"Stripper" names

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 07:43

In the thread on the name "Summer", several posters have said it sounds like a stripper. Likewise, "Riley" is a name that some posters called a "porn star"name. Summer is a lovely name that is used widely in the form Sam, Sameera, and so on. Riley was a strong female character in a popular film.

What basis do people have for trashing names by saying they are sex industry names?

I mean Riley Reid is a famous porn Star so maybe that's why. Don't get Summer though.

The only name I'd think of as a stripper name is Rich/Roxanne. Because of Moulin Rouge.

CorianderLord · 09/10/2020 19:27

Roxy not rich

Chicchicchicchiclana · 09/10/2020 19:29

I have literally no idea what are stripper or porn star names. The only porn star I can name off the top of my head is Mary Millington.

So ... Mary?

emilyfrost · 09/10/2020 19:29

Riley has the porn connection because of huge porn actress Riley Reid.

It’s such an uncommon name anyway that someone who has made it into the public eye with it will be remembered, and since she’s a porn star, the name Riley will invoke porn star connections.

?What basis do people have for trashing names by saying they are sex industry names?*

It's their opinion, it doesn't have to the same as yours or mine or anyone else's.

I don't see either of those names as stripper or porn like but obviously others do.

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 23:33

I have never heard of Riley Read, and that as an example of evidence for why a name might have unfortunate associations. If someone has an opinion, but isn't going to tell you why, then you can't tell how important their opinion is. Maybe they had a traumatic time and the name is a trigger - but only for them. Or maybe a whole group of people would be offended by the name. So it does matter, but not if it's just hard to spell or unfamiliar.

Yep, I always think of Riley Reid when I hear the name Riley, so I can understand that point. Like a PP said, it doesn’t help that it’s an unusual name.

A porn star called Evie or Lily wouldn’t cause the same connotations because they’re such popular names anyway

emilybrontescorsett · 11/10/2020 15:30

I think a lot of the problem is surnames. I still don't get why women with perfectly nice surnames lumber their child with a terrible surname which leaves them open for having the piss taken out of them.why give the child the dad's surname when it is clearly awful. Then give them an equally dubious first name.
There are some horrible, silly sounding names out there which cause the recipients untold problems and embarrassment.

Cheeeeislifenow · 11/10/2020 18:20

When I tjink of bad surnames I always think of when I worked as cold caller, the name flashed in screen. Me:"Hello can I speak to Mrs cockburn please?" Her,"It's pronounced co-burn" and hung up the phone 😂

ComfortablyNumb89 · 11/10/2020 20:24

@Lavenderleaves I agree. For example Clara and Ophelia are favourites on MN and I think they're both awful (sorry if anyone here is called that or if their daughter is...just personal opinion).

I like the name Summer and I don't think it's stripper-ish. The first thing that comes to my mind is Summer from the OC. It's a lovely name.

MikeUniformMike · 11/10/2020 20:31

I dislike Clara and Ophelia is pretty but wouldn't entertain using it.

I upset someone on a thread where OP was going to call Lydia's sister Ophelia. I thought it was a joke thread. Blush

TurquoiseDress · 12/10/2020 18:23

Stormi is a total stripper name for me!Grin

TurquoiseDress · 12/10/2020 18:24

Summer does not seem stripper-ish at all.

Have I missed something in understanding this?

SeanCailleach · 13/10/2020 08:17

@turquoisedress that's exactly my point. There are names that are full of light and warmth that some people throw dirt at. It seems like a sport for some to laugh at other parents' decisions.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/10/2020 08:23

Wow Summer is considered a stripper???!- god I hope not as I have one Hmm

The only name I came across which sounded stripper esque to me was Ebony

SeanCailleach · 13/10/2020 09:03

Ebony is a Black name. It's a gorgeous, deep, evocative name that conveys resilience and strength.

I’ve known a white Ebony

@Soubriquet it's a lovely name.

I presume OP meant literally.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 13/10/2020 11:06

In the words of a magnificent 21st century poet:

As live as me. Don't know the same guys as me. But a lot of style. Unusual name like Ivory.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 13/10/2020 11:09

I agree with my n*as
You the baddest
I ever seen in a long time
But woman with her own shine.

Name your child Ivory and she will be a woman with her own shine believe because it is written. Amen.

Anoisagusaris · 13/10/2020 11:13

My first thought from the OP is how is Sam a variation of Summer?

ReeseWitherfork · 13/10/2020 11:27

I don’t know any strippers. My only experience of the profession is from TV/film whereby the women usually give themselves cutesy/sexy stage names. I have no idea if that’s particularly accurate. Although “Summer” doesn’t fit the bill for me, I can see why that might be a common opinion. For example, I can see why people would think that of “Summer” over say “Jane” or “Alice”.

I really begrudge comments like “people are so judgey” or whatnot. Don’t come onto a forum asking for opinions if you don’t want people’s honest opinions!

OP if you like the name Summer then carry on. If a lot of people think of it as a “stripper name” then there’s not a lot you can do there.
@movingonup20

One thing is to dislike names and disdain for your own DC but I’m absolutely flabbergasted that incredibly unfair prejudice at not being considered based on your merit for a job application but considered based on a name you were given not by personal choice.
I can imagine it though. If you're looking to project a certain image to your clients, a prospective employee's name may well provide a tie-break (though the employer would never openly admit that I daresay).

FourPlasticRings · 13/10/2020 11:48

I've always thought stripper names are food names like Candy, Honey, Sugar or Cookie, endearment names like Precious or Sunshine, car makes like Mercedes... Names chosen to appeal to the client base. Of course, a stripper would be unlikely to use her given name for work purposes so it's a bit of a moot point. Summer Streak is a bit of an innuendo though, so I wouldn't advise someone to use it.
