Irrational name dislikes

Flappingflamingo · 21/08/2020 17:47

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

Yes, it's quite mad. It confirms my theory that a minority of Mumsnet users simply aren't used to dealing with any form of disagreement in their lives, because they live in some kind of bland echo-chamber of 'You go, hun!!!'

Thos really made me laugh!

@ClinkyMonkey yes there are many English names that people in Ireland cannot pronounce properly.

James becomes 'Jeems'
Lucy and Lily become 'Loo-say' and 'Lee-lay'
Ivy becomes 'Oi-vay'
Paige becomes 'Peege'

Doesnt sound right at all.

Kokeshi123 · 22/08/2020 15:21

Can't believe some attention-seeking Gawd-help-us has reported the thread!

My name and one of my kids' names is here. I thought the comments were hilarious and I think the thread is hilarious too.

It's about peoples' IRRATIONAL dislikes. It's not a case of "If you picked this name for your child you are a stupid uneducated person and your child probably is as well."

missmouse101 · 22/08/2020 15:23

Willa, Wren, Pearl, Elsie, Anna.

Where in god's name do you live, @Wolfgirrl, where people are afflicted with these bizarre mispronunciations?

PlantPotting · 22/08/2020 15:33

I don't mind at all that OP @Flappingflamingo doesn't like my baby daughter's name Rowan. To be fair I don't like it much either anymore. For the reason @MikeUniformMike anticipated, the nursery is full of Roman, Rowan and other derivatives. I regret choosing a trendy name that's so similar to other fast rising trendy names. Never mind. It's just a name. She can change it if she wants when older.

I don't like Colin as it looks like Colon

LynetteScavo · 22/08/2020 15:35

The thing is is everyone liked the same names all first born children would be called the same thing. A bit like in 1972 when almost the only names available were Stephen and Sarah.

Wolfgirrl · 22/08/2020 15:42

@BananaShackles

South West England. That is how I have heard Irish people pronouncing those names!

cantsaynotocake · 22/08/2020 15:51

Not offended that both my kids names are on here. Would be a boring world if we all liked the same things 😊

For me, anything double barrelled I hate, think it's chavvy but each to their own 🤣

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 16:02

Rowan is nice @PlantPotting, but for a boy the other similar names swamp it.

Double-barrelled is just naff. It works in some countries but not others.
The names are usually quite dull and made worse by the hyphen.

Conjoined names are ever worse, and often look unreadable. Jade-Emma, Destiny-Rae, Ellalouise, Jaydaniel or Jayden-Kai are best left off the list.

ValkyrieCain · 22/08/2020 16:07

Caitlin. Cake Tin.
Amelia/Emelia. Sounds like you're drunk.

Yes, both irrational.

shaunamarie · 22/08/2020 16:08

Freya, Dakota, Harper, Stella, Elijah, Ruby, Lucas, Samuel, Isaac, Aaron

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 16:12

I have just thought of a friend with a double barrelled first name.

It isn't his real name but I'll give a similar name as an example.
It is something like Fred-Christopher, and the name tends to get truncated on things like name registers and badges. He never gets called the full name, just the bit before the hyphen.

I don't know how mant times I've apologised or said absolutely not offence was meant. I can't help having these feelings about certain names any more than I can help not liking fish, like I said at the beginning they're irrational. I have 3 children, all with 2 names so out of 6 names, 4 of them have been mentioned, including a different spelling of my own. I am not in the slightest bit upset or offended by it, why would I be? We can't all have the same taste, as long as you love the name that's all that matters. If you get so upset by some strangers saying they don't like a name, god help you out there in the real world. And as for reporting it, why? Nobody is being bullied, been nasty or threatened anyone, I was only wondering if it was me who had strange irrational dislikes to names. By the way, if I met you and you told me your child's name, I would never ever tell you how I really felt about it if I disliked it, THAT would be mean.
Anyway sorry for the rant and my apologies again to those who are angry, upset or offended.

@flappingflamingo it's just chat. I don't think apologies are required. People are completely entitled to be upset about things but as a PP poster said, if this is the first time people realise some won't like their name choices, they're really not engaging with the world. These are just names on virtual paper. Not people.

Mashingthecompost · 22/08/2020 17:22

PP poster 😆 oops.

BalloonSlayer · 22/08/2020 17:39

My pet hates are:

  • negative biblical names showing that you have absolutely no idea of the connotations of the name, eg Saul, Leah, Delilah.
  • names when people haven't even taken the slightest interest in their origin, eg having two sons called William and Liam, or Henry and Harry.
  • assumptions that any name ending with -a or -y must be a girl's name , so girls called Toby, Nikita, Elisha etc
formerbabe · 22/08/2020 17:48

It's so interesting to me how everyone's tastes are so different.

I wonder if we can find one boys name and one girl's name that everyone likes?

Probably not

perfumeistooexpensive · 22/08/2020 17:48

Any names that are really a shortened proper name.

Charlie
Alfie
Albie
Freddy
Tommy
Lottie
Maggie
Debbie
Danny etc.
Give children a full name and shorten it if you want to. I heard of someone named Benny who was in a professional job and so embarrassed when he needed to fill out official forms.

MsTSwift · 22/08/2020 17:52

I couldn’t give 2 hoots if some randomer doesn’t like my name or my kids names! They obviously have hideous taste. 😀

I second this entirely.
