Am I the only one that can't see past this association?

Aria/Arya seems to be going up in popularity and for some reason I just can't see past its negative association. Am I just being overly sensitive or does someone else also struggle with accepting this name?

I have met a few Arias in the past couple of years and it even makes me feel slightly uncomfortable I guess. Of course everyone is entitled to choose whatever name they want for their children and I try not to judge but I can't help it.

I don't know, I might be the crazy one but I sure hope I am not

What negative association?

Laaalaaaa · 15/08/2020 08:22

Only thing i think of with Aria is a Vegas hotel.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 15/08/2020 08:22

As in the association with the Aryan race?

Shantotto · 15/08/2020 08:23

Game of Thrones character I guess? Although one of the better ones I suppose as she didn’t turn out as bad as all those poor kids names Khaleesi or Daenerys!

ILoveStickers · 15/08/2020 08:23

I can only thing of aria, as in a song in an opera, and Arya, as in Game of Thrones.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 15/08/2020 08:23

I can’t see any negative connotation with it. If I really push I guess Aryan race but wouldn’t be something that sprang to mind if I met someone with that name.

Oh given the origins of the name are Indian I’m in no way suggesting that it is linked to the white superiority just trying to guess what the OP is thinking.
Helgathehairy · 15/08/2020 08:26

I’ve got a 7 year old Aria. I can’t think of any negative connotation??

Dinosauraddict · 15/08/2020 08:26

Reminds me of GoT or Eragon...

Ughmaybenot · 15/08/2020 08:27

Talk about half a thread, this is so vague. What connotations?

Lazydaisydaydream · 15/08/2020 08:28

Obviously doesn't have such terrible connotations if no-one else is sure what you are referring to! I'm intrigued?

daisypond · 15/08/2020 08:30

What’s the negative association?
Aria is a musical term. It has a positive association.
Arya is GOT. She’s quite a feisty character. Nothing particularly wrong with her.

GertiMJN · 15/08/2020 08:31

Eh?

I might be the crazy one but I sure hope I am not

You do sound crazy. And why do you hope other people have similarly weird reactions to innocent people because of their name.??

Ginfilledcats · 15/08/2020 08:31

Another one who only knows Arya from GOT. Good strong female character...good name choice.

I think it's pretty without being cutesy

Blownaway1 · 15/08/2020 08:33

No one else seems to know what is negative about this name so think it’s just you op Grin

angelofthelight · 15/08/2020 08:34

Just reminds me of a character from PLL.

TheVanguardSix · 15/08/2020 08:36

It makes me think of an opera aria.
But what are you talking about, OP? Elaborate.

weekendweekday · 15/08/2020 08:37

I actually didn't want to mention it because I didn't want to offend anyone but yes I do mean aryan race.

OP posts:
BeingATwatItsABingThing · 15/08/2020 08:37

I only think of the musical aria but I love Phantom of the Opera and they use it a lot. I’ve never seen GoT (must be one of the only people) so have no connection with that. I also didn’t even think Aryan race until a PP mentioned it.

People have preconceived ideas about most names based on their own experiences. There are very few that bring on a massive negative reaction from the majority of people. Adolf is one of them.

wowfudge · 15/08/2020 08:39

I imagine everyone has a name which has negative connotations for them based on experience. It's a reason for not choosing it for your own child, but it would be odd to think negatively of someone with that name who is unconnected.

Spam88 · 15/08/2020 08:40

Even now you've said aryan race I think it's a stretch...

Lazydaisydaydream · 15/08/2020 08:41

So you didn't want to mention it in case you offended anyone... But were willing to start a whole thread talking about it and pointing out this supposed association to everyone who's never thought about it before? Hmm

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 15/08/2020 08:42

Like I said the name is from Indian origin so it’s not linked to the aryan race. Only in your mind.

Snarkastic · 15/08/2020 08:43

I can't help thinking "Aryan" too OP, I'm genuinely surprised (but glad for the Aryas!) that others don't.

SimonJT · 15/08/2020 08:44

Whats so uncomfortable about a popular Indian name? Its also a popular Hebrew ans Urdu name.

Comparing it to Aryan is, well a bit stupid as they sound completely different. If you genuinely thought a name sound like Aryan was negative you would have started a thread about the name Aronn which sounds more like aryan than Aria does.
