Innes or Hamish?

Hi everyone.
We have just had a super cute baby boy and we are trying to settle on his name. Our final 2 choices are Innes and Hamish. We have a 1 syllable surname (not going to share in case it is outing) and are Scottish living in Scotland

Any views would be much appreciated!

Defo Innes. Lovely name. Congrats on new baby

SallyWD · 16/03/2020 13:08

Hamish is lovely. I much prefer it to Innes.

MothershipG · 16/03/2020 13:17

I thought Innes was a girl's name, never heard of it for a boy, so I googled and discovered that the girl's name has 1 'n'.

Just mentioning this so you know it may cause some confusion.

Theworldisfullofgs · 16/03/2020 13:20

I also thought Innes was a girls name.

I do love Hamish.

Caramel78 · 16/03/2020 13:21

Love Innes

Bezalelle · 16/03/2020 13:55

Hamish!

My first instinct would be to pronounce Innes as "Inns"

Nonnymum · 16/03/2020 13:58

Love innes but only know it as a girls name.

Ooo interesting split so far....did wonder about the female variant spelling of Innes, but that is similar to the Lindsay or Leslie name situation...i think most people in Scotland would know it is a boy's name....

I was also wondering if Hamish is more preferred by English people, whereas in Scotland, people may think it is too 'try hard' Scottish.

Any more thoughts?

Should have said that people in Scotland would know it as a boy's name.

Hamish is nice.
I'm not a fan of Innes, how about Angus?

LBTM · 16/03/2020 14:09

We're Scottish and in scotland and I love the name Hamish. It was the second choice name for both of our boys but we worried that it was a bit ott Scottish with our surname beginning with "Mc". Still, I reckon of we had a third DS he would end up as Hamish.

RonSwansonsMustacheComb · 16/03/2020 14:11

I'm Scottish and prefer Hamish, but it's also much more popular if that matters to you.

Can I interest you in a Fergus? Grin

And congratulations!

Pentium85 · 16/03/2020 14:12

I love Innes, but I’ve only ever heard it on girls before, so I would have to choose Hamish for a boy

Mmsnet101 · 16/03/2020 14:14

Scot here. I'd deffo know Innes as a boys name, I think you are right that most would.
Hamish has grown on me as its my other halfs name, and he's proper teuchter so suits him. Seems to be more popular for babies now whereas I always thought it an old man name years ago. Sorry not sure if that helps! Calum is another Scottish boy name I love Smile

DelphiniumBlue · 16/03/2020 14:17

Was going to say I'd never heard of Innes for a boy,but Google assures me it is a boys name.
How would you pronounce it? Presumably differently from Ines?

PeskyRooks · 16/03/2020 14:23

Hamish is a great name!

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/03/2020 15:48

Interesting that some people south of the border think Innes is a girls name. Defo known as a boys name up here in Scotland. I don’t think Hamish is a nice name myself - and I am a Scot in Scotland. Each to their own

chipsandpeas · 16/03/2020 15:52

Innes

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/03/2020 15:53

Definitely Hamish! I love that name, every little Hamish I've met has been love, too

Heismyopendoor · 16/03/2020 15:54

Scottish here, I prefer Hamish. My kids all have Scottish names, love them all!

SephrinaX · 16/03/2020 15:55

I'm bias as I have a Hamish of my own!

AudacityOfHope · 16/03/2020 15:57

I'm Scottish and have an Innes. He gets lots of compliments. Scottish people know it's not Ines.

MikeUniformMike · 16/03/2020 16:17

I like both. Know one of each, both adults.
I'd probably choose Innes but it depends on the surname.
I think Innes means Island, so the full name might sound like a place name.

EverythingChanges321 · 16/03/2020 16:19

Reminds me of Big Innes in Still Game. Fab name.

Peachbubble · 16/03/2020 16:36

Hamish, one of my favourite names
