Thoughts on the name Piers

I’ve always liked the name Piers. As Piers Morgan has become a household name over the years I’m concerned people would immediately associate the name with him and he isn’t necessarily well liked. Would this put you off using the name?

He wouldn’t put me off using the name but it does conjure up a certain image (maybe unfairly)

Poppyolive90 · 08/01/2021 13:23

Hopping good to know he doesn’t put you off. What kind of image do you mean?

Piers Morgan would put me off using the name. Saying that, I wouldn’t assume the parents of a baby Piers were big fans, but I imagine they would very quickly get tired of comments.

Goldendeliciousness · 08/01/2021 13:27

I wouldn't use this name. The name is so rarely used that it would always make me think of Piers Morgan.

sqirrelfriends · 08/01/2021 13:29

I wouldn't be able to shake the association.

I could imagine little Piers at nursery playing with his friends Niles and Gordon.

custardbear · 08/01/2021 13:31

I've knows two people called Piers so don't auto think of Piers Morgan - in fact I always think of him as a piers-Morgan and not just piers

DacwMamYnDwad · 08/01/2021 13:32

Piers Brosnan.

yankeedoodledandee · 08/01/2021 13:35

@DacwMamYnDwad

Piers Brosnan.

Pierce. Not Piers.

BigusBumus · 08/01/2021 13:39

I love the name Piers. I know 2 and never think of Piers Morgan!

It has a "posh" sound to it without being over the top. Kind of like Hugo, Miles and Rex.

VenusClapTrap · 08/01/2021 13:44

Objectively it’s a nice name, but its association with upper class twattery would be too strong for me. And I say that as someone who had ‘posh boy’ names like Tristan and Sebastian on my list.

Cameleongirl · 08/01/2021 13:47

Piers is an old name ( Medieval perhaps?) and I like it. I would not worry about the Piers Morgan associations, he’s in his 50’s and your child’s future friends won’t know anything about him.

Anyone who had a problem with the name is just being daft. it’s been used for centuries.

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2021 13:51

Posh but a bit dim

TheVanguardSix · 08/01/2021 13:52

It was on my shortlist for DC1 (who is 19 next month). It was the author Piers Paul Read that made me think 'good name'. It's also a family name on my Irish side.

I'm convincing myself to love it all over again. Grin
I have an Alec... all Guinness and no Baldwin. Grin Actually, NOBODY ever makes a Baldwin reference, so please don't assume you'll have Piers Morgan reference to deal with. You won't. People become their own name.

ajandjjmum · 08/01/2021 13:53

Piers Corbyn is another.

CoddledAsAMommet · 08/01/2021 13:58

I know a teenager called Piers Morgan Surname.

It's a good name, underused but known.

NeonSparkle · 08/01/2021 14:05

I’m afraid I can’t shake the association OP - it did make me immediately think of Piers Morgan. I couldn’t use it for that reason but as a stand alone name it’s nice enough.

partyatthepalace · 08/01/2021 14:16

I think it very public school sounding. If that doesn't bother you crack on, people might associate with Piers Morgan now, but not once he's older.

Poppyolive90 · 08/01/2021 15:25

Coddled you mean his name is first name Piers middle name Morgan? Shock

OP posts:
Terracottasaur · 08/01/2021 16:00

Piers Morgan has totally ruined it for me.

Tavannach · 08/01/2021 16:03

Bit wet tbh.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/01/2021 20:18

I think it's very associated with Piers Morgan at the moment unfortunately (with adults at least, but kids won't be aware so I wouldn't think a child with the name would be teased). It's a shame though, as it's a nice name despite past "posh" connotations. If you can't get past it, Hugh or Guy have a similar feel to me?

maddsclairelouise · 08/01/2021 23:54

I didn't even think of Piers Morgan when I saw the name Piers. I think it's a beautiful name!

TramaDollface · 08/01/2021 23:56

Red jeans.

SionnachRua · 08/01/2021 23:58

I immediately think Morgan, yes.

CoddledAsAMommet · 08/01/2021 23:59

PoppyOlive90 - yes, Piers as first name, Morgan as middle name. Thinking of it he must be around 20/21 now so while PM was well known for being a newspaper editor he wasn't on TV as much. I think his parents just thought the two names sounded right together and didn't realise that was because they'd heard them somewhere before!
