Irrational name dislikes

Flappingflamingo · 21/08/2020 17:47

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

@OhhhPeee

EggyPegg YES! Love it!

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfthigh whilst I’m cyber bullying you, have you considered a change of user name yourself? Only I’ve had a few glasses of wine and typing out your username for this post has taken me 20 minutes. Maybe PeggyAndProud?

Oh, great. So first you lot come for my grandmother's name, and now it's mine.

I have no idea why MNHQ are letting this thread stand. It's so upsetting.

MsTSwift · 23/08/2020 06:10

Why on earth would you be upset because someone has a different taste in names to you? How do you get through life?!

MsTSwift · 23/08/2020 06:11

I love the name Peggy if that helps.

CarlottaValdez · 23/08/2020 06:16

My name and DS’s name are on this thread! And nearly all of his class (nice primary in leafy suburbia).

I actually agree about my own name but I think it’s partly a low self esteem thing. I went through a phase where I’d physically cringe if I heard someone mention my name even referencing someone else, it sort of reminded me of myself.

Erin - too close to urine.
Reggie - it's rat food.
Arthur - a balloon shaped name.
Rebekah - sounds like a dry cough.
Nathaniel - it's whiny.
Danielle - another pudgy, podgy, balloon shaped name.
Archie - sounds criminal. Eastenders probably to blame.
Harrison - totally uncontrollable.
Sebastian - Coe. No. Just no.
Oliver - an unmitigated disaster.
Olivia - a genital itch.
Troy - parents never studied Greek lit.
Lydia - saucepan name.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfthigh · 23/08/2020 07:45

@MsTSwift

I love the name Peggy if that helps.
It does. A bit.
MsTSwift · 23/08/2020 07:54

I got told on here that my second child’s name sounded like a boat 😁

BikeRunSki · 23/08/2020 07:59

Lydia - saucepan name.

Eh?

Planterpots · 23/08/2020 08:05

Adam
James
Joseph
David
Oliver
I find these so dull. Although clearly millions like them, in case anyone is offended

Theo when pronounced Feo (I met one the other day)

I used to really dislike Sebastian until I met a baby one and now I just associate it with him (cute)
Harriet
Grace
Ottilie

Molly
Daisy
Lucy
Francesca
Florence

Jack
Wilfred
Anthony
Daniel
Mark
Cory/Corey

Liam, Adam and Rebecca. Liam and Adam are such wet names, to my mind that is and Rebecca is just too much like Ready Brek.

missmouse101 · 23/08/2020 09:19

@MsTswift, ooh, I want to know, is it Cassandra?

EggyPegg · 23/08/2020 09:27

@MsTSwift

It's Baby McBabyface isn't it?

paintedpanda · 23/08/2020 09:27

I have a list as long as my arm of names that I really dislike, but the one that bothers me the most is Nevaeh. Even though it is made up, I have seen people spell it wrong (Naveah, Neveah etc), so when they come back with "it's heaven spelled backwards", I can't help but think that it's really not...

We have a family member with a VERY unusual name but it's so outing that I can't even bring myself to write it. Think biblical but minor character. I can't say I'm keen on it and just can't help feel sorry for him when he grows up.

whatausername · 23/08/2020 10:21

Bodhi & Cohen - they both have meaning within their respective religion and it's ignorant or rude to use them. One of the practising Buddhists I know once told me that the way we use his religion for fun and decoration without giving any thought to the sacredness behind things is offensive. The only thing about the conversation that surprised me was the way he spoke. He is normally the most chilled out guy and avoids speaking negatively as much as he can.

Alright, that's not really irrational so it doesn't fit the theme of the thread.

Flappingflamingo · 23/08/2020 10:55

Oooh and now my husband's 'sunday/naughty' name has been said!!! 😂 😂 😂 😂

OP posts:
SacreBleeurgh · 23/08/2020 11:08

DD1’s name has been mentioned at least 5 times, and I’ve only read a few pages 😂. It is however usually also mentioned on the threads asking for names for strong/non-twee/non-cutesy girl names too so I’ll settle for that!

The only one I can think of that I irrationally dislike is Fay / Faye. It just sounds so... fey. And a bit like the noise you might make if you had a bit of angora fluff stuck to your lips

@unoeufisunoeuf1 wins the prize for the best justification for dislike of a name though 😂😂😂

Crylittlesister · 23/08/2020 11:26

There are many names I dislike, all for utterly random reasons. There are a few front runners though:
Bella (Ella is pretty, add a letter, wreck a name)
Freya. Too close to fray. And then it becomes a pie.
Erin. Too final.
Poppy. I had a horrid middle aged man landlord known as Poppy.
Cameron/callum/connor. Never met a nice one.
Surname names. Grayson is the worst at the mo, I just think Larry.

Alfie is always said in my head in the style of Cilla singing it.
Evelyn. It is the name of an elderly aunt, not a baby name.
George is totally puddingy.

EggyPegg · 23/08/2020 11:51

I blame the nursery rhyme for the dislike of George.

StuntPond · 23/08/2020 12:15

I blame the nursery rhyme for the dislike of George.

I think it's more the royal angle the Hanoverians were either banal or disastrous, and the 20thc King Georges pretty meh and the George Bushes, and it's such an unpleasant, lip-smacking kind of sound. Makes me think of gorging etc. And yes, puddingy-ness.

DuaneBenziesvoice · 23/08/2020 12:26

I have an irrational dislike for certain spellings, so I don't mind Amy but I don't like Aimee. Rebecca is ok but I don't like Rebekah.

The two names I really can't stand are Callum and Reece/Rhys. Awful.

And I don't like Graham or Martin because I've never met a nice one.

MikeUniformMike · 23/08/2020 12:42

@DuaneBenziesvoice, Rhys is pronounced quite differently in Welsh, and is a very nice name.
Rhys pronounced Reece is awful.

Dylan is another name that sounds quite different in Welsh. It's an old name now but was very popular in the mid-20th Century. Sounds horrible anglicised.

MikeUniformMike · 23/08/2020 12:44

It's an old name now but

should have read
It's an old name but now dated and

LynetteScavo · 23/08/2020 12:53

Names are funny things.

Harry is popular, Gary , Larry and Barry aren't- it's only one letter difference.

MIL was telling us how much she lovesthe name Gary at Christmas- we now pretend DH has an imaginary brother called Gary. lockdown was obviously dull for us
