Ottilie or Penelope?

Hi all

Dd2 due Dec. We are struggling after using the only 2 names we could agree on with our first

My fav is Ottilie, where I am it's not commonly used, I don't know any but aware its rising. Dh dislikes this name

Penelope (penny) is our 2nd choice but it's more popular and I'm really not one to like top 100 names, but it is a family name which is why we would use it.

Baby due in Dec.

I like feminine and classic names, not too twee old lady or unusual but not top 100

Dh hates girls names basically!!

Thank you :)

I love Ottilie and Penelope

Would your DH like Ottilie more if he used a nickname like Ottie?

Poppydaisies · 18/07/2020 13:06

I like a Ottilie pronounced Ott EEL ee eh.

I hate it pronounced Ottily.

PlantPotting · 18/07/2020 13:07

A suggestion

Margaret nn Maggie or Peggy (similar to Penny)

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 18/07/2020 13:09

Penelope.

daisypond · 18/07/2020 13:11

Penelope. Ottilie is really horrible.

LuckyLinky · 18/07/2020 13:13

Penelope. No one should have to use a name they dislike for their child.

katy1111 · 18/07/2020 13:13

Congratulations Smile
I really like Otillie. Shame your DH doesn't.
If you like classic French-style names that aren't too popular then you might like some of these:

Elodie
Delphine
Romilly
Adeline
Elise
Estelle/Estella

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 13:17

Thanks everyone :)

He doesn't like it because it reminds him of otters..
He liked lily at one point so I suggested her nn could be lily but still no..

I don't want either of us to settle for a name or dislike it so we wouldn't choose anything we both hadn't agreed on

Re suggestions, he vetod both Margaret and Peggy (Peggy is one of our pets) but thank you

Adeline and Elise were on list 1 but after a week or so he didn't like them but I do love those :) the others we know quite a few of, I worked in child care for a while so I'm put off quite a few names sadly!

Emmeline?

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 13:28

Emmeline isn't one either of us like but thanks for the suggestion :)

Ok going to keep trying!! (I like Ottilie though)

Roxanne or Roxanna nn Roxy
Liberty
Pearl
Delilah (too popular?)
Clementine nn Clemmie
Jemima

Enderline · 18/07/2020 13:32

I really strongly dislike Penelope, but Ottilie is quite nice. Have you thought about Tilly for a nickname?

daisypond · 18/07/2020 13:36

Ottilie is one of those names that just baffles me why anyone likes it! I find it hard to see how a final choice comes down to two such different names with such different images.

LuckyLinky · 18/07/2020 13:43

Matilda?

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 13:45

We have a few of those suggestions in the family, as in young children but things like pearl and Delilah he said no to, thanks for suggesting though!

We had Diana, Juliet and Julia on the list but again he's gone off them lately.

I understand people's opinions, penelope / penny like I said is a family name and that is why we would use it to honour this person and its is basically one of the only names we agree on.. Her middle name being the other but it's middle spot due to being long and potential nn not being ones we like and inevitable at some point..

These aren't our final choices, it's more these so far are the only two on the list, I'm just gathering suggestions and opinions :)

Matilda is lovely! I really like I'd but dh doesn't (honestly I have suggested hundreds to him!!)

Penelope reminds me of strawberries 🍓

It’s a lovely name

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 13:47

It's interesting how there is usually a strong divide between the two! I know they are a bit marmite but aren't most names!?

Whatsyourflava · 18/07/2020 13:48

Get DH to go away and write down 10 or even 20 names he likes (specify to him you'd rather he avoid top 100). Even if you don't like any of the list it might help with progress. He'll also get a better appreciation of how hard it is to think of names

I love Ottilie

user1493494961 · 18/07/2020 13:55

Penelope, but Matilda and Clementine are lovely.

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 13:56

@Whatsyourflava thanks for your suggestion, I did he came back with 3.. 2 we had previously said no to (bad association) so I've told him to come up with 10 total for Monday and hoping that flinging a book at him may help!

From those names they are quite unisex or shortened to unisex, like Samantha etc.

So sadly we didn't get much of an idea!
He doesn't like too popular, too unusual, nature names, whimsical names, too frilly or too old lady... He basically dislikes all names honestly! Haha

I agree on matilda and clementine being lovely too, unfortunately can't use matilda and clementine is another pet so that's been ruled out :(

daisypond · 18/07/2020 14:01

Ottoline is classier to me. Is that any good? And then you won’t get the pronunciation issues with Ottilie.

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 14:04

Ottoline was also on the list but a v firm no from dh but thanks :)

Diana, Julia and Juliet are nice, the first two are particularly fabulous.
