Am I the only one that can't see past this association?

Aria/Arya seems to be going up in popularity and for some reason I just can't see past its negative association. Am I just being overly sensitive or does someone else also struggle with accepting this name?

I have met a few Arias in the past couple of years and it even makes me feel slightly uncomfortable I guess. Of course everyone is entitled to choose whatever name they want for their children and I try not to judge but I can't help it.

I don't know, I might be the crazy one but I sure hope I am not

(If spelt Aria and i saw it written i would think of the musical term though)

daisypond · 15/08/2020 08:45

It’s an Indian boys’ name.

Dededa · 15/08/2020 08:45

The only time I’ve ever made that association was when I saw something on the internet who had called their child Arya and then either the middle or surname began with N and they never considered it until it was written down like that. It would never have occurred to me.

combatbarbie · 15/08/2020 08:46

I assumed its popularity was to do with Pretty Little Liars or GoT

mathanxiety · 15/08/2020 08:46

I always do a double take when I see the name Arya.

It's just so close to Aryan and all that word calls to mind.

The only association I have with Aria is that its a musical term, so it seems an odd choice as a name for me. But there are a few names I feel this about. For example Harper (is a term for a harp player) and Piper (the word for a pipe player). Strikes me as slightly strange that Aria, the term used for a style of singing, is used as a girls name. But I know not everyone will be of the same opinion and thats fine.

Pobblebonk · 15/08/2020 08:47

Not sure what everyone is so confused about, "Arya" at least certainly makes me think of Aryan race. And "Aria" makes me think of either an opera song or a misspelling of "area".

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 15/08/2020 08:48

If you know anything about music, you wouldn't have negative connotations about Aria. Thinking it is some kind of version of the word Aryan would say more about you, really.

Snarkastic · 15/08/2020 08:49

Btw I'm not saying it's "linked" to the word Aryan but reminds me of it, in the same way that e.g. the name Ottillie reminds me of Utterly Butterly. Clearly not linked but associated in my mind.

SerenityNowwwww · 15/08/2020 08:51

Aryan is an old Persian name. It’s only in recent history that the issues with it have arisen. It’s not unpopular in America.

Blownaway1 · 15/08/2020 09:03

Our history teacher pronounced Aryan as a-Ryan. So in my mind it’s nothing like the name Arya.

Pobblebonk · 15/08/2020 09:04

Thinking it is some kind of version of the word Aryan would say more about you, really.

It really doesn't.

weekendweekday · 15/08/2020 09:04

I am actually surprised and genuinely happy that I seem to be one of only a few people that manage to have this negative connotation about the name. In a way I am happy that it's all in my head so yeah that's it. Thanks everyone!

Arya has the same effect on me. Aria though makes me think of the musical term.

FattyBoom · 15/08/2020 09:46

Only association I get is Game of Thrones

Orphlids · 15/08/2020 10:25

Seven years ago when my daughter was a baby, I got chatting to a woman in M&S cafe, whose baby, she told me, was named Aria. It was the first time I’d heard it used as a name, and I got really excited, because my daughter is named after a character from an opera, and I assumed she must be an opera lover too. But she wasn’t. She had no idea it was an operatic term. I’ve never recovered from the disappointment. So yes, the name has negative associations for me. Grin

I can’t imagine there’s much else to dislike about it.

LynetteScavo · 15/08/2020 10:44

I've known a few boys called Aryan, which would probably upset you more, OP. The link below gives an explanation of why it's so popular.

https://ohbabynames.com/all-baby-names/aryan/

SerenityNowwwww · 15/08/2020 10:58

It’s still relatively popular in Iran - it’s originally from there (which would have spread to India and other parts of the ME, fairly common).

A (Iranian) relative did ponder naming their child this in the US and hadn’t made to connection - I mentioned it and they considered it (it hadn’t really occurred to them) and chose something else in the end. Of course it’s not pronounced Air-ee-an.

ThisIsJamHot · 15/08/2020 10:58

Wow this is what pointless virtue signalling looks like! It’s bollocks like this “ooh the name Arya makes me think of “Aryan” and ooh that could be construed as problematic” that means actual everyday racism is dismissed/ignored/eye rolled at OP.

People are still judged negatively because of the colour of their skin- and that is massively problematic, you could try and help tackle that instead of posturing about non issues.

LynetteScavo · 15/08/2020 11:04

With Aria I think of the musical term or Italian for air.

With Aaryah I think elaborate spelling.

SerenityNowwwww · 15/08/2020 11:06

Seems like a genuine question to me.

I know a woman whose name - if pronounced correctly - sounds like one of the worst racial slurs you can say. It only became apparent when she moved to the states and her husband said he was yelling for her across a shopping mall...

ThisIsJamHot · 15/08/2020 11:09

What was the name ?

SerenityNowwwww · 15/08/2020 11:10

Negar - if said in the ‘right’ way...

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/08/2020 11:12

The Aryan race (and this is disputed) were initially from an area in Iran and were thought to have settled in Northern India.

sorryforswearing · 15/08/2020 11:13

Spam88
Even now you've said aryan race I think it's a stretch...

Me too. A massive stretch.
