Am I the only one that can't see past this association?

Aria/Arya seems to be going up in popularity and for some reason I just can't see past its negative association. Am I just being overly sensitive or does someone else also struggle with accepting this name?

I have met a few Arias in the past couple of years and it even makes me feel slightly uncomfortable I guess. Of course everyone is entitled to choose whatever name they want for their children and I try not to judge but I can't help it.

I don't know, I might be the crazy one but I sure hope I am not

@AllPlayedOut

Arya has the same effect on me. Aria though makes me think of the musical term.
This.

That’s what Iranians tell me! It’s not unusual to meet Indians (and Pakistanis) if the older generations who speak Farsi and have Persian names. I freaked a local (elderly, Indian) shopkeeper out a while ago when he was on the phone speaking Farsi and I greeted him in my (very very basic) Farsi. He was very shocked that I knew what he was speaking and that I knew a few words.

Finally enough the first (non Iranian) person to tell me about Persians actually being the Aryans was a German woman I worked with.

I know a couple of Arias/Aryas, one's about 40 years old! I always thought of it as a musical term. Never occurred to me that it was like Aryan

NameChange84 · 15/08/2020 11:19

ARIA? The Italian word for SONG? Confused Why on earth would that have a negative connotation.

Arya - Starke. Game of Thrones. Not the best choice, after a TV show but the character is a good one.

I wouldn’t assume the parents were Nazis.

YewHedge · 15/08/2020 11:19

I just thought of music. Nothing negative came to mind at all.

SerenityNowwwww · 15/08/2020 11:19

I’ve met a few little Evas... I haven’t had any suspicions...

Skyfatlass · 15/08/2020 11:37

Personally you can find something ‘wrong’ with any name, Evie sounds like evil, Lucy sounds like loo seat, Isla looks like Islam etc etc
I can pick apart any name including mine and my kids names but people will end up nameless if we read into every little sound or spelling.

daisychain1620 · 15/08/2020 11:41

It makes me think if a beautiful aria as in musical. I loved this name before it was made more popular by GoT

NameChange84 · 15/08/2020 11:47

Isla looks like Islam

And that’s “wrong” is it?

Did you really mean to write that?

PuppyMonkey · 15/08/2020 11:56

I would bet a million quid that that rise in popularity is down to the GOT character, which is specifically pronounced “Are Ya” if that makes any difference?

SimonJT · 15/08/2020 12:00

Isla looks like Islam

Why is there a problem with that?

Ginfilledcats · 15/08/2020 18:49

I mean they are pronounced totally differently

Arya - ah-ya / ah-ree-a
Aryan - air-ree-an

SerenaSandwich · 15/08/2020 18:52

It's only ever made me think of the musical term.

Aa a PP said, Aryan is pronounced differently anyway.

FinallyRelief · 15/08/2020 18:55

Aarian is an Indian boys name and Aria is a girls name.

Why you ask?

Only in the late 19th early 20th centuries did Aryan become equated with Germanic or Nordic peoples. Prior to this corruption, Aryan referred to an archaic language whose speakers are thought to have spread and influenced languages throughout the Indian subcontinent.

Standrewsschool · 15/08/2020 18:55

I wouldn’t think of aryan when seeing those names.

If you look hard enough, all names have a negative connotation.

Violet - add a N, becomes Violent, or ‘ill scream and scream, until I become sick’ ( Just William)
Aidrian, nn, Aids, ie. AID
George - Georgie Porgie, people used to associate this with being fat
Elsa - Elsa the Lioness
Sabrina - the teenage witch
Richard, nn Dick
William - Willy

mathanxiety · 15/08/2020 23:51

Thinking it is some kind of version of the word Aryan would say more about you, really.

Is that supposed to mean something?

Phbq · 15/08/2020 23:57

Isla looks like Islam

and Christian ^REALLY* looks like Christian 😅

timeisnotaline · 16/08/2020 00:01

Don’t forget peter as it’s very like st Petersburg and they aren’t being very friendly to the western world right now Hmm
I read this year that ftse 350 companies have more CEOs named peter than they have female CEOs so British offices seem a good place to start the make Peter pc campaign.
