"Stripper" names

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 07:43

In the thread on the name "Summer", several posters have said it sounds like a stripper. Likewise, "Riley" is a name that some posters called a "porn star"name. Summer is a lovely name that is used widely in the form Sam, Sameera, and so on. Riley was a strong female character in a popular film.

What basis do people have for trashing names by saying they are sex industry names?

I don’t think either sound like stripper or porn star names. Confused

Greenglassteacup · 09/10/2020 08:02
Hmm
MikeUniformMike · 09/10/2020 08:07

I don’t think either sound like stripper or porn star names either. They're not very classy.

Riley doesn't strike me as feminine and it sounds like a car brand.

Summer is ok but rhymes with Bummer. Sam could be used as a nn I suppose, but I'd think of it as being short for Samuel. Samantha, Samia or Samina. Sameera is an islamic name that has no connection with summer.

rorosemary · 09/10/2020 08:10

It wasn't just the first name Summer that made it sound like a stripper though, it was in combination with the last name. Nothing wrong with a Summer+ordinary last name.

Brighterthansunflowers · 09/10/2020 08:16

Well on the other thread it was the combination of the name with the surname Streak so not really much of a leap to stripper! Hmm

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 09/10/2020 08:16

I love the name Summer.

CallmeFP · 09/10/2020 08:19

I think there’s some names that people perceive as ‘white trailer trash’ American type names. Snobby.

froomeonthebroom · 09/10/2020 08:21

I don't think Summer is a stripper name but it conjures up a picture of a certain look. Both Summers I know do not suit their names at all.

Riley is a naughty boys' name. I work in a secondary school. Enough said!

Ohalrightthen · 09/10/2020 08:24

Tbh I've picked a name for DD2 (though not even concieved yet, and def not guaranteed to be a girl) that i KNOW my mum and sister (and probably MIL) will say is a stripper name. I don't really care, i love it.

user1493494961 · 09/10/2020 11:40

On the other thread, the child's name would have been Summer Streak, which really doesn't go, and the Op herself asked if it sounded like a stripper. I think Lola is a 'stripper' name.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 09/10/2020 11:49

Summer is a lovely name that is used widely in the form Sam, Sameera, and so on.

I think people just keep getting the name of whoever you know called Summer wrong.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 09/10/2020 11:50

I think Lola is a 'stripper' name.

Possibly, but if so the blokes getting a private dance are in for a surprise.

Cattermole · 09/10/2020 11:53

The only Lola I know is a lurcher dog....

When I was born 50 years ago my mum wanted to name me after the midwife who was a lovely Jamaican lady. Well, Roxie the Jamaican midwife looked at my pasty white Lancashire mother and said "you want her to sound like a stripper?"
Always makes me laugh.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 09/10/2020 11:53

I agree, OP. Some people are so snobbby- there is no such thing as a stipper name.

How about Cashmere, Gigi, Stormy or Desiree for your daughter?

movingonup20 · 09/10/2020 12:04

@CallmeFP

Yes I admit I like many dislike these sorts of names. I always think about what will happen when they are adults - I've worked in hr and we passed over applications from people with names we didn't think were appropriate for client facing roles, we would get 300+ applicants for maybe 2 positions interviewing 8 at most.

Summer is ok but these weird spellings or simply bizarre names would be looked over

PlantPotting · 09/10/2020 12:20

It was largely because of full name Summer Streak not because of the Summer part on its own, I don't think

BigBadVoodooHat · 09/10/2020 12:27

What basis do people have for trashing names by saying they are sex industry names?

The fact that that's their opinion? Nobody needs a 'basis' for having the opinion that a name sounds stripper-ish Confused

"Weird spellings", "bizarre names"? That sounds like ignorance and prejudice.

I was once told Lauren was a stripper name !??!

Put me off the name which was a shame as I like it but once said, I couldn't unhear!

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 12:45

I don't get the connection. It really hurts because Summer was the name I had picked for dd, and when I told my sister and best friend they both separately hooted with laughter and made the same association which absolutely floored me. I didn't use the name - and my dd is such a sunny summer.

The thing is, I've met plenty of working girls and they have names like "Angie", "Sandra", "Mary". Some use professional names like "Baby Jane", "Little Suzie", or "Tracey". Literally just ordinary names you'd hear anywhere. I get that "Stormy" might present some difficulties especially with surname "Daniels", but "Riley" was a space travelling hero in "Alien" wasn't she?

OP posts:
CuntAmongstThePigeons · 09/10/2020 12:50

I'm sorry op but I have known many strippers called Summer. Not that that should put you off the name if you like it. Besides some of the most fabulous women I've known have been strippers.

Backofthenewt · 09/10/2020 12:51

In Alien it was Ripley, and it was her surname.

Summer doesn't usually come up on stripper name threads does it? It's usually Sapphire!

BigBadVoodooHat · 09/10/2020 12:57

but "Riley" was a space travelling hero in "Alien" wasn't she?

No. SW's character in Alien (assuming that's who you're referring to) was Ellen Ripley.

Ripley, doh! That actually sounds like a first name.

Sapphire - have to laugh, my very strait laced grandma wanted me to be called that.

@SeanCailleach the issue with Summer Streak is because a Streaker is someone who runs naked in a public place. So I assume some people thought Summer Streak together sounded a bit stripper like like a description of an event 'The Summer Streak'.
I personally love the name Summer and Mumsnet is terrible for putting people off perfectly normal names, this site is notoriously snobby. Summer is a top 100 name which means children will come across the name regularly and think nothing of it.
You shouldn't listen to others. As long as you haven't chosen something completely ridiculous you should go with what you love!
FWIW Summer is my top name if I ever have a girl.
