We're expecting DD in spring and having trouble deciding on a final name. Wanted to try and avoid anything that's in the top 20-30 as my name is quite common!

Which do you prefer?

  • Erin
  • Martha
  • Maya (although not sure if the pronunciation will be an issue, I'm thinking to rhyme with fire/liar)
  • Nola

Nola is New Orleans
Maya is a pain to pronounce
Martha is a lamb

So Erin I suppose

partyatthepalace · 11/02/2021 15:41

Erin for me

Not keen on the other three. To get Maya pronounced the way you want I think you’d need to write it Mya (which I think is very harsh compared to the May-ah pronunciation). Nola makes me think of a slightly tragic character in a Maeve Binchy novel, and Martha always makes me think of the dreary biblical drudge.

Can’t really go wrong with Erin though.

NewBabyGirlMummy · 11/02/2021 15:42

I had a baby girl 11 months ago ... called her Erin!

So I'm biased but I love the name

PatchworkElmer · 11/02/2021 15:46

Erin. I like Maya but would pronounce it ‘May-ahhh’, which is how the only Maya I know pronounces it. So yes, you’re probably right about that being an issue!

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/02/2021 15:48

I'm no help as I love all your names. My friend has a naughty Maya rhymes with fire, I know a beautiful and gentle teen called Erin. Martha was on my list and Nola is beautiful.

So I would choose Nola based on the fact I know people with the others

Namechanger0800 · 11/02/2021 15:49

Martha - lovely name

caringcarer · 11/02/2021 15:53

Not keen.on any of them. I obviously have different taste to you.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/02/2021 15:56

Erin or Martha; love them both but Erin just edges into the lead for me.

There are so many Maya, Maia, Myla, Miya, Mya, Mila names around at the moment that they just make my head spin, tbh... I can't keep track of how to pronounce them all (especially when there are two in a class; same spelling but different pronunciation 🤦🏻‍♀️).

Never come across Nola before so no real opinion.

mmgirish · 11/02/2021 16:06

Love Erin

PattyPan · 11/02/2021 16:06

I love Erin. Martha is ok.
Nola made me think Enola (Gay) or like you hadn’t finished writing Nolan. I don’t like Maya as a name, it’s like calling a child Mesopotamia to me.

Florence95 · 11/02/2021 16:22

I love Martha!

HelebethH · 11/02/2021 17:37

I have known 3 people called Erin in my life and they have all been lovely people. Only one had Irish links. It's my favourite,

zingally · 11/02/2021 17:56

The only probably with Maya, is that she'll have a life time of "Maya-Mya" and no-one will know. I'm a primary school teacher, and would default to May-ya, rather than My-ya.

I think Erin is the prettiest of the bunch.

Pudding01 · 11/02/2021 17:57

Erin!

I have an Erin and get so many nice comments about her name. Only ever met one other child Erin and she was a little blonde cutey too. I gave her a softer middle name to balance it out :)

DramaAlpaca · 11/02/2021 19:09

Nola for me, or possibly Erin.

I'm not keen on Maya, and Martha is just so dreary.

HairyToity · 11/02/2021 19:11

Erin and Martha are my favourites.

HairyToity · 11/02/2021 19:14

If Maya is to rhyme with fire, then you need to use the Welsh girls name Mair.

GintyMcGinty · 11/02/2021 19:17

Erin

PattyPan · 11/02/2021 19:21

@HairyToity

If Maya is to rhyme with fire, then you need to use the Welsh girls name Mair.
I think people would have more difficulty knowing how to pronounce Mair when their first see it - I don’t speak much Welsh so I would have guessed mare. Whereas most people have presumably heard of the Mayans?
Esssa · 11/02/2021 19:23

We've picked Erin for our baby who is due in March so that's my vote. Nola reminds me of Enola Holmes the film about Sherlock Holmes sister. Not a bad thing.

HairyToity · 11/02/2021 19:30

I don't speak any Welsh, but have lived close to the border all my live and would instantly know how to pronounce Mair.

Maya on the other hand I would pronounce May-a.

Literaryseed · 11/02/2021 19:34

Martha. Lovely name.

Figgyboa · 11/02/2021 19:37

Maya

DigitalGhost · 11/02/2021 19:40

Maya or Maia (although I'm biased as I have a Maia)

Namingtrends · 11/02/2021 19:42

Martha makes me think of the Handmaids tale so I would go for Erin which I find lovely :)
