My husband wants to call the new baby after the cat ...

So finally getting DH to start at least thinking about baby names with a couple of weeks to go, and after crossing off the unappealing Cyrus/Aethelstan/Lancelot style names he likes, we finally have a short list.. one of which is the cat’s name Confused

Could people please critique, say which your favourite is, or suggest anything else we might like? We don’t really love any of them... we have a Kitty and a Rafe already and I’d like a name that ‘goes’.

Maxim
Ivo (but would you pronounce it EE-vo or eye-vo?)
Mungo (the cat Blush)
Jonty
Jago (one of ds’s middle name though)

Please help!

I was going to say I know a family that dechristened their cat to give its name to their DD (who is now in her 40s and suffered no long lasting trauma), so nothing inherently wrong with that. But Mungo is a good name for a cat and an awful name for a child, so please leave the cat in peace Grin

Donkeytail · 29/04/2020 21:22

Maxim - Is this not the name of a magazine?
Ivo - Sounds like a drug dealer
Mungo - again sounds rough/ drug dealerish
Jonty - Sounds really feminine/ jaunty. Maybe it is a girls name.
Jago - every time I see it I think it is pronounced yah-go and have to correct myself.

I'm not in the UK though so maybe don't know what names are 'normal' there. You certainly wouldn't get Mungos and Jontys around here!

Orphlids · 29/04/2020 21:23

@BrexpatInSwitzerland, I love the husband too, ha ha! I like his wildly romantic taste in names, and just imagine how much he must love that cat to want to name his son after it! You’re a lucky woman, OP.

madcatladyforever · 29/04/2020 21:24

So long as the cat isn't called tiddles! !!

NamechangeObvis · 29/04/2020 21:26

DH didn’t like the cats name until now I think 😑 I think we’d have to change the cats name if we did go for it. O god he’s sucking me into the insanity...

We have Cornish family but most boys Cornish names I’m not keen on.

No I’m not Carrie! Blee!

I only like traditional boys names
Simon
Richard
John
Paul
Hugo.
They never age.

MillicentMartha · 29/04/2020 21:29

I like Ivo best, pronounced eye-vo. Jonty sounds very posh to my ears, a posh boy in the 1980s. Maxim, pronounced Max eem? Hmm 🤔 not so keen. Jago, is it Cornish? It’s OK, better than Mungo Jerry.

clairethewitch70 · 29/04/2020 21:29

My favorite boys names at the moment, Kemet, Tor & Ptolomy. Are these any good for you?

babynamelover · 29/04/2020 21:36

Thanks for starting my day with this glorious thread 😂. It probably doesn't feel so funny to you though, I was going to suggest Miles/Milo it's our cats name too 😍.
Of your list I like Ivo (eye-vo) the best with your older children.
I like Maxwell as an alternative to Maxim.

Kitty, Rafe &

Walter
Edwin
Oswald
Percy
Peregrine
Phineas
Ambrose
Amos
August/us
Sylvan
Dorian
Frank
Graeme
Leopold
Lucian
Cecil
Cedric
Marcus/Marcellus
Bennett

DamnYankee · 29/04/2020 21:36

Maxim is ok.

From the above lists:
Toby
Jasper
Milo
Luca
Henry

NamechangeObvis · 29/04/2020 21:42

Love Leopoldo too, but it’s DS’s other middle name, after my dad Grin

RoseMartha · 29/04/2020 21:44

Rohan
Monty
Gabe
Sebastian
Jasper

Honeyroar · 29/04/2020 21:48

Wasn’t there a Mary, Mungo and Midge children’s characters in the 70s?

Out of those names, Ivo (eye vo).

liferips · 29/04/2020 21:49

All these names tell me you probably live on a vast estate and your children go to private school in tweed blazer and cap!

In which case Jonty is the best by far.

MKCH · 29/04/2020 21:49

Digby!

Queenest · 29/04/2020 21:53

Yes there was and they lived in a flat and went up in the lift

MilkNoSugars · 29/04/2020 21:54

Maxim is nice but will get shortened to max which is quite dull compared to your other names.

Like Jago and Ivo

How about Rosco/ Roscoe or Otto?

Orphlids · 29/04/2020 21:54

Zebedee? That’s pleasingly bonkers, but usable, I think.

donquixotedelamancha · 29/04/2020 21:54

Themistocles and Leonidas are what my two would have been call if they were boys.

Maxim is ok

FHM was better.

ElectricTonight · 29/04/2020 21:54

Max - just Max is nice.

I'd pronounce Ivo - Eye-Vo

Queenest · 29/04/2020 21:59

I prefer Jago to Mungo (which sounds like a pets name)

I have no idea how to pronounce Ivo but imagine it’s eye-vo.

Alternatives:

Jared
Jedd
Gus
Balonz

AJPTaylor · 29/04/2020 22:09

Seth

Cissyandflora · 29/04/2020 22:12

@Coffeeandroses at the complete risk of outing myself I have to comment- you’ve picked two of my children there! You share my great taste!

pinkpinecone · 29/04/2020 22:14

Mungo is a awful.

Ivo and Jago are the nicest of the bunch

pinkpinecone · 29/04/2020 22:14

Sorry no offence to your cat!
