Euan.. what do English Mumsnetters think?

I like Euan but I was brought up in Scotland where it was a common and nice name. Since moving to England I have discovered that some Scottish names I like (such as Callum) are not well liked here (someone told me it was a ‘chav’ name 🙄).

So if you are from England, is Euan a name you are familiar with? Do you like it? Does it have any particular associations for you? Would you prefer the spelling Ewan?

I really like it, prefer your spelling rather than Ewan. It would be on my list but is also the name of a family member. I also like the Welsh version, Ioan, though pronounced differently.

I prefer the Ewan spelling. It’s a bit like Ieuan (Welsh) to look at but different pronunciation. Probably not a problem if you live in England.

I prefer Callum to Euan personally, but I think both are fine.

I think the Ewan spelling is more common.

I know a little Euan in England. No Scottish heritage, his parents just loved the name!

I think it is a good, strong, traditional name, which travels well within the UK and Ireland. I think they'd struggle in France, but that probably isn't a concern!

I know a dreadful adult Euan, but that isn't his name's fault . His parents and siblings are delightful, so I still think of it as a good choice of name.

I'm in Scotland and have a Ewan

I’d say it’s a familiar name with no negative connotations.

I went to school with a Euan (down near London) and have positive associations - he was very handsome and a really nice chap!

I have a Ewan and he (luckily) really like his name. He's only ever been the one at school but strangely in Scouts there were two Ewan's.

Fine, so long as your surname isn't 'Mee'.

Nothing like Callum, it's never been too trendy here. I usually see it on middle-aged men rather than children. Posh Scots, if you will!

My brother is Ewan - born and brought up in England (Scots parent). No problem at all over the last 50+ years. The name has definitely become more common in England

And there's at least one more potential spelling -Ewen. But spelling hasn't been an issue either.

I’m welsh and thought it was Welsh tbh. I’ve got a welsh daughter with a welsh name who I’m bringing up in england. It’s not a problem really, everyone pronounces it correctly, I’d have spelt it differently if I’d have known I’d known I’d have ended up raising her in England though. Her name ends in an ‘I’ which is correct in Welsh, but in England it would have been ‘ie’ or ‘ey’, the spelling I’ve used looks a little chavvy in England.

I like it but I also associate it with the rather marvellous dream sheep!

Euan is beautiful

My son has several friends called Euan/Ewan. We're in England, though very close to the Scottish border - don't know if that makes any difference? I've certainly never considered it to be anything than a nice, normal name. Definitely no bad associations of any kind around here as far as I know.
