Euan.. what do English Mumsnetters think?

I like Euan but I was brought up in Scotland where it was a common and nice name. Since moving to England I have discovered that some Scottish names I like (such as Callum) are not well liked here (someone told me it was a ‘chav’ name 🙄).

So if you are from England, is Euan a name you are familiar with? Do you like it? Does it have any particular associations for you? Would you prefer the spelling Ewan?

DP is Scottish and called Euan Grin

MikeUniformMike · 25/11/2020 17:07

I'm not English but i am British, and I like it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 25/11/2020 17:10

I really like Euan.

Harmarsuperstar · 25/11/2020 17:13

It's inoffensive

Trousersareoverrated · 25/11/2020 19:23

Thanks all. I think I'm decided! Might not even be a boy but its a weight off my mind that DH and I have a name we can agree on.

I'm not sure if this is just me - might be because I'm Welsh - but I would pronounce Euan and Ewan differently - YEW-en and EW-en respectively. Maybe I have just been pronouncing one or the other wrong.

Either way it has no negative connotations in mind. Connor unfortunately does but that's the fault of a few bad Callums, not the name itself, which is lovely

MerchantOfVenom · 25/11/2020 21:14

Ewan is pronounced Yew-an.

As in, Ewan McGregor.

Lindy2 · 25/11/2020 21:19

I like Euan and Ewan.

I also like Callum. I don't regard it as Chavvy at all. It's quite a popular name where I am (London/Surrey borders) and I know some families, who are definitely not at all chavvy, with sons named Callum.

Millie2013 · 25/11/2020 21:26

(It makes me think of Ewan the Dream Sheep)
But I really like it!

Vintagegirl77 · 25/11/2020 23:07

I have a Ewan, we live down south. I love the name. Go for it.

Tomatoandbasil · 26/11/2020 21:39

Love this name

BikeRunSki · 26/11/2020 23:12

I like Euan/Ewan. I know people with both spellings in England, although one of the Euans I know is Scottish. Whichever spelling you choose, some people will use the other one by default I think. It’s a good name though, that would stop me from using it. I much prefer this name to Callum.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 27/11/2020 07:11

Lovely name although prefer Ewan as a spelling.

festivebug · 27/11/2020 08:22
  • I'm not in the UK

I like Callum, however, I strongly dislike Euan / Ewan.

twoofusburningmatches · 27/11/2020 08:27

Like the Euan spelling best. Know quite a few successful middle-aged men with the name - who are lovely. So has positive connotations.

PoodleMoth · 27/11/2020 15:44

I prefer Euan, know quite a few. Definitely not seen as 'chavvy' round where I live

NoNarniaBecauseLipstick · 27/11/2020 21:21

Calum and Euan are both my cousins. But not brothers.

Neither of them is remotely chavvy.

ilovespinach · 27/11/2020 21:34

Euan is what I'd call my imaginary 4th son

ChrissyHynde · 27/11/2020 21:41

I gave a Euan , love it , but a bit biased!

billybullshitterz1n · 27/11/2020 21:47

I have a 24 year old Ewan

yeOldeTrout · 29/11/2020 09:30

I'm not English & I don't like Euan sounds like start of "Ooh yuck" to me.
Sorry but you did ask.
Callum is fine. Lots of Scottish names are nice.

dementedpixie · 29/11/2020 09:39

Euan starts with a 'you' sound not 'oo'

yeOldeTrout · 29/11/2020 10:31

That makes it worse, putting the yyyy sound so close to ooo, makes it sound like yick or yuck.

dementedpixie · 29/11/2020 10:40

How strange Hmm. Sounds nothing like yick or yuck

yeOldeTrout · 29/11/2020 10:58

not to you... look OP is asking strangers. She's welcome to completely disregard our opinions. I dunno why ask strangers if you don't at least want to consider their reactions. Must be some reason to ask.
