I have gone through the top 1000 names in Scotland and chosen my top 5 favourite names. I want something relatively unusual. What do you think of these names? Will put Scotland’s rank position from 2019 in brackets beside each as they place quite differently here compared to England I think! Thanks x

Harris (5)
Cole (62)
Arlo (joint 62)
Roman (101)
Jenson (189)

Harris has always been my number 1 boys name and our girls name would be Nairn if we have a girl after. They’re both place names in Scotland so thought they go quite well. It wasn’t til I looked up the list that I realised how popular Harris actually is and it’s also number 1 for my area as well as being 5th overall. I’m a teacher and had only ever taught one boy called Harris so presumed it was relatively uncommon but it’s clearly shot up in the last few years! X

Harris is the best of them, but I’m not keen on any of them.

sarah13xx · 07/03/2021 16:11

I love it! I think it’s my favourite and have never heard of anyone in Scotland called it! There are only about 25 babies called Jenson each year in Scotland so it’s really quite rare. I don’t know if it’s maybe seen as chavvy by some people because they think of a celebrity with that name but I don’t see that at all?! X

I like Harris, not so keen on the rest.

Nairn is interesting, I've not heard of it used as a first name before.

user1493494961 · 07/03/2021 16:14

Arlo is OK, don't like any of the others.

Lollypop701 · 07/03/2021 16:14

Roman is lovely

sarah13xx · 07/03/2021 16:17

Are you from Scotland? I’ve never met a Jenson here and I’m a teacher so usually hear every name going 😂 I think maybe it’s much more common in England so is sometimes used by more chavvy people but I don’t think he would get that reputation here when it’s so unusual x

Thanks for the replies, wow love the honesty 😂 but that’s what you come on here for, no one would give you an honest opinion to your face! Im a teacher so there’s so many of the lovely names are ruined for me unfortunately 🙈 I’ve also had sooo many pets over the years and have given them all so many nice names I’m now struggling with a child’s name! X

Jensons a great name, love it. Arlos good too.

I think so too, love Jenson but it does seem to get a lot of negative reviews 🙈 I like Arlo but don’t know if I like it enough to use! X

I like them all,but i Cole and Arlo are really popular where i am.

Roman is the best out of them.

sarah13xx · 07/03/2021 16:31

@Kanaloa

All nice. If you are looking for uncommon I would discount Harris & Roman - these are quite popular in my area. Cole is lovely and underused. Jenson is nice as well but I’ve known a few recently so maybe it is rising in popularity. I wouldn’t worry about it being ‘downmarket’ though. Your name won’t define where you sit in society, generally only money will do that, and Jenson is perfectly wearable. I’m not keen on Arlo, I just don’t like the sound, but it’s a fine name.

Harris is the best from your list IMO.

If I had a little boy now, I think I would call him Laurence. If it had to be Scottish, I would call him Alistair or Angus.

Jenson! That's my little ones name

Yeah I agree. I really like Roman but my other half isn’t keen on it and it’s a child in my class’ name this year too which puts me off a bit! X

It was originally my favourite but didn’t realise it was SO popular! Really like Angus but we have a friend called Angus x

Arlo and Roman. The rest are Meh.

glassshoes · 07/03/2021 16:38

Harris is best from your list. Others you might like with a Scottish vibe... Fraser? Cameron?

They are my partners first and middle names 😂 I love Harris but being a teacher I really don’t want him to go to school and be like so many kids I’ve taught with popular names when you get 2 or 3 in a class and have to call them their first name and last initial 🤦🏼‍♀️X

@sarah13xx

I don't think it's chavvy at all. You can relate any name to a celebrity. If you like it go for it! Who cares what anyone else thinks. I taught for quite a few years and there are plenty of names I really dislike but I never come across a Jenson. There are plenty of other names I would have said are more popular (and possibly chavy Wink) . I really don't like boys names ending in -den but we all like different names. Many people don't like my daughters name but it does really suit her (she is Roxanna)

Ritascornershop · 07/03/2021 17:00

Arlo, Roman is okay. The rest are surnames and I really dislike surnames as given names.

Yeah I know and Jenson Button is really not (in my house anyway) a big celebrity like David Beckham or the likes. I saw someone suggesting Beckham as a name the other day and I get that it would automatically be presumed to be based on David Beckham’s name but I wouldn’t be naming him Jenson after Jenson Button. It’s just kind of stuck the last few weeks, to the point I’m calling him Jenson in my head but really trying to decide before I keep doing that in case it’s not his name 🙈 that’s a lovely name too, love unusual names! X

I like Arlo but sorry I’m not mad on the others.

ILoveShula · 07/03/2021 17:13

Jenson will get called Jens or Jen.

MuddleMoo · 07/03/2021 17:20

I don't like Arlo. It's too "now".

Harris and Jenson are my favourites
