Irrational name dislikes

Flappingflamingo · 21/08/2020 17:47

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

@Letmegetthisrightasawoman

Henry - I always picture an angry chef with a handlebar moustache.

Arthur

That is a very specific connotation of a Henry 😂

I'm also still lmao at cake tin, @ValkyrieCain .

I'm only 2 out of 3 on my bingo card so far (I'd probably keel over if DS's name was mentioned though as it's fairly unusual). Both DD's names feature on every one of these threads & DD2's is a bit marmite whenever it's mentioned with some loving it as a classic & others describing it as a bit wet.

My irrational name dislikes are Erin - just ugly sounding & Max - a dogs name.

Other than that I'm not much fussed there's loads of names I wouldn't use but I don't get that "oh that's horrible" when I hear them.

whatausername · 22/08/2020 20:13

Peggy it's just so...eggy.

My grandmother was called Peggy and so I am now mortally offended. I shall be leaving MN forthwith and calling major newspapers for a sadface photo piece.
OhhhPeee · 22/08/2020 21:32

If I don’t see EggyPeggy as a username on here in the next few days, I’ll be bitterly disappointed.

Sarahbeans · 22/08/2020 21:47

I agree with so many of these.

I personally dislike flower names, or names that end -ly, or -lie. That's for boys and girls. To me, they're just wet sounding.

I also really dislike the old lady / old man names, particularly when they're ugly sounding. So I don't like Arthur or Agatha.

I hate hyphenated first names with a passion and shortened names used in their own right. So I would prefer a Charles to a Charlie and so on. I also hate names with unique spellings. Just don't see the need for it,

Anything with Mai/May

Sil likes and strongly advised us to call a child a longer name so you can shorten it to control the nickname used, ie Benjamin so people can't get it wrong and stick with Ben

Ignored her

ShrimpSymphony · 22/08/2020 22:18

Ezra and Frankie oh and the Mumsnet favourite Ottilie

EggyPegg · 22/08/2020 22:21

@OhhhPeee

I tried. But it was already taken with the Y on the end. I quite like this though and think I'll keep it.

Even though I told you about my late grandmother, Peggy?

This is cyberbullying. I am victimised. Harassed. Targeted.

EggyPegg · 22/08/2020 22:29

So far I've got a full house of first names for me, DH and two DC. Plus middle names for me and one DC. Just DC2 middle name to go (though a short version has popped up, but I'm not counting it).

The comments are hilarious. Particularly the one about my own name.

The DCs names regularly pop up on these threads as 'boring and unimaginative' as well as on the 'timeless and classic' threads. We were going for timeless and classic. Names aren't to everyone's taste and despite going for top 20 names, my two did end up as the only ones in their double intake years at primary school. Though I'm sure secondary will be a different story. They currently love meeting people with the same name. DS1 was one of three in his ski group this year. Another student and one of the instructors. He thought it was brilliant, especially as they were all different nationalities.

EggyPegg · 22/08/2020 22:32

But it was done in solidarity. For all those Peggy's out there! Claiming back the name! I actually really like the name Peggy

DramaAlpaca · 22/08/2020 22:33

I'm not going to list the names I dislike I'd be here all night but I'm very surprised MNHQ have left the thread to stand.

As others have said threads like this usually get deleted very quickly on the grounds of 'not being in the spirit'.

MrsMayo · 22/08/2020 22:39

I loved the name for a girl Sophie/Sophia DH said no as he said it was like Sofa. So.eone o here said they didnt like Charlotte but I love it but my cousin is called this. I love Lottie too.

MrsMayo · 22/08/2020 22:40

Someone

catlovingdoctor · 22/08/2020 22:43

Never been keen on "Connor" for some reason. I can't really explain why. I think the first part sounds very awkward.

OhhhPeee · 22/08/2020 22:48

EggyPegg YES! Love it!

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfthigh whilst I’m cyber bullying you, have you considered a change of user name yourself? Only I’ve had a few glasses of wine and typing out your username for this post has taken me 20 minutes. Maybe PeggyAndProud?

PurBal · 22/08/2020 22:52

Alice

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/08/2020 22:55

Op stop pandering and apologising to bloody snow flakes. You haven’t gave any offence none of us people have chosen to take it. If you/we don’t like a name tough we don’t like and we are allowed to voice an opinion.

Miljea · 22/08/2020 22:57

Me:'Then my own name came up.... 😤 😂 Had to laugh as no one is called that these days; except transvestites in down-market working men's clubs 😂'

Costaroad 'Alas, I don't spend enough time having out (sic) with transvestites in any class of working men's club to know what they're likely to be called!!'

Oh, how disingenuous! 😊

The rest of us have televisions and the internet 😉

And a bit of imagination 😂

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/08/2020 22:57

My name Clare. Could my parents have chosen a more boring name. It doesn’t even lend itself to any nns. I despise it and I’ve never truly forgiven my parents for calling me it.
