I've been told name choices are unkind to DD on the way

We are expecting a sister for our DD Annie Coco.
We've had a little opposition to our favourite names for this one, but then none of my close relatives liked DD's name either but it gets a lot of compliments now and suits her down to the ground.

Would love thoughts on our current shortlist...

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?)
Clementine
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this)
Clover
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie)
Indigo (we love the nn Indie)
Mollie
Maggie

And agree Dolly dear god

MimiLaRue · 25/01/2020 10:01

I'm sorry but Tilly Tiger sounds like a cartoon character. Please dont give her a name that cant be taken seriously as an adult. Cutesy names are cute when young but as a young woman trying to push the limits of the glass ceiling, it just sounds ridiculous.

The others are fine but FGS please dont give her a name that will infantilise her forever

Strongmummy · 25/01/2020 10:02

Op - the names are all fantastically silly and twee. I dislike all of them, however none are offensive. But, it’s really not up to a group of randoms on the internet to pick the name of your child. It’s personal to you so go for it

gnushoes · 25/01/2020 10:05

What's wrong with June rather than Juniper? Still lovely. Don't get the hate around names that sound like they might be boys'. Please don't do the Tiger one.

SquigglePigs · 25/01/2020 10:11

I don't like Clementine (or Clem/Clemmie) and I don't think it goes with your first DD's name but the others are lovely. Ultimately though as long as you and your DH like it then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Cookit · 25/01/2020 10:13

No one knows middle names and you can just never use it at all if you want so as silly as Tiger might be, does it really matter? I don’t see a 45 year old accountant being embarrassed about being Tilly Tiger because they’d simply be Ottilie and the Tiger bit would be long forgotten.

Sunny I don’t like at all but the rest are quite nice.

Cookit · 25/01/2020 10:14

Also, Clemmie (Clementine) Churchill - so it’s definitely a name that doesn’t sound ridiculous later on.

ClappyFlappy · 25/01/2020 10:15

Tiger is a bit odd but it’s only a middle name so. O big deal. The others are largely not my taste but are not unkind, they are OK.

elenacampana · 25/01/2020 10:16

All trying too hard in my opinion.

IndieTara · 25/01/2020 10:47

Indie is a great name Wink

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 25/01/2020 10:49

I want to change my name to tillie tiger now!
Ds has 3 girls in his school year with tiger as a middle name
This is your child.
If you (her parents) like the name and think it is suitable for her, for life, then that's all that counts.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 25/01/2020 11:29

Have to say I read your list to ds(17) last night.. And he was a hard no on Clementine / Clemmie as it would be a magnet for bullies (I didn’t think it was that bad, but obviously he’s spent more time in a high school recently than I have).

Lordfrontpaw · 25/01/2020 11:42

What about Odette or Odile (spot the ballet fan)

MsTSwift · 25/01/2020 11:42

Christ what sort of school is your son at?! My dds secondary all sorts of names no one bullied about them. One poor girl is actually called Chardonnay and no one bats an eyelid

Lordfrontpaw · 25/01/2020 11:48

I got crap at school for my name. In a rather MC area at a ‘good’ school. Kids can be horrible.

MitziK · 25/01/2020 11:51

That's a thought. Do you like the name Tina? It's very likely nickname for Clementine.

Especially as there's going to be so many in school - you're unlikely to have dibs on Clemmie with it being so common, somebody will inevitably be the 'No child of mine is going to have their name shortened', so what you are left with is four girls in the same year

Clementine, Clemmie, Lemmy and Tina.

And this is before somebody who wanted a Clementine ends up with a boy Clement. Or you have families with the surname Clements.

KnobJockey · 25/01/2020 11:55

I have an Indie, that's her full first name (no shortening). She was born in September, and we have had nothing but positive reactions about her name.

Astronica · 25/01/2020 12:15

I don't think any of the names on your list are cruel, though I do dislike 2 of them, just not my taste - Ottilie (I just hear otter and utterly) and Sunny (whereas Sunday or Summer nn Sunny I would like).
Clementine, Juniper, Clover, Indigo, Mollie and Maggie are all fine names. With sister Annie I think all these would sound good - Clover maybe my favourite next to sister name. Otherwise my favourites are Clementine, Indigo and Maggie.
Lots of delightful pairings are possible with your names:
Clementine Maggie, Juniper Mollie, Clover Sunny/Maggie/Mollie, Indigo Mollie, Mollie Clementine/Juniper, Maggie Juniper/Clover.

userabcname · 25/01/2020 12:19

I like Clementine and Juniper best.

IckleBear · 25/01/2020 12:22

I love Juniper! I would choose
Juniper Cleo...

itsgettingweird · 25/01/2020 12:28

Annie is a lovely name. Very timeless imo.

I think Ottilie (Tilly) is also a timeless style name and goes well.
Also like Mollie. (Again quite timeless)

Not sure about Sunny or Maggie personally but perfectly nice names.

Indigo and Juniper are fine but agree Indie and Junie are better.

Annie Coco and Tilly Tiger are lovely.

Chocmallows · 25/01/2020 12:36

My younger DSis has an unusual name (like Indigo) and I have a popular name (like Sarah). Growing up she was teased about it, but I was a bit jealous of her having it too.

As you have an Annie, I would tend to go towards Maggie rather than Ottilie.

Calendars · 25/01/2020 12:58

I really like Mollie Clementine.

Bluntness100 · 25/01/2020 13:03

I think they are all fine other that sunny, clover and juniper.

Sunny, because I immediate think of the religion, clover because I think of the butter and because it's a very common name for cows and not really people and she'lll have the piss taken, and juniper, because it's just not very nice.

AwesomeSauce4 · 25/01/2020 13:22

Why do you even give a shit what other people think? If I'd told at least two of my children's names to people before they were born then they would have had something to say ... But we didn't care. Because they are our children.

You can still be a lawyer/doctor/politician with any name. Having a specific name doesn't make you dumb! I honestly hate the opinions of other people when it comes to choosing a child's name.

For what it's worth, I like all the names, Clementine being my favorite (I LOVE Eternal sunshine of the Spotless Mind). And, for every person that thinks Clover is a cows name blah blah blah, there will be a thousand other people that love it. Stop giving people a choice on whether to love or hate the names that you choose for you own child.
