@NiceGerbil

TBF I grew up at the tail end of the cold war and i didn't know that was the name of the plane. We weren't taught it in school and I think I was a little young for the song- I vaguely remember it on TOTP but age 6 in 1980 hearing it was as far as it went.

I don't think it's fair to say it's weird people don't know the name of the plane.

But once you know, it's a name you won't forget.

'Remember this was an American victory, and for many was what ended the war. It's not universally seen as an atrocity'

Well wow. You do you.

Dropping a nuclear weapon under any circs is a massive fucking atrocity. It's just. A different thing entirely. Due to the power, scale, and long lasting effects of radiation.

Excuse me? As I've said earlier, I have taught this in schools. It's not my place to make my strong anti-war feelings known to children. I present as much of the facts as I can and also teach them the critical thinking to interpret them. I use quotes from one of the bombers saying it was the right thing to do, which was his opinion. I use accounts from survivors in Hiroshima. There is nothing wrong with this approach. "You do you" makes you sound like a teenager btw.

@Gigglr

Not Nola either as it's what people call New Orleans. She would be forever asked by any Americans why she was named after the city
Haha! I wouldn't call that a reason not to name a child Nola.
anxietrist · 28/09/2020 07:29

This thread is funny, I don't think I've ever seen such a definitive no. Hope the OP comes back!

cushioncovers · 28/09/2020 07:36

Never heard of Ebola Gay had to go and google it. I'm 50.

Everyday's a school day 🤷🏻‍♀️

bellinisurge · 28/09/2020 07:41

If it's a boy you could call it Adolf. I mean, that was aasages ago. Who cares?
Or ffs, listen to what people are telling you.

Howmanysleepsnow · 28/09/2020 07:54

No way. Enola Gay. If she ever Google’s her name there’ll be 2 hits: Enola Holmes and Enola Gay.
Plus Alone backwards isn’t good.
What about Nola, Lola, Leona?

Theradioison · 28/09/2020 09:11

Wasn't Enola Gay's bomb called Little Boy?

sashh · 28/09/2020 09:13

Wasn't Enola Gay's bomb called Little Boy?

Yes, and the other one was Fat Man

Theradioison · 28/09/2020 09:18

It's such a beautiful track

Apologies it is 8.15 not 6.15. I'm assuming that that's the time the bomb was dropped 😔

AlexaShutUp · 28/09/2020 09:31

Do you also present quotes from the Nazis about why they thought Auschwitz was the right thing to do?

I'm all for teaching critical thinking, but it's very sad if all moral standards are set aside. Some things are just wrong.

Enko · 28/09/2020 09:32

For me it is the alone backwards that puts me off that seems so sad

NiceGerbil · 28/09/2020 10:16

Fucking hell at recognising the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki just being one a number of atrocities in the 20th century and arguably the right thing to do. And noting it as a singularly shocking action is a 'strong anti war message'.

From a person who teaches history in schools.

Well, fucking hell. And if that makes me sound like a teenager I don't care. Rather sound like a teenager than a. Well, I'll leave it there.

NiceGerbil · 28/09/2020 10:18

Are our teachers really saying to our children, arguably dropping nukes was the right thing and no big deal next to other stuff that went on?

I can't get my head round that at all.

mintich · 28/09/2020 10:19

I sang Enola Gay to myself straight away!

NiceGerbil · 28/09/2020 10:21

Well quite, Alexa.

Onceuponatimethen · 28/09/2020 10:49

Surely the bombing was a terrible atrocity with huge civilian loss of life? Sad

SoupDragon · 28/09/2020 10:59

My reaction on seeing the thread title was "fuck no!"

I also sung the OMD song to myself.

shesellsseashells99 · 28/09/2020 11:00

Sorry, first thought Ebola

Bwlch · 28/09/2020 11:01

Surely the bombing was a terrible atrocity with huge civilian loss of life?

There was a huge loss of life but not everybody would agree that it was an atrocity.

BalloonRide · 28/09/2020 11:06

80k people died instantly with thousands literally vanishing leaving only shadows due to the heat of the bomb. 200k died in the next few days. Thousands were left with skin literally melted off. Millions died over the subsequent decades with various cancers caused by the bomb, including unborn babies developing leukaemia in the womb.

But according to @Bwlch it wasnt an atrocity.

NiceGerbil · 28/09/2020 11:07

Good lord.

Sure some people might not believe that nuking civilians is an atrocity.

People believe a lot of things. Doesn't mean they aren't talking bollocks though.

Spidey66 · 28/09/2020 11:09

Enola Gay here too.

I'm in my 50s and an OMD fan in the 80s. The song made me aware of the history.

I wouldn't use the name tbh

FenellaMaxwell · 28/09/2020 11:11

Alone
Ebola
The Enola Gay

Definite no for me.

AlexaShutUp · 28/09/2020 11:18

There was a huge loss of life but not everybody would agree that it was an atrocity.

Having been to Hiroshima twice, and having actually spoken to one of the survivors about his experiences, I find it very, very difficult to understand how anyone could argue that this was not an atrocity. I can only assume that this comes from a place of ignorance about what happened.
