How do you feel about the girls name Dolly? I know its often a nickname for Dorothy but i just like Dolly on its own. OH not convinced

I absolutely love it but would never use it I'm afraid.

FortunesFave · 25/01/2021 14:09

I loved it when I was expecting DD....DH did not.

he said "How's that going to sound when she's 25? Or 48?"

And he was right! Cute as it is, it's not a long lasting name.

AdultHumanFemale · 25/01/2021 14:11

Hm. I do like it.

AmigoingcrZy · 25/01/2021 14:12

Do you not think Dolly Parton makes it much more wearable into adulthood and beyond?
I also really love Lola, but OH thinks the song ruins that one!

It always reminds me of Dolly the sheep!

How about Molly, Holly or Polly? All are lovely names imo

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 25/01/2021 14:13

Dolores or Doris are also sometimes shortened to Dolly but I think in the olden days it was a kind of nickname that was used for a small petite wee girl.

bruffin · 25/01/2021 14:13

My nan was Dorothy and called Doll or Dolly but no to Dolly on its own

AmigoingcrZy · 25/01/2021 14:13

Mollie (this spelling) us also on the list! As is Lucy, Lola and Olive

My dd is named Dolly after my Nan and I love it, it really suits her! A lot of people weren't fussed on it when I was pregnant but I was adamant. We did give her a more traditional middle name in case she ever wants to go by that

orangenasturtium · 25/01/2021 14:23

But Dolly Parton is always "Dolly Parton" professionally. It dilutes the effect of the name. Besides, she has a brother called Randy so I wouldn't take naming tips from her parents.

How about Dolores? Both Dolly and Lola work as nicknames for Dolores.

GwendolineWindowlene · 25/01/2021 14:23

It wouldn't feel right to me to name a daughter not only a cutesy 'y' name but also something that's the name of a toy. It just feels so insubstantial.

KirstenBlest · 25/01/2021 14:35

Hasn't done Dolly Alderton any harm

Dolly will be at school with a Teddy or two, I expect.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 25/01/2021 14:36

I work with small children and it's not uncommon to hear "Put down [younger child], they're not a doll," which would put me off. I also think it could be very hard for a self-conscious teenager to pull off.

TwoSwans · 25/01/2021 14:36

I love Olive and Lola!

AmigoingcrZy · 25/01/2021 14:38

Thanks for all your replies! I like the idea of a traditional middle name in case she'd prefer that- my mum and I actually both go by our middle names as adults. I dont think this thread will completely sell my OH on the name so its probably out but thanks all for your replies! I think we will probably go with Lucy. That's what OH's parents were going to name him if he were a girl.

I think that unless she grows up to be a country singer, Dolly is much too cutesy.

While I personally find Lucy at bit cute/sweet sounding too, it's a classic name that's unlikely to embarrass an adult.

Molly (this traditional spelling) is also okay imo. But I find Lola a bit trendy (although a lovely nn for Louisa), and Olive too dated for my taste, sorry.

ignatiusjreilly · 25/01/2021 18:16

I know a Dolly in her late 30s. It doesn't seem to have held her back in life. She's great!

As with all names, once you get over your initial surprise upon hearing it the first time, it just becomes their name.

Babydust13 · 25/01/2021 18:26

I love it 🥰

ParisJeTAime · 25/01/2021 19:21

I like it for a baby, but wouldn't like it on a 36 year old hedge fund manager or whatever she ends up being when she grows up. It goes from cute (on a child) to on an adult being a bit...downmarket maybe?

ParisJeTAime · 25/01/2021 19:22

Lucy is lovely!

thecognoscenti · 25/01/2021 19:23

I think this is the point - it's not just 'Dolly for a baby girl', it's Dolly for a teenager, a thirty something, a middle aged woman.

Sheleg · 25/01/2021 19:32

Not a fan! Girls aren't dolls.

micc · 25/01/2021 19:33

I looooove it! I also love Trixie!
My daughter is called Roxy and we got mixed reviews too Haha, but it really suits her and we love it. Everyone else will too once she is here. I really like Dolly :)

EdgeOfACoin · 25/01/2021 20:59

Dolly is an awful name. I'd be embarrassed as anything if my parents gave me that name. It's the infantilised name for the toy of a little girl.

At least put Dorothy on the birth certificate so she can have a sensible name if she wants one.

LizFlowers · 25/01/2021 21:05

I don't like it. The reality TV star, Chantelle Haughton, called her daughter 'Dolly' but she is an Essex girl (called Chantelle).

Don't call your baby 'Dolly', she is not a doll.
