Which name do you prefer for a girl?

Hi,

We are currently struggling to agree on a name for our baby girl who is due in 9 weeks.

We know we want a rare name as our son already has this and do seem to prefer 2 syllable names.

Between both our lists these are the names we have so far:

Marcie
Orla
Minnie
Nelly

Be great to get your opinions on these or also your ideas too as the only one we currently kind of agree on is Marcie.

Thanks!

Marcie is like nails down a blackboard sorry. Hate it. Also Marnie - just as bad.

Nelly is a bit silly.

Orla is ok. Not unusual at all.

Like Minnie as a short form for Minerva. But, it's a slang for vulva.

I wouldn't really want any of them!

Eleanor or Penelope with Nell for short?

What about Nancy instead of Nelly? Same feel, but a bit more of a proper name? - and lovely.

Marcie is like nails down a blackboard sorry. Hate it. Also Marnie - just as bad.

This is exactly how I feel about both of those names. Marcie must be a real “marmite” name for lots of us, I just hate the way it sounds and looks.

Orla is ok though.

Tavannach · 08/09/2020 01:38

Marcie is lovely, although I'd spell it Marcey.

Absolutely loathe, hate and abominate Nellie. Or Nelly.

Nancy is nice.

Notapheasantplucker · 08/09/2020 01:42

I like Marcie. Orla reminds me of a girl in school who constantly had nits.

Astronica · 08/09/2020 03:41

Nelly is my favourite of those.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 08/09/2020 04:21

Orla or Marcie.

Minnie slang name for vagina.
Nelly sorry but it's awful. Poor child would get called Smelly Nelly or Nelly the Elephant.

Torvean32 · 08/09/2020 04:26

I agree with others Minnie will get Minnie mouse and Nelly the elephant.
As someone who has a name used in a nursery rhyme i can tell you it gets really frustrating.

Orla is my favourite on your last.

Buntyjones · 08/09/2020 04:29

Orla is lovely!

Marcie is the name of the creepy little girl in the film 'a beautiful mind' with Russell Crowe, and (spoiler alert!) she turns out to be a schizophrenic hallucination! I couldn't get that out of my head!

What about Ishbel? It's the Gaelic version of Isobel. Or Aoife (pronounced 'Ee-fer')?

Flappingflamingo · 08/09/2020 12:06

Really like orla and I like nelly but not the other two but don't think any are particularly rare.
I wouldn't go with missy as someone suggested, my friend loves this name but as I pointed out to her if she were to get called by her full name or post it would say miss missy which is just daft

pinkpinecone · 08/09/2020 17:52

Orla

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/09/2020 18:30

Marcie

sibbys · 08/09/2020 18:31

I love Minnie but people say it's slang for vagina

Eatyourbanana · 09/09/2020 20:06

Orla. All the others are a bit tacky, IMO - sorry.

RuPaula · 10/09/2020 10:33

I have an Orla, so obviously love the name, but PP’s are right - there’s loads about now!

bluemoon2468 · 11/09/2020 19:04

I wouldn't consider Orla a rare name at all - I know 3 born in the last year and I don't even live in Ireland! It's definitely fast becoming the new Isla!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/09/2020 19:10

Orla is nice but I know quite a few, it's very popular.

Minnie, no, just no

Marcie, not my taste. What about Marcia? That feels more complete to me and Marcy could be a nickname.

Nelly, only as a nn, it's not a name in it's own right to me

user1493494961 · 11/09/2020 20:50

Not keen on any of them, although if I had to choose it would be Orla.

Chocolateandcarbs · 11/09/2020 20:52

Love Minnie. Suggestion - Nora?

Readandwalk · 11/09/2020 20:52

Orla. Timeless classic and beautiful assonance.

wineandcatsandlego · 11/09/2020 20:55

I love Marnie or Nancy

FOKKYFC · 11/09/2020 21:00

I can't be doing with Orla. And it's the least rare by far - there are three at my SE England primary.
I actually love Nelly but agree there may be stick.
Minnie is what little girls call their bits. Nope.
Weirdly, although I really dislike Darcy, I quite like Marcy in a 'post-war America' kind of way. But only with a 'y' - 'ie' always looks twee with names that traditionally end with a 'y'.

YummyBelicious · 11/09/2020 21:16

Just as a variation I really like the name Mercy

itsjakeandamy · 11/09/2020 22:48

I actually know a Minnie. And I still think of the slang for a vagina when I see her. I work as a health care professional and lots of people talk about their "minnie" (or "noonoo". Including adults. Very weird).
I dislike Marcy a lot.
Orla is fine. I don't think it's especially pretty but it's ok.
I'm not keen on Nellie but I love Nell. I know 3 or 4 and I think it's a pretty and stylish name. None of them get teased about Nelly the Elephant (admittedly none is overweight either - it might be more of any issue then).

PoodleMoth · 13/09/2020 20:17

Marcie is lovely

Tootletum · 13/09/2020 20:23

What about
Ophelia
Juliet
Sibylle
Isolde
Iphigenie
Octavia
Tatiana
Aurelia
Antonia
