me and DH watched Enola Holmes recently with his nieces and would love the same name for DD. We do thinks it's a little different though! Any thoughts??

OP posts:

I'm shocked that people have not heard of Enola Gay.

And I'm laughing at the useless Helga/Dublin bombing comparison, as if the first atomic bomb is in anyway equivalent! (and I'm Irish!)

Don't use the name OP, it would be an affliction on the poor child.

canigohomenow · 27/09/2020 23:12

It's a lovely name but unfortunately, the connotations make it not so.

It's like Isis, nice name but you just wouldn't.

A plane called Enola obliterated the lives of millions - I'm usually one for always saying if you like it go with it, but in this case... keep looking OP.

On a side note, I watched the film yesterday and it was fantastic!

NiceGerbil · 27/09/2020 23:16

TBF I grew up at the tail end of the cold war and i didn't know that was the name of the plane. We weren't taught it in school and I think I was a little young for the song- I vaguely remember it on TOTP but age 6 in 1980 hearing it was as far as it went.

I don't think it's fair to say it's weird people don't know the name of the plane.

But once you know, it's a name you won't forget.

'Remember this was an American victory, and for many was what ended the war. It's not universally seen as an atrocity'

Well wow. You do you.

Dropping a nuclear weapon under any circs is a massive fucking atrocity. It's just. A different thing entirely. Due to the power, scale, and long lasting effects of radiation.

I remember the lyrics like it was yesterday. I'm singing it's 6:15 though not 8.15, am I wrong?

Gigglr · 27/09/2020 23:34

Not Nola either as it's what people call New Orleans. She would be forever asked by any Americans why she was named after the city

CandyLeBonBon · 27/09/2020 23:35

Bloody loved that tune. My favourite Omd track.

lunalulu · 27/09/2020 23:49

Makes me think of Ebola sorry

CorianderLord · 27/09/2020 23:56

Why would you name your child Alone?

CorianderLord · 27/09/2020 23:58

Although I'm 25 and have never heard Ebola Gay either

CorianderLord · 28/09/2020 00:04

@AltogetherAndrews

I did history to A-Level and Enola Gay is not taught in schools anymore. The war is but japan is a strangely empty gap not much discussed. The name of the plane certainly isn't taught.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/09/2020 00:08

Sorry, can't get past Ebola.

anola?

SenorFrog · 28/09/2020 00:14

I've just asked ds who is 19 and he knows what Enola Gay is but he's doing history A Level. I do laugh at young people who dismiss something because their generation don't know much about it, like the child won't share the world with their grandparents generation; I know what connotations Enola has and I'll be around for another 40 or so years. One thing is for certain, any child born now called Enola, they absolutely will be told of the link and will also be bloody sick of that song by the time they're an adult.

MercyBodle · 28/09/2020 00:50

I don't like it. Alone backwards? A good backwards name like Nevaeh. If you like those sounds there are a lot of much better options: Elora, Eleanora, Leonora, Eleanor, Ena.

Enrosadira · 28/09/2020 01:09

“TomNookTheHustler

I thought everyone had heard of Enola Gay.

The first plane to drop an atomic bomb.

Fucking hell, no wonder Brexit played out like it did, people don't know ANYTHING”

This a million times over

I am also surprised at how many people fear of the word alone.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 28/09/2020 01:14

I really like it, but personally think it's unusable. If an already uncommon name becomes synonymous with tragedy then it's impossible to get past.

Use of the name Myra for a baby went extinct after the 60s.
Isis was on my shortlist in 2000. I'm now very glad I had a boy - imagine travelling or booking flights with the name now.

See also, Adolf.

blueshoes · 28/09/2020 01:20

Please no. Your child will forever be associated with an atrocity and crime against humanity.

So because it wasnt taught to you, it isnt taught anywhere?

You are aware that there are other schools, right?

VanGoghsDog · 28/09/2020 01:31

@Bwlch

I’m 27, know about Hiroshima etc but never heard of the name of the plane. It is not something taught in schools now.

Was it ever?

No, we only know the name because of the song. We don't know the names of other planes!
Seagrassorchid · 28/09/2020 02:54

Awww, I instantly reread it as Ebola.

lovelilies · 28/09/2020 03:18

I know of an Enola

sashh · 28/09/2020 03:40

No child is going to associate that name with a plane.

I think WWII is on the curriculum.

I’m 27, know about Hiroshima etc but never heard of the name of the plane. It is not something taught in schools now.

Bockscar dropped fat man. Both planes are in museums. We don't know what travel will be like in the future so we don't know if this little girl will travel and see her namesake or visit the site of destruction.

But then I know a Lenore - born about 2 years before the fabric conditioner came out.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/09/2020 04:16

I was going to say I really like it, and my first thought was Enola Gay. But I didn't realise that was the Hiroshima bomb plane Blush. I thought it was an old actress or something BlushBlushBlush
I'm 36 and studied history for GCSE, but we didn't learn that!

And to the PPs who ask if people don't google/learn things outside of school, of course we do. That's just not something I've ever looked up! It doesn't mean I stopped learning when I left school.

luckystarmaking · 28/09/2020 04:20

How fucking sad do you have to be to bully someone for their name?

It's not kids who re the bullies, its adults who should know better.

sunyla · 28/09/2020 05:10

As others said, it sounds like Ebola. Also, as I'm sure you're aware from watching the movie, Enola is Alone backwards.

Sorry, but I do hope you find another name that you both love. Smile

CountFosco · 28/09/2020 05:17

Well I'm 50, spend lots of time watching history programmes (got annoyed at the programme about Persia when the presenter said Darius had been forgotten about because everyone knows the stories about Darius in Herodotus) and read history books for pleasure but I did not know the name of the plane. Did know the name of the bomb though. I don't really think the name of either is actually important, what is important historically is the reasons for the build up to and the consequences of the bombing. But I agree that using an unusual name with such a negative association for a lot of people is not a good idea. But most importantly I don't think being rude to other people for not knowing an unimportant fact about a major event is very nice.
