I have gone through the top 1000 names in Scotland and chosen my top 5 favourite names. I want something relatively unusual. What do you think of these names? Will put Scotland’s rank position from 2019 in brackets beside each as they place quite differently here compared to England I think! Thanks x

Harris (5)
Cole (62)
Arlo (joint 62)
Roman (101)
Jenson (189)

Just to add, I like Arlo, if you/he can carry off being a bit alternative. Arlo Guthrie is an American folk singer (son of Woody Guthrie who wrote 'This land is our land').
Harris - nice, makes me think of Harris tweed
Cole - don't love it
Roman - a bit downmarket
Jenson - I like it, didn't know it had become popular

Jenson.

Roman

Taking every vote I can get for Jenson 👏🏼😂 Knew I liked it but wasn’t sure if it was one of those names if you told people that was the name they might not think it was nice instantly. Not that it should matter what anyone else thinks though! x

Only name that's nice on your list is Harris. The rest imo are not good names for a baby, child or adult.

What about Cameron or Kyle both lovely Scottish names.

Tambourina · 07/03/2021 23:33

Cole

Druidlookingidiot · 07/03/2021 23:33

Awful names, sorry.

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/03/2021 23:35

Harris is the nicest.

Cole I think depends on your accent but I'm not a fan.

We have an Arlo in our street, he's a wee shite and I'm sick of hearing his name shouted a million times a day.

Roman becoming popular but not in good way.

Jenson sounds dated somehow

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 07/03/2021 23:47

Cole

therocinante · 07/03/2021 23:53

Harris or Arlo.

Cole is the name of an awful Trump supporting Youtuber I came across so I can't stand it anymore haha!

Firebird83 · 08/03/2021 00:29

Roman and Jenson are downmarket. Arlo is trendy. Cole and Harris are ok.

RileyG73 · 08/03/2021 00:31

Cole is cool af. But I'm in England and have only heard the name on the film the sixth sense.
Harris is dreadful

AlwaysLatte · 08/03/2021 00:31

Eek, tricky! Struggling to like any of them... most of them sound like surnames and Cole could be cute except some people will inevitably pronounce it Coh (with a glottal stop) which would sound awful. Roman is ok if Romany origin, I think from those I'd chooses Arlo. But would prefer something similar like Albie?

Cole

OP I don't think we share the same taste in names, but there are lots of relatively uncommon Scottish boy's names, if you are interested in other suggestions. For example:

Keir, Blair, Fergus, Magnus, Maxwell, Adair, Mungo, Sholto, Fillan, Comrie, Ramsay, Brodie, Gregor, Duncan, Craig, Ewen , Niven, Wallace, Dougal, Scott, Aisnley, Aodh, Brice, Christie, Clyde, Coll, Shaw, Moray/Murray, Drummond, Fyfe, Grant, Glen, Murdo/Murdoch, Innes, Kendrick, Kester, Lyall, Crawford, Nicol, Ninian, Ranald, Ross, Tormod, Torquil ....

I've ment people with most of these names, but they are mostly not popular.

Nairn is usually a boy's name

Have always liked Blair but it’s very common where I stay now and a few other teachers in my school have sons called Blair. Quite like Coll because it’s unusual and Murray but the second name doesn’t sound dissimilar to Murray so it would be too much. I know Nairn is meant for a boy but I have just always preferred it for a girl. There was one girl called it at my school years ago and kind of decided then I’d use it as my girls name

I quite like Cole. Not keen on the others.

Roman is seriously gaining popularity and I think it will soon be top 10.

Whatsyourflava · 09/03/2021 00:20

Roman has been the fastest rising boy name most years for the past few years. It's pretty much the last name you'd consider if you're concerned about rising popularity. Has risen hundreds of places in charts and on its way to the top 20 on current trajectory
I understand when people say "oh but you can't predict what name will be popular". Well you can with names like Roman - take one look at the graphs of the official numbers

Rockmehardplace · 09/03/2021 00:38

I’m in Scotland and know 2 Jensons under the age of 7. I personally think it’s quite Chavy in the style of ‘Jayden/kaiden’ type names.

Roman to me makes me think of roaming in the gloaming but I love Rowan for a girl.

What about Lachlan or Brodie?

Hm2020 · 09/03/2021 00:44

Love Roman plan on using it if I have another child

Figgyboa · 09/03/2021 01:55

Arlo!

Maggie900 · 09/03/2021 02:19

Harris

Maggie900 · 09/03/2021 02:20

I absolutely cannot stand Roman. How is it becoming so popular?

It would actually slightly put me off a second date if somebody had that name.
