Hello, I'm wondering what people think of Saxby. A friend mentioned the name to me and now I can't get it off my mind. I'm not sure whether I like it or not and can't think whether I've heard it before.

Other names I like are
Jace
Roscoe
Abel
Simon
Timothy
Axel
Fred

Sounds like a place name to me. And also weirdly difficult to say.

QueenieButcher · 23/12/2020 10:29

Saxa salt brand? I don't like it to be honest.
Of your names I like Axel and Abel best, (followed by Roscoe but not enough to consider using it).
Jace isn't a name (or if it is, sound like a NN for Jason, yelled across the pub in very Essex accent).
Fred is creepy (Fred West)
Timothy and Simon are rather drippy boys from my primary class.

partyatthepalace · 23/12/2020 10:36

It sounds very... strange? Like a brand of table salt.

Abel is nice. Simon and Timothy classic. Fred is cute (I’d use a full form - Alfred or Frederick for the birth certificate).

The rest of them are pretty much as strange as Saxby. Just no.

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/12/2020 10:39

Roscoe is the name of the sheriff in Dukes of Hazzard.

Kingkong66 · 23/12/2020 10:39

I'm not keen.

Fred, Axel or Abel are my favourites from your list

DrMadelineXMASwell · 23/12/2020 10:41

Always consider potential nick names when picking a name. Think teenage years and mockery.

MonkeyPuddle · 23/12/2020 10:41

Nickname of some bloke my friend was shagging in her teens, he was very greasy.
It’s a no from me.

BaronessBomburst · 23/12/2020 10:41

I quite like it!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/12/2020 10:42

It's not actually a name, is it?

Timothy, Simon and Frederick/Wilfred are all solid names.

ApocalypseNowt · 23/12/2020 10:44

Sounds like a dog's name to me for some reason Confused

ivfbeenbusy · 23/12/2020 10:45

Awful HTH

Starisnotanumber · 23/12/2020 10:45

A lifetime of spelling it out and explaining they are not called sexy.
Nooooo

frogswimming · 23/12/2020 10:47

Saxby - is that an actual name? Sounds made up to me.

Jace - no, awful.
Roscoe - no, awful.
Abel - um ok.
Simon - bit 1970s.
Timothy - also 1970s.
Axel - rose.
Fred - this is the only name from your list I like, but I would prefer Frederick or Alfred, shortened. Fred on its own sounds unfinished.

LemonBreeland · 23/12/2020 10:48

Saxby - bloke from Harlots
Jace - very Teen Mom
Roscoe - Dog or Dukes of Hazzard
Abel - like this
Simon - too 70's 80's
Timothy - wet
Axel - okay
Fred - okay

CassandrasCastle · 23/12/2020 12:35

Axel is my fave. Unsure of the others...

ShowOfHands · 23/12/2020 12:38

Saxby Hall is the setting for David Walliams' book "Awful Auntie". Owned by the Saxby family. It's a surname at best.

wowfudge · 23/12/2020 12:41

Saxby is a place in Lincolnshire. I wouldn't saddle a child with it as a first name. Roscoe reminds me of the Sheriff in DoH too. Simon and Abel are okay - both Biblical names.

movingonup20 · 23/12/2020 12:43

It's a surname and a place name. Give your kid a proper name for their cv, if you want something unusual just have it as a nickname. And Jace is a shortening for Jason

showgirl63 · 23/12/2020 12:47

Sorry but if you're over 50 it just m ans pork pies!Grin

Saxby?
lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 23/12/2020 13:02

I think at school poor saxby will be plagued with kids shouting 'sexy' as a joke . Poor saxby

Franke · 23/12/2020 13:11

Sounds like something you'd buy in Ikea. Sorry. There are better names on your list.

finallychangedmyusername · 23/12/2020 13:16

Yes to Timothy, Simon, Frederick, Jason. Timothy and Simon are such great names.

Abel is a real name, but I just can't warm to it. Ditto Axel. Roscoe gives me gangster vibes, sorry (not sure why).

No to Saxby for me. It makes me think of Saxon.

Go with Timothy.

RockyTigerScarf · 23/12/2020 14:34

Thank you for the feedback. Abel, Simon and Roscoe are my favourites on the list, aswell as Fred but I'd have a longer form of the name on the birth certificate if I went with Fred as I agree that sounds unfinished.

Saxby Smart!

There a series of children's books based around this character.
