We're expecting DD in spring and having trouble deciding on a final name. Wanted to try and avoid anything that's in the top 20-30 as my name is quite common!

Which do you prefer?

  • Erin
  • Martha
  • Maya (although not sure if the pronunciation will be an issue, I'm thinking to rhyme with fire/liar)
  • Nola

Martha!

hulloall · 11/02/2021 11:25

Nola or Maya x

skidadle · 11/02/2021 11:31

Erin, Nola, mya maya then Martha

Grapesoda7 · 11/02/2021 11:32

I really like Erin

Mimilamore · 11/02/2021 11:46

Nola or Martha... Maya is super popular in these here parts and Erin is beautiful but again starting to appear more and more. Of course if you don't mind popularity go with the one that YOU like best

ChilliChaos · 11/02/2021 11:50

Erin.

Prefer Nova to Nola

abc31 · 11/02/2021 11:52

Not Erin for me, a bit of an ugly name. Nola sounds a bit eclectic so I'd go for one of the other two (Maya is my favourite).

macdhui · 11/02/2021 11:54

Nola is awful, just don’t

TinyCake · 11/02/2021 11:56

Erin or Martha for me, lovely names.
Maya I would go for Mya if you want that pronunciation. But there are so many variants around I wouldn't use it.
Nola - I don't like it sorry.

Whatsyourflava · 11/02/2021 12:02

Martha by a mile
Just love it!

angelaEhen · 11/02/2021 12:05

Martha

digbygreen · 11/02/2021 12:09

Martha

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/02/2021 12:11

Erin - lovely, a nice name
Martha - too dowdy/dull sounding for me
Maya - pretty, international - I think you will get the Mya pronunciation 90% off the time anyway so I wouldn't change the classic spelling)
Nola - not keen, sounds trendy/invented

Erin or Maya for me (maybe check the ONS stats for your area to see which is the least popular where you live?)

Thefaceofboe · 11/02/2021 12:33

I vote Nola! It was briefly on my list but due to being a broad northerner living down south.... I couldn’t bare the NOOOO-la comments I’d getGrin

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/02/2021 14:34

Erin - should be ok but I find it harsh sounding and nothingy
Martha- fine
Maya (although not sure if the pronunciation will be an issue, I'm thinking to rhyme with fire/liar) - don't like
Nola - don't like

Dyra · 11/02/2021 14:42

Erin is a lovely name. Would be a contender for a future daughter's name, but 2 people I know used it for their own DD's! Apart from those two Erins, I know no others, so it's not overly popular.

Otherwise I really like the sound of Nola. Very pretty sounding. Extremely unusual.

Maya you're always going to get pronunciation issues no matter what. Martha is an old person's name. Don't do it to a baby!

Quercus3 · 11/02/2021 14:49

Nola or Maya

Nola is automatically capitalised by my autocorrect so wonder if it is an acronym for something?

Quercus3 · 11/02/2021 14:50

Ah it's just New Orleans as mentioned above!

LunaHardy · 11/02/2021 15:17

I have a Maya, I do get the odd person who pronounces it as May-ah and not My-ah. I just correct them the first time and it seems to stick. I also really like Erin too. We seem to have similar taste in names Smile

endlesssnow · 11/02/2021 15:23

Nola does make me think of New Orleans which is a fantastic place but maybe not the vibe you want for a baby daughter?

Erin is a nice name, would assume Irish heritage but not an issue.

Maya is pleasant but I know a good few of them.

I would choose Martha I think.

Pemba · 11/02/2021 15:34

I really like Maya, and your pronunciation is the correct one, which most people should know.

Don't mind Martha although, as a pp said it somehow has a bit of a dowdy vibe (probably from biblical Martha/Mary references). This is probably unfair. I find the mainland European version, Marta, really pretty.

Nola, hmm, OK.

I actively dislike Erin, somehow it has a fake American Irish vibe. Also, 'The Waltons'.

highlyflammablegreymatter · 11/02/2021 15:35

Martha

Hilochickalo · 11/02/2021 15:37

Thanks everyone! It seems Martha is most popular followed by Erin and these two are our top contenders! Will have a think and perhaps wait and see which one she suits once she is here Smile

I love Martha and Maya but Martha just wins out.
I'm not keen on Nola or Erin.

Smellybluecheese · 11/02/2021 15:40

Martha
