Irrational name dislikes

Flappingflamingo · 21/08/2020 17:47

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

Incidentally, my children’s names are not on this thread. Can I get a Mumsnet Approved sticker for their birth certificates?

StuntPond · 22/08/2020 23:03

In fairness, @Miljea, not possessing a tv, I just googled ‘transvestite names’ and the top link consisted of Avery Goodlay, Anna Bortion, Eggz Benedict etc.

I don't have kids but I'm a massive name nerd and have my future childrens names decided already future husband has no say in it. I'm surprised my girls name hasn't come up, my boys name hasn't either but its a surname name and I see lots of people don't like those. It's also a very unusual one and on the few occasions I've mentioned it to people in real life they've given me this look >Hmm.

I'm definitely not one to judge as I do like some strange ones. I agree don't like double barrelled names, especially -Mae/May/Mai, -Rose, -Rae/Ray/Rai etc.

I don't like nicknames as full names.

But the worst I've ever heard on a real life person is...

Diesel. I heard it at soft play with my nieces and nephew when they called 'everyone to Diesel's party to go to the party room.'

But each to their own Smile. I hope I haven't offended anyone.

I can't believe someone upthread wants to leave mumsnet because of this!

CatRamsey · 22/08/2020 23:14

Ahhh feck, whilst I was writing my essay someone mentioned my girls name! crosses out on bingo list

Is it because you made them up and they are so obscure that no-one would ever guess them?

I used to regularly visit a pregnancy and baby forum when TTC DC1. Two names that stand out that were actually given to children are Eizach and Jaymz. There are no words.

I also know a Jaiimee (girl). I know it's fashionable for these young things to add extra letters to their names (Lilyyy, Chloee etc), but to lumber your child with it!

EggyPegg · 22/08/2020 23:17

No, I'm mistaken. It's Jaymii.

OhhhPeee · 22/08/2020 23:18

EggyPegg how dare you! Just because my children’s names are a string of letters pulled out of the scrabble bag doesn’t mean they’re not valid. Little hshejsn, shwhkelms and zajshx love their names and I get so many compliments on them.

OrientCalffromtheLandofTute · 22/08/2020 23:20

I had a boy in class called Matrix.

I couldn't actually say the name throughout the day, only when doing the register. (Suppressing huge retches.)

When he put his hand up to answer a question I would look at him and say 'Yes?' instead of the name.

It made my skin crawl. Grin

EggyPegg · 22/08/2020 23:22

@OhhhPeee You have a Scrabble bag? Ohhh. So you're from that breed of parent.

In fairness, I don't think anyone is going to argue about Wayne in this day and age. Can you imagine, you're handed this tiny baby and you look it him and say 'hello Wayne'. See also Keith, Malcolm (mentioned upthread) and Clive.
midwifeync · 22/08/2020 23:24

Harriet. Girl at school who I couldn't STAND called Harriet. She never did anything specific to make me dislike her but she was a bit too sickly sweet - she made me feel a sense of doom. She just had one of those faces, I always wanted her to trip up and see her face smash into the ground. Or the car she was travelling in to collide with a concrete wall.

I know that sounds really awful and intense but, there was something about her that didn't feel 'right'. I feel like even know I'll read in the paper or hear through mutual friends that she's been found out to have done something awful.

I sound batshit! I'm normal in most other ways, promise!

CharismaticVic · 22/08/2020 23:31

@whiskeysourpuss

I'm only 2 out of 3 on my bingo card so far (I'd probably keel over if DS's name was mentioned though as it's fairly unusual). Both DD's names feature on every one of these threads & DD2's is a bit marmite whenever it's mentioned with some loving it as a classic & others describing it as a bit wet.

My irrational name dislikes are Erin - just ugly sounding & Max - a dogs name.

Other than that I'm not much fussed there's loads of names I wouldn't use but I don't get that "oh that's horrible" when I hear them.

Erin and Max are much better than Jaxon, Harper, and the like though.
TH22 · 22/08/2020 23:34

@SaintofBats

George. Such a rotund, puddingy sort of name.
🤣
Jelly4444 · 22/08/2020 23:36

Eleven pages in and none of my children's names have been listed! Hurray! Grin

Although, my dogs name has been mentioned... repeatedly Angry

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 22/08/2020 23:47

Bam! Got DH's name on here now, but still haven't seen DS's! Strange, as I know Mumsnet loves to hate it! So mine and DH done, DS and DCat to go!

Littlepond · 22/08/2020 23:48

Carl. I find it so hard to say. Like I don’t want to overpronounce the R cos then it sounds like Carol. It ends up sounding like Cahl (like dahl) but not quite.
And I have a habit of putting a ie sound on the end of people’s names (oh yes, hateful I know) so Cahl becomes Carly...

I don’t know how to form Carl’s name in my mouth. I hope I never meet another one.

whiskeysourpuss · 22/08/2020 23:50

Erin and Max are much better than Jaxon, Harper, and the like though.

The thread is about irrational dislike of names, those are mine it's nothing to with a type of name - I'd have Jackson (I'm more likely to be offended by made up/incorrect spelling of names than a name itself) & Harper over Erin & Max if I had to choose.

@CatRamsey I knew someone with a Diesel - her other DS was Cole! Wonder which fuel she named the next one after.

Bouncingbelle · 23/08/2020 00:17

I love Rowan for a girl, not Roman!

Fucking Tyler and ANYTHING "Rae" or "Mae"

Lozz22 · 23/08/2020 00:22

Elliana. I know someone who named their kid this. Sounds ridiculous and I just keep thinking smellyana instead.
