Throckmorton

My first DS is due in December (already have 3 girls) DH really wants to name him Throckmorton after his cousin. I am concerned that Throckmorton doesn't really work in the UK, ( DH is American) should I insist its a middle name and use a 'British' first name instead. Our daughters all have classic 'Elizabeth' type names. What do you think?

You are right.

Morton might work slightly better?

Cumbersome · 10/10/2020 23:32

Love it. That's what I call a boy's name.

DramaAlpaca · 10/10/2020 23:33

It sounds a bit Dickensian to me, and it's not exactly an attractive name.

How about shortening it and using Morton instead?

DramaAlpaca · 10/10/2020 23:34

Sorry, x-post above!

Toontown · 10/10/2020 23:36

I rarely hate a name but fuck me that's a terrible name. He will be fuck Morton forevermore

feministfemme · 10/10/2020 23:36

You could call him Mort / Morty? It's a little bit grandpa but "grandpa-chic" is always increasing in popularity.

Jason118 · 10/10/2020 23:37

It's not a name it's a village, surely?Grin

TwilightSkies · 10/10/2020 23:40

What? Is this some kind of joke?

No, do not name your child Throckmorton. Unless you want him to hate you forever.

Like the Throckmorton plot? That's what comes to mind for me anyway. At a stretch, a middle name.
I am of the opinion that there aren't enough young Johns any more.

Quandaries · 10/10/2020 23:45

You could call him Throcky for short.

People will be too worried that they’re insulting someone with a speech impediment to query it, and will just call him Rocky.

FelicityBeedle · 10/10/2020 23:45

It’s a village in Worcestershire as memory serves, maybe a (terrible) middle name. Tell DH he will possibly be teased mercilessly

SylvanianFrenemies · 10/10/2020 23:46

How about Balonz?

feministfemme · 10/10/2020 23:47

Alternatively if you didn't like "Mort" you have a delightful range of nicknames including; Throck, Throcky, The Throckstar.
The possibilities are endless.

Ohalrightthen · 10/10/2020 23:47

His cousin throckmorton, the skateboarder?

yearinyearout · 10/10/2020 23:47

It is a village in worcestershire,I've been there! It's a terrible name for a child, Morton is just about passable.

Bunkumum · 10/10/2020 23:50

Midsomer Murders? Isn’t Throckmorton right next to Fletcher Cross and just along from Granville Norton?

Tinty · 10/10/2020 23:50

Tell DH to introduce himself to people over the next couple of months as Throckmorton. Then see how long he still thinks it’s a good name.

feministfemme · 10/10/2020 23:51

Hahahaha my initial thought also!
Throckmorton
BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/10/2020 23:51

No, just no. You are totally right, that is not a name to inflict on a British boy (I know Americans do naming differently so it may well be fine over there, but you need a name that works on both sides of the Atlantic and this ain't it)

feministfemme · 10/10/2020 23:52

Tried to attach a screenshot of the Throckmorton meme but not sure if it worked ...

Throckmorton
feministfemme · 10/10/2020 23:52

Oh whoops, there we go! Double Throckmorton for your viewing pleasure.

babbi · 10/10/2020 23:54

Ha ha @Bunkumum. I thought of Midsomer too !
OP you cannot call your child the name of a village that Chief Inspector Barnaby solves murders in ...its awful .
Morton would be ok

Pudding01 · 10/10/2020 23:55

I would consider myself quite open minded with names... However this is the first time I have spat my drink out!

I think a mn, if it is important to your other half. But I just can't see it going down well over here 😕 sorry

Glad im not the only one who made the connection. Felt very young amidst all the suggestions to call him Morton.

Do not call a child Morton, people. Not even for a meme.
