I think it’s just going to be utterly grim on anyone over 7. I would be mad as hell with my parents if they called me that. Don’t do it! Or if you must then call her Dorothea/Dorothy/Dora/Delores as use Dolly as a nn - then she can change it to Dora or Dorey when she’s a teen!

Sendingasurprise · 25/01/2021 21:34

Dolly, Bunny, Bunty, Lolly...all that similar WW2 landgirl feel. How about Polly? Nancy? Pearl?

Sendingasurprise · 25/01/2021 21:38

Lola is a showgirl name...can't get away from the song. Lettice? Louisa? Luella?

DragonPoop · 25/01/2021 21:56

I do actually love it and it’s not the type of name I usually like.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 25/01/2021 22:03

It's a lovely diminutive for Theodora.

Theodora Lucy AmigoingcrZy

Everybody wins.Smile

Flymetothestars · 25/01/2021 22:18

Lucy, Lola, Molly and Dorothy are all lovely

I'd be seriously nervous calling a girl Dolly as her official name incase she grows up to be a larger build or not conventionally attractive or whatever. It really is a lot to saddle someone with. Fine if you're international gorgeous millionaire Dolly Parton.... I'd hate it being my own name for example. I think Dorothy or Dolores or nickname Dolly would be better. Dolly as a middle name even.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 26/01/2021 00:37

I love it, my grandmother's (nick)name for her whole life and suited her even as an adult. I would definitely give her a long name tho - for some reason it is gorgeous as a nn but a bit Katie Price as a full name.

Ladybird69 · 26/01/2021 02:17

I love Dolly as a pet name for a Dorothy and Dorothea. Same as Georgie pet name for Georgina and Georgiana.

zigaziga · 26/01/2021 08:07

I don’t like it. I’m not sure Dolly Parton, famous for being a flamboyant singer and having massive hair and massive boobs kind of like a Barbie doll normalises the name. Almost any name is fine if you’re famous anyway.

This is very true I think.

cherrypop86 · 26/01/2021 08:11

I went to school with two sisters called Dolly and Minnie. Both got absolutely slaughtered for their names.

Flymetothestars · 26/01/2021 09:42

I'm just picturing my year group at school and imagining how awful and ridiculous it would have been if the vast majority of us average misfits in that year group were called Dolly. I think we envisage our children being the coolest in the school but statistically that is extremely unlikely
If a nickname like Dolly developed naturally I think it's fine though and if the child don't like the nickname after a few years they can revert to their formal name. Whilst changing your name to a middle name is a possibility and happens a fair amount, it's worth remembering its quite a big step to suddenly introduce yourself with a new name and have to explain to people why "Dolly" doesn't suit it might be quite traumatic at a young age.

VenusClapTrap · 26/01/2021 11:12

Infantilising. Please don’t.

RuthW · 26/01/2021 12:31

Dreadful but nice as a nn for Dorothy

LittleGwyneth · 26/01/2021 15:46

@KirstenBlest

Hasn't done Dolly Alderton any harm

Dolly will be at school with a Teddy or two, I expect.

Her real name is Hannah!
EdgeOfACoin · 26/01/2021 16:31

It also sounds like you don't have very high aspirations for her. A 'Dolly' deciding a court case or performing complex surgery or delivering a lecture on protons sounds faintly ridiculous.

"Doctor Dolly Smith"? "Professor Dolly Lewis"? These titles all sound like they were given by a five-year-old playing with her toys.

I knew a very nice woman once whose name was Bimbo. In her case it was cultural and derived from her heritage. Fine, but Bimbo has connotations that make it not a great name in 21st century Britain. Dolly is the same.

Medusastill · 26/01/2021 17:32

Cute but no. Dolly Parton can carry it off.. but she's a exception.
Nice as a nickname for somethign that has a bit of gravitas for adulthood tho.
And those suggesting Lola ..pretty much every female Labrador I have met dog walking seems to be called Lola at the moment! Again, nice as a nickname but probably not the full name!

GintyMcGinty · 26/01/2021 17:36

Its awful.

emmalynn · 26/01/2021 17:41

I really like it

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 26/01/2021 17:45

Awful. She is a human not a doll, it's not a name for an actual person. Yes, I know Dolly Parton but she is very much an exception!

NinaMimi · 26/01/2021 20:03

As an awkward teen I wouldn’t thank my parents for that name. Also there are connotations with that name of being pretty and feminine. Those are put on girls and women enough without their name bringing that upon them.

AmigoingcrZy · 28/01/2021 14:25

Thanks for all your opinions.
Theodora isn't a name we considered but we actually like it alot so is now an option! Thanks for that! I also appreciate all your reasons for not loving the name, and I do agree with some and it made me really consider how she would be portrayed in a professional sense when she's older. Even though I dont think you should judge someone on a name its probably inevitable it will happen when you have 100's of applicants for a job and need to get it down to the 7/8 for interviews.

Give her the nickname Dolly! Then you still get to use it day to day without it being on her BC.

Dolly and Pinky are quite run of the mill Indian names so I wouldn’t pick them, but they’re perfectly good.
