This was my great grandma's name who I had a lovely relationship with when I was little, so the name has always had a special place in my heart. Always thought that one day I'd consider it when I had a baby, and it was so, so rare throughout my whole life until, until lo and behold, I get pregnant and the name is back in fashion! I'm not looking for a name that no one else has, but I'm also not looking for my child to be the next Isla, Olivia, Ava etc. Is Ada heading in that direction? General thoughts on the name?

I absolutely adore this name and love how much meaning it has to you 😻
It is getting more popular but I actually haven’t met any

Signifyingnothing · 28/01/2020 19:39

My eldest is Ada and is about to turn 12. I love it and still haven't met any others.

Mimilamore · 28/01/2020 19:41

Absolutely 😍

17caterpillars1mouse · 28/01/2020 21:11

Over the past 2 years I have known 6 baby girls be called Ada, which seems a lot really in my smallish circle

@17caterpillars1mouse 😞

It’s definitely getting more popular, I was noticed several Adas on a recent birth announcement thread on another site.

Sparklehead · 29/01/2020 07:41

I have an Ada and know of 2 others. I love the name (obviously!) and I don’t think it will ever become overly popular. Ava is far more popular and the only slightly annoying thing about the name is my DD is often mistakenly called Ava.

DearHappy · 29/01/2020 07:43

Not keen at all but I don’t like any of the granny chic names eg Violet, Ivy, Mabel, Elsie. I have heard of a couple recently so it might be replacing Ava which I prefer.

emmathedilemma · 29/01/2020 07:45

I love it, especially your connection with it. I only know one Ada and she must be about 10 by now.

I've seen it crop up on several 20 weeks scans on Facebook now. It's really lovely. But I would say it's getting popular.

Narcheska · 29/01/2020 10:02

Not a popular name where I am. Not sure I've seen an Ada in any of my baby or toddler groups / amongst my mum groups.

Definitely none in my 7 yr olds year at school!

I think if you love it and it's a connection to your grandma use it. Ava, Eva and ivy are far common / popular I think

Icehotel · 29/01/2020 10:58

Sorry I hate this name. It's so boring and ugly and frumpy.
Nothing strong or pretty or attractive about it.
It's awful

Whatsyourflava · 29/01/2020 11:29

I love Ava

If not how about Aurelia? I’m trying to think of names that can have Ava as a nickname 🤔

theruffles · 29/01/2020 11:37

I've heard it's getting more popular but I don't know any kids called this myself. It might be growing in popularity because of Peaky Blinders. If you like it and it holds so much meaning to you, you should just use it. I wouldn't worry about others being named it or that it might be popular.

How about Ida for a variation? Less common but very similar.

june2007 · 29/01/2020 11:52

I have an ancesster. (great or great, great Aunt) with that name. I tend to think of it as an old persons name but if you like it go for it. Prefer it to Ava to many Ava,s , Eva, Eve, Evie,s.

NoSauce · 29/01/2020 12:21

Got to be one of the ugliest names going.

Whatsyourflava · 29/01/2020 12:34
  • sorry I meant I love Ada and am trying to think of names that could have Ada as a nickname
Urkiddingright · 29/01/2020 12:39

I’ve never met one personally and I love it.

bluemoon2468 · 29/01/2020 16:16

@Icehotel @NoSauce charming 😆

My 18 month old is called Ada and obviously I love it.

It is gaining in popularity and I do know 2 other Ada's - both of whom are older than my Ada. I don't know any other babies born around the same time being called Ada (maybe because it's boring and frumpy and there's nothing pretty about it Smile).

If you love it then go for it. I haven't regretted our choice for a second and get lots of positive comments on her name.

bridgetreilly · 29/01/2020 17:50

I think it's great! It is more popular than 10 years ago, but it's still really not that common. And since you have a family reason, you should definitely use it.

MinkowskisButterfly · 29/01/2020 17:58

Beautiful name.

MinkowskisButterfly · 29/01/2020 18:00

Should say I don't know any Adas. My youngest is 5 and there are a lot of 'old lady' names (I don't mean that in a horrible way, I have one with an old lady name) but now Adas.

xsamix86 · 29/01/2020 18:56

I fell in love with the name Ada a few years ago. So much so that my 15 week old DD is now called Ada and we didn't even consider any other name if we had a girl. It suits her perfectly, and hopefully with its growing popularity she will be able to find items with her name on in the future 😂
