me and DH watched Enola Holmes recently with his nieces and would love the same name for DD. We do thinks it's a little different though! Any thoughts??

@hollyandkit

Absolute BANGER of a tune on the plus side.
Too right!
ittooshallpass · 27/09/2020 22:28

As the 75th anniversary of the bombs being dropped on Japan only happened last month, I am agog that people haven't heard of Enola Gay. OP, please don't give you baby this name. It's akin to using Adolf or Stalin.

MrsAvocet · 27/09/2020 22:31

I think it would be a nice name were it not for the association with Hiroshima, but that will always be there now. I'm surprised so many people are unaware. There may be less young people who know the name than older ones but it I certainly don't think it is an obscure, rarely known fact. I just tested my theory by asking my 2 sons (15 and 17) if they could name the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb and they both could without any difficulty so there are probably always going to be at least some people around who instantly make the association.
I think it is more of an issue because Enola is an unusual name. If the plane had been called, say, Jane or Elizabeth I don't think people would make the connection in the same way as there are multitudes of other associations with those names. But Enola Gay must be the most famous usage of that name in history, and probably the only Enola a large number of people will ever have come across.
It is a shame, because I think it is quite a nice sounding name, but personally I wouldn't want my child to have a name with that association.

Pringlemonster · 27/09/2020 22:33

Oh no
Is it catching ,poor dd 😰

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 27/09/2020 22:34

@RunningFromInsanity

The history around the first nuclear strike isn’t going to go away well it clearly has as the younger members on here hasn’t heard of it...
I'm 32 and would be very surprised to learn that any of my friends were unaware of the Hiroshima bombing.

I agree the name sounds lovely OP but I wouldn't use it.

Handsnotwands · 27/09/2020 22:36

The I’m 25 it’s not my generation line is really disturbing. It happened in 1945. Long before 40,50 even 60 year olds were even born. You can’t shrug and say I’m 25 it’s not something i’d know about. Not knowing about this kind of thing us allows a society to sleepwalk in the wrong direction, a bit like what’s happening right now. Lest we forget etc

Anyway, I digress. But no, it’s not a good association

TillyTheTiger · 27/09/2020 22:36

Like most, my first thought was Enola Gay, my second was the Ebola virus.

Nola, Nuala, Lola, Eleanor, Magnolia - any of these would be better.

Itsokthanks · 27/09/2020 22:36

No, it just makes me think of Ebola.

MrsMcMuffins · 27/09/2020 22:37

Lol at naming a baby Covida😂🤣

Zoflorabore · 27/09/2020 22:39

This is a horrible name for a baby and several negative connotations.

The only benefit is your child will most definitely be the only one in the class/schoolcity with the name.

emilybrontescorsett · 27/09/2020 22:40

I've got the song in my head now.

Theradioison · 27/09/2020 22:43

generational thing? The dropping of the first ever atomic bomb is a bit more than that.

Shocking that people in their 30's haven't heard of Enola Gay. I'm in my 50's and it didn't happen in my lifetime either, it's no excuse

Theradioison · 27/09/2020 22:45

It was an extraordinarily song too, haunting

tenlittlecygnets · 27/09/2020 22:46

Enola Gay? No. Google it.

Prettybluepigeons · 27/09/2020 22:46

Enola gay

You just can't!!!

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 27/09/2020 22:47

Grim.

theconstantinoplegardener · 27/09/2020 22:47

How about Iola OP? It has a similar sound and vibe, but doesn't have the same negative connotations.

Ifonlyicouldliveinmypjs · 27/09/2020 22:49

Absolutely not - it’s not a bad name and I quite like the Anola suggestion but the connection to Enola Gay will undoubtedly be made if you spell it with an E.

For everyone saying it’s not something taught in school, I assure you that it absolutely is. Im a history teacher and have taught the dropping of the atom bomb to hundreds, if not thousands of teenagers over the last 15 years as part of the year 9 curriculum. In my experience it is one of those topics which students are fascinated by and remember the details about. The name of the plane was always something that came up in the teaching and I would be surprised if the majority of the students I taught, didn’t recognise the name if they heard it - even if they forgot 90% of the other stuff I taught them!!

Bobbiepin · 27/09/2020 22:50

Maybe Eniola? More well known, no Hiroshima association but not too commonly used.

Shelby30 · 27/09/2020 22:52

No! I though it said Ebola too.

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/09/2020 22:54

THe lyrics are so haunting..

Enola Gay, you should have stayed at home yesterday
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and you're coming home

These games you play, they're gonna end in more than tears someday
Uh huh Enola Gay, it shouldn't ever have to end this way

It's 8:15, that's the time that it's always been
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and you're coming home

Enola Gay, is mother proud of little boy today
Uh huh, this kiss you give, it's never ever gonna fade away

WhenAWrenVisits · 27/09/2020 22:57

No. I rarely feel this strongly about a name. Please don’t use it.

How about Nola?

snidgetowl · 27/09/2020 23:01

I'm 27 and I was definitely taught the name of the plane at school when studying history GCSE. I can't hear the name without thinking about it, so would have to give it a no based on that.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/09/2020 23:01

@BikeRunSki

I was just watching the film with dd and was thinking it was a rather nice name. Fantastic character too, but the Hiroshima connection is not great.
That's what I thought.

Hiroshima was the first thing that came into my mind when I saw the film title.

catsvdogs · 27/09/2020 23:01

I like it.
