Irrational name dislikes

Flappingflamingo · 21/08/2020 17:47

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

Frilly names like Benedict. Bleurgh!

JMG1234 · 24/08/2020 10:52

That's made me laugh. Definitely too pointy and, in the case of Keith, too anorak-y.

Spudlet · 24/08/2020 10:53

@Wolfgirrl I’ll just be weeping into my fat, stupid pudding over here Grin

Off to inform the dog that he’s actually an angry chef with a handlebar moustache, as opposed to a cocker spaniel as he always thought. Then I’m going to sue Mumsnet for the therapy he will need to get over the identity crisis this will doubtless precipitate Grin

It's perfectly normal to have name likes and dislikes, I think we should be free to express that. However when the comment is particularly bitter you can't help but wonder if the commenter is doing ok. It reads as though there is a personal connection to the name.

There are tonnes of ugly people who are wearers of beautiful names. Try not to lose sight of that. Daffodil

names being a gateway to a better CV is a thing of the past

Why? Because they are hidden?

@EggyPegg Laszlo is my guilty pleasure. I am DEVUHSTEHTEHD.

Uh oh. DS' middle name has made it on here. His is a long name given with a NN used daily too, but that was basically to avoid the issue of him feeling like he didn't want to put it on job apps or whatever. He's got the long version for that. Oddly one of my brothers calls him by his full name despite him preferring the NN and everyone else using that, he may be trying to make a point.

Ethel, Edith, Pru, Maud, Barry, Bart, Pixie, Keisha

Personally would not feel right commenting on these threads. It feels too unkind, which is funny as someone mentioned they had never met a person with my name who is kind...anyway my whole family are on here!!

Darcy86 · 24/08/2020 21:38

A friend of a friend has a little boy called Kaiser. I think it's the worst name I've ever heard. So harsh sounding.

Also know another little boy called Rocco. It's not a horrible sound per se but I just can't take it seriously as a name someone has to have for the rest of their life!

Not a huge fan of what I perceive to be 'cutesy' names like Maisie, Archie.

However, George is my absolute favourite name for a boy! Puddingy schmuddingy!! Grin

Inching · 24/08/2020 22:48

@Darcy86, in fairness, I think I’d be more freaked out by someone naming their child Emperor than by what it sounds like!

...but you have commented. WELCOME TO THE PARTY! Once you're off your high horse we'll use it as a piñata!

Start calling him Wilhelm as a NN 😂 (but don't really because it isn't his fault his parents were prats about his name)
EugenesAxe · 25/08/2020 00:36

Beau, Auggie, Albie.

Quite a few on here I like though!

theruffles · 25/08/2020 09:28

Names that end in -ie, e.g. Reggie, Freddie, Maisie, Albie.

Double-barrelled names, e.g. Bella-Rose, Lily-May.

Names like Freya, Isla, Amelia, Orla. Some names that end in -a are pretty but a lot feel a bit too overused for me.

I don't like many boy names but I don't like ones that sounds quite American, e.g. Hunter, Mason, Brayden, Kayden, Kaiden, etc.

I like a lot of old fashioned, old lady type names which I'm sure will appear on this thread somewhere, but each to their own!

Wolfgirrl · 25/08/2020 09:34

Kaiser? The sound of it would be the least of my worries. Doesnt it have connotations?

missmouse101 · 25/08/2020 09:41

Names ending in 'ah' always sound unfinished and as if they're making a meal out of a perfectly normal word. I imagine after saying them, you're standing there with your gob hanging open. For example, Deliah, Rebekkah.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 25/08/2020 09:45

This will always be the black sheep of family cousin of mine

BiBabbles · 25/08/2020 09:51

Oddly, I'm fine with Jamie (in all it's spellings), but strongly dislike James for no reason I'm aware of. Same instant nope with Thomas and all it's variants.

Most others are person associations, many nasty family members like Alice and Alison. I've had to smile and nod a few times over these last few years as Alice has become more popular.

whatausername · 25/08/2020 11:32

I don't think so? Other than the Kaiser Sorzy (sp?) character in a film the only other well-known kaiser is Kaiser Wilhelm II. He was the head of state for Germany at the outbreak of WWI, a messy war that - unlike WWII - can't be blamed on any one person or one country. Kaiser is merely a royal title.

It makes a shit name though.

Flappingflamingo · 25/08/2020 11:34

OK, so far, son's first and middle name, daughter number 1's first and middle name and husbands first name have all been mentioned. My first name has but a different spelling, does that count? So far only daughter number 2 has remained completely unscathed and mine and husbands middle names!! 😂 😂 😂

I knew a dog called Kaiser.

Thought of another. Someone I knew considered calling their DD Queenie. She was the last person I expected to come out with that name, my head nearly fell off.
