if people won’t look it up to learn then that’s on them not on your daughter, whose name is perfectly fine.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 25/03/2021 15:18

I have one, i still love it. Friends have no problems spelling it and the only nick name is Bee or Pheobs, both of which she likes. We have never had a bad comment about it!
