I have gone through the top 1000 names in Scotland and chosen my top 5 favourite names. I want something relatively unusual. What do you think of these names? Will put Scotland’s rank position from 2019 in brackets beside each as they place quite differently here compared to England I think! Thanks x

Harris (5)
Cole (62)
Arlo (joint 62)
Roman (101)
Jenson (189)

Jenson is my favourite (but I may be biased!)

It's occasionally shortened to Jens (sounds like Jentz) but only by a couple of people, school friends say the full name.

@ILoveShula

Jenson will get called Jens or Jen.
I thought probably Jens is fine but not keen on Jen as a boy’s nickname x

It’s my favourite too I think! Yeah I thought that. It kind of came to my attention as a name because Lucy Carter who does YouTube videos has a son called Jenson. She calls him Jens like that too and I thought that’s an alright nickname! I also like the fact absolutely no one from my area is called it so it would be really unique. Just hope it doesn’t become too popular here in a few years as I know it’s more popular in England x

@MuddleMoo

I don't like Arlo. It's too "now".

Harris and Jenson are my favourites

They’re my favourites too and Harris I think might be ruled out due to how popular it seems to be in my area now. Glad you like Jenson though, it seems to divide opinion on here! X

@M0rT

I like Cole and Arlo best the only one I am not that keen on is Jenson.
Do you just not like the name Jenson in general or is it because you know of a lot of Jensons? I really like it because no one in Scotland is called it and I have never taught a child called it (so hard to find a name where that is the case now)! X

@DramaAlpaca

I like Harris, not so keen on the rest.

Nairn is interesting, I've not heard of it used as a first name before.

Yeah Nairn is rarely used as a first name for boys in Scotland (about 10 per year) but I have loved it for years as a girls name. I just knew when I found out the gender that if it was a girl that would have been the name. Hope no one steals it for a girl before I have one now 🙈 would prefer my boys name to sound Scottish so they match but it’s so hard to find any we both like, that aren’t too common and I haven’t been put off of by a child at work 😂x

I like Arlo, not so much the rest.

Jenson only became a boy's name in 2010, the year after Mr Button won the world championship.

Arlo has become very popular in a short time. Where I live it sounds like Ah-low or Harlow, a town in Essex.

Roman is another one that has appeared out of nowhere, might be too linked to a Mr Kemp. Not keen on the sound of it.

I know an adult Cole (real name Colin), and I wasn't keen on the name when I first heard it. Joel seems more substantial.

I know an adult Haris (pron Harris, he's British Pakistani) so Harris seems less faddy than the other names.

Yes we are not big fans of Roman Kemp at all and we always say he pops up on every show going so I think that’s why my partner isn’t keen on Roman! 😂

It just makes me think of Roman Empire and roman nose. Ronan and Rowan are both nice, but lots of R names are popular at the moment.

MMM2 · 07/03/2021 18:43

Arlo is the only one I like.

I really like R names, love Rowan but I like it for a girl x

I think we have very different taste in names (I tend to prefer more traditional ones) so I wasn't going to reply, but I do like Cole (although I really like it as a nn for classic Nicholas, so there's less risk of it dating).

Harris isn't awful I guess (although if you are going down the surname as given name route, I think Scots names Fraser, Lewis and Brodie are much nicer).

Arlo and Jenson are getting very trendy so I'm not that keen, and Roman unfortunately reminds me of dodgy Polanski (as well as getting confused with Ronan and the popular but lovely Rowan).

CatBiscuits · 07/03/2021 19:16

I don't like any of them I'm afraid and Roman and Arlo are actually very popular where I am (England).

We have a dog called Nico who we call Nicholas so that ones out 😂 Lewis was one of the names I really liked but is quite common here and I have had a lot of Lewis’ in my class over the years. Arlo is getting trendy here and I don’t think I’d actually use it but do like it. Jenson is very rare here though and I’ve never met or even heard of anyone called it. Think it’s a very different name in Scotland compared to England though. Love Rowan but have always liked it for a girl, it’s another one that I don’t know anyone named it x

Arlo and Roman best out of those - I'm not a fan of 'sound like surname' first names.

Harris and Jenson

Me too, that was the one I was hoping people liked 😊

Harris (5) - I don't dislike Harris. But I would worry that people would think it was short for Harrison - which I think it's horrible. Harris is rather sweet though. I'm shocked by how popular it is in Scotland. I've never come across it (in London).
Cole (62) - I really don't like this. I can't see anything attractive about it at all
Arlo (joint 62) - my favourite. I really like it. I love Ivo too.
Roman (101) - I'm not keen.
Jenson (189 - really really really not keen

Yes I much prefer Harris to Harrison. I didn’t know it was popular at all and I’m a teacher but have only ever taught one child called Harris. Then when I went to check the most popular names for Scotland it was number 5 and number 1 in my area 🤦🏼‍♀️ Really don’t want him to end up with someone else called the same name in his class at school. I think Cole was my least favourite of them but just didn’t like many at all. Love Arlo but don’t know if I’d actually name my child it. Jenson was my favourite due to how rare it is in Scotland (literally no one here is called it) but it definitely seems to divide opinion on here. Think it must be way more common in England and sometimes used by chavvy people so it gets a bad rep 🙈

Thing is sometimes you pick what you think is unusual then you hear it everywhere after

Oh really? I got the impression it was really popular there, it’s number 75 I think! That will no doubt happen no matter what I pick 🤦🏼‍♀️
