I've been told name choices are unkind to DD on the way

We are expecting a sister for our DD Annie Coco.
We've had a little opposition to our favourite names for this one, but then none of my close relatives liked DD's name either but it gets a lot of compliments now and suits her down to the ground.

Would love thoughts on our current shortlist...

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?)
Clementine
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this)
Clover
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie)
Indigo (we love the nn Indie)
Mollie
Maggie

What on Earth is "juniper arse"?

Ginfordinner · 26/01/2020 09:13

That's a new one on me as well SoupDragon

All lovely names except Clementine, Sunny, Clover and Juniper. Thry sound like pets names. Sunny Clementine sounds like a brand of orange juice and Clover is abeand of margarine and for some reason makes me picture a cow in a field. The other names are all pretty though,OP.

I also think it's odd to plan nn's. Children usually naturally assume a nn when they're born bit not pre birth. It happens naturally, not a forced, preplanned thing.

Soup "Did you nip her arse?"

Bit of a reach.

MikeUniformMike · 26/01/2020 15:01

Bbq1, I think you can plan what shortened or lengthened form of the name to use - Kate, Annie, Liz or something.
At school, nicknames were usually the first few letters with a s or z (Daz, Kaz, Gaz, Emms etc) on the end but there were some unusual ones too.

Crystal87 · 26/01/2020 15:41

I'm not a huge fan of any of them, sorry. Unless you're very middle class and all of her peers are middle class, with pretentious silly names like Indigo she's going to be teased. Ottilie Tiger is on another level. Mollie is fine.

People who say 'middle' names don't matter, and most people don't know what they are, are probably correct, but in my case both my I, my sister and my mother have only ever been known by their middle name. God knows why, although I certainly prefer my middle name to my first name, and my mum was most disgruntled when I told a very long-term family friend what her first name actually was. So, for the three of us, the middle name is/ was important.

In the UK you can call yourself whatever you want, nothing to do with your birth certificate, as long as you're not using a change of name to defraud. You don't even need to do it officially by deedpoll. So whatever name a child is given they're not stuck with it. However, people who give their child a [daft] name, including those names that are quite common but spelt differently to the norm, are all about themselves rather than caring about what it may mean to the child.

But, I reiterate, it's down to the parents what they call their own child, and the child can easily lose that name in the future and call themselves something else. So I think people should just go with the name that grabs them.

MikeUniformMike · 26/01/2020 19:32

Middle names matter if the child dislikes it, or if the first name and surname combination is very common.

You can call yourself what you like as pp said. Your official documents will remain the same unless you legally change your name.

Many actors and authors use a stage or pen name but have their passport and bank details in their 'own' name.

Ottilie Tiger is lovely, also like Ottilie Clover and would use Tilly Moo as a cute pet name (cow reference can work to your advantage there!), really like all the names on your list other than Maggie

Urkiddingright · 02/02/2020 18:30

Clementine and Ottilie are beautiful names. I wouldn’t use Tiger as a middle name though...

lljkk · 02/02/2020 19:49

Tiger is one I like much better than almost all the others.
But that's not saying I like Tiger a lot...
I think you only wanted endorsements, OP.
fwiw, I think it's insanity to ask for name responses online.
If you really wanted sincere responses, then mine is that they all make me cringe.
Doesn't matter, though. You live with the consequences. Not us.

Mollie goes well with Annie
