"Stripper" names

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 07:43

In the thread on the name "Summer", several posters have said it sounds like a stripper. Likewise, "Riley" is a name that some posters called a "porn star"name. Summer is a lovely name that is used widely in the form Sam, Sameera, and so on. Riley was a strong female character in a popular film.

What basis do people have for trashing names by saying they are sex industry names?

Summer on its own I don’t consider a stripper name, it’s actually quite nice and very inoffensive

Summer Streak (streak as in idiots running naked through public places) I would because of the connotation of streaking being in the realm of stripping!

I know there are other better uses of the word streak, but when asked if it’s a stripper name, that was the first thing that popped into my mind!

Cheeeeislifenow · 09/10/2020 13:14

Riley is in inside out, (not a stripper).

Cheeeeislifenow · 09/10/2020 13:16

@movingonup? Really? You would pass people over based solely on their names?
Do you realise that's highly discriminatory?
So what anyone with a"foreign looking mame" is not even considered. I really hope you are making that up.

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 13:20

@MikeUniformMike I did have a friend Sameera who told me her name was from an Arabic word meaning "summer". In Modern Arabic the word for summer is "sayf" which is also a root for lots of popular names along the lines "Sayfa".
Sam is Old Irish spelling and sounds better than "Sámh".

Summer Streak sounds stripperish as Streaking means taking clothes off and people wear less clothes in the summer so it sounds like a nudist convention.

Summer with most other names is fine imo. The ones that aren't fine is pairing it with a name like Rose - Summer Rose sounds like paint or a Zoflora fragrance

In England I think that "American names " sound like a stage name. By American names I mean girls having "boy" names like Riley. Riley is not the character from Alien but she's the lead in the Pixar film Inside Out which is a good film

BeKindItCostsNothing · 09/10/2020 14:26

@SeanCailleach, Sameera is the feminine form of Samir.

CallmeFP · 09/10/2020 16:34

@movingonup20

One thing is to dislike names and disdain for your own DC but I’m absolutely flabbergasted that incredibly unfair prejudice at not being considered based on your merit for a job application but considered based on a name you were given not by personal choice.

Soubriquet · 09/10/2020 16:41

I don’t think any names are stripperish tbh. Or chavvy

I just have names I prefer and don’t

I’m not keen on Summer but that’s my personal preference not a “dislike” of the name.

I actually prefer Winter or Autumn

im5050 · 09/10/2020 16:59

I worked with a woman called Sumner
I always without fail spelt it wrong

Italiandreams · 09/10/2020 17:04

Very much equal. We are very lucky.

Italiandreams · 09/10/2020 17:05

Sorry wrong thread!

WiserOwl · 09/10/2020 17:09

I like name summer.

Some names are a bit sex industry though. Lolita, Dolly. They have to be quite unusable.

micc · 09/10/2020 17:20

I do not have that association with the name summer at all!
People are soooo quick to judge on here about names. If my baby is a girl I'm calling her what I want, someone did say to us as well is sounds like a stripper.
I honestly dont care. I knew one girl who worked as a stripper and her name was Mia.
Try not to think about other peoples opinions as I know a little baby called summer and that thought didnt even cross my mind once. It's a bit messed up to think about that in regards to a baby imo. Any name that isn't Olivia or Oliver isn't going to get a great reaction on here I've found out. But it's such a small population, a lot of people are so open about names now.

FeminismIsForALLWomen · 09/10/2020 17:24

What basis do people have for trashing names by saying they are sex industry names?

Snobbery mainly. A chance to insult working class people for names they like combined with making a dig at sex workers by implying their very existence is an insult is just too much to resist for some people.

You touched on this yourself, but it's very true that strippers or other sex workers are more likely to use 'normal' names like Isobel, Ellie, Annabelle etc, so their accusations of having a stripper name are as inaccurate and ignorant as they are unkind.

I've worked in hr and we passed over applications from people with names we didn't think were appropriate for client facing roles, we would get 300+ applicants for maybe 2 positions interviewing 8 at most.

Then you should be ashamed of yourself. If it's such an issue in a customer facing role (which it isn't) then they can have a different spelling or different but similar name on their name tag. Instead you've allowed your own snobbery to interfere with finding the best person for the job.

Plussizejumpsuit · 09/10/2020 17:29

I think people just say that when they mean the name is tacky.

SeanCailleach · 09/10/2020 18:03

@FeminismIsForALLWomen you rock.

Exotic dancers tend to be working class and lower class women and teenage girls for obvious reasons. From experience names like Summer or Ruby tend to be more common amongst working class, lower middle class ppl etc.
Having said that women I know of who strip chose a stage name and tend to go with something with a "sexy" "cute" "exotic" theme like Jasmine, Carmen, Angel, Bella or Crystal. Etc.

I think of Summer as being sweet and cheerful but wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if there are a few stripper Summers out there but Idc and it wouldn't put me of using it personally.

Lavenderleaves · 09/10/2020 18:07

MN is snob central and many on here speak as though they are the authority on class. There is a lot of terms like stripper and chav banded about by people who are ready judgy. I've even seen comments about names that belong on a 'council estate'. Yes it's that bad and I wouldn't take MN and their opinions as a large demographic for the rest of the world.

Old fashioned (not to my taste and pretty awful names) are loved on this site. Some really hideous names but it seems those are embraced as the epitome of taste and I don't get it.

I love the name summer 😍 I also love the name Scarlett (apparently a stripper name) and Autumn, oh and Sky too.
And ps I'm not a stripper.

rslsys · 09/10/2020 18:08

Fanny was a popular name in the 30's. Oddly not much used now.

Lavenderleaves · 09/10/2020 18:09

Exotic dancers tend to be working class

Case in point.
Hate to burst that bubble but it isn't just those 'working class' girls who take their clothes off.

MN is the gift that keeps on given Hmm

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 09/10/2020 18:13

I speak from experience.
I don't have a problem with sex workers or exotic dancers.
And we all take our clothes off.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 09/10/2020 18:16

Being working class or a stripper isn't an offense to me. I'm fine with both.

Beks1 · 09/10/2020 18:29

It seems like something mumsnetters like to say when they just don't like a name, that or they say it's a chavvy name

Peakypolly · 09/10/2020 18:42

The only stripper I know personally is called Jennifer.
My DS has a friend called Storm, she hates her name because she says it sounds like the name of a sex worker. I like it.

FeminismIsForALLWomen · 09/10/2020 19:19

& so do you @SeanCailleach Smile

My DS has a friend called Storm, she hates her name because she says it sounds like the name of a sex worker. I like it.

I think if she'd ever met a few sex workers she wouldn't mind so much because honestly I've never met a more compassionate, thoughtful and caring community. Sex workers, on the whole, are completely awesome.

Unfortunately, despite this, the amount of stigma, negative assumptions and abuse heaped on sex workers is ridiculous, so much so that even having a 'stripper name' is frowned upon. Every person who makes assumptions about sex workers is responsible for contributing to this.
