Hello, I'm wondering what people think of Saxby. A friend mentioned the name to me and now I can't get it off my mind. I'm not sure whether I like it or not and can't think whether I've heard it before.

Other names I like are
Jace
Roscoe
Abel
Simon
Timothy
Axel
Fred

Not keen on Saxby - I think it sounds more like the name of a company than a person's name, if that makes sense?

Jace - no, sounds like a nn for Jason
Roscoe - I like this a lot, it's actually quite an old name, and is also the name of Roscoe Mitchell, one of my husband's favourite composers.
Abel - a bit too biblical for me
Simon - bit boring / geeky sounding
Timothy - a bit wet, similar to Jake and Toby
Axel - nope - a big name to live up to - I also just think of it as being part of a car.
Fred - lovely, would use as a nn for Frederick or Wilfred.

Your name choices are pretty wide ranging, so it's quite hard to come up with other suggestions, but here are a few you might like -

Orson
Oscar
Rex
Casper
Milo
Ansel
Jasper
Felix
Magnus
Nathaniel
Sebastian
Levi
Jude
Zachary
Theodore / Theo

Sounds too much like sexy. Other kids will take the piss.

Saxby sounds like the three-bed house on a new Wimpy Homes estate 'The Saxby' or the name for some ready-made John Lewis curtains, part of their Saxby range in a pale brown check.

alexdgr8 · 23/12/2020 23:18

sounds like a shoe shop. no. not for a person. only a brand.

TuxedoPanther · 23/12/2020 23:40

Is Saxby the guy in the Devil’s Whore? I really enjoyed that.

Could go v. well as a teenager- Sexy Saxby. But also not.

andpeggy1 · 23/12/2020 23:44

Why not Saxon? It's much stronger sounding, similar to jaxon

Shout out the name a few times as you would over a playground- how does it sound to you?

WildCherryBlossom · 24/12/2020 03:37

Saxby was the middle name of a boy I went to school with. No idea why I remember that. I'm not keen asa first name but you could use it as a middle name.

I love Roscoe. I think it has some meaning related to red deer. I was quite keen on it when pregnant but DH vetoed on the grounds of Dukes of Hazard (which I have never seen so didn't bother me).

Jace is unfinished. How about Jake or Jason?

I far prefer Abel to Axel. I can't get away from hearing axe in Axel.

Similarly I hear Slime in Simon, which is a shame as I want to like the name.

Quite like Timothy.

Saxby sounds like the name for a carpet Imagine it having a high wool content and loop pile

Any word can easily become a tongue-twister if an 'x' is followed by another consonant - it doesn't flow very easily.

I think you would also be leaving him open for lazy 'sexy' and similar 'jokes'. It would invariably be shortened to just 'Sax' - and then you're handing it to the teasers on a plate.

I don't know what the PP's problem with Simon and Timothy is - they're perfectly nice normal names, even if you wouldn't personally choose them.

Of your list, I wouldn't definitely go for Abel. I think it's long overdue a revival and sounds quite funky (whether in full or as 'Abe'). True, you'll also get some trying to make weak jokes about 'are you able to do that?' and the like, but they can easily be fake-laughed/humoured away as being pathetic; and able as an adjective is a very neutral, everyday word - not at all like 'sexy'.

@MrsMoastyToasty

Roscoe is the name of the sheriff in Dukes of Hazzard.
Yes Xmas Grin

I don't know why that made me laugh quite as much as it did Grin

calimommy · 24/12/2020 17:43

Saxby sounds like a place which would be ok but for the similarities with 'Sexy'.

Meganwarbs · 24/12/2020 21:04

Saxby - please just don't. Kids can be cruel.

Jace - sounds like a nickname for Jason, not keen
Roscoe - not the worst name ever but not keen personally
Abel - quite nice, Biblical name
Simon - a bit 70s/80s as others have said, but still a nice name
Timothy - same
Axel - strong name, quite like it
Fred - Bit of an old man name, Freddie is quite cute though

I've seen far worse name lists on here so not sure why you've had such rude comments!

HeronLanyon · 24/12/2020 21:06

I too just thought salt.
Your list is quite mixed ‘jace’ is particularly not to my taste - short for Jason or is this a full name ?
